Art imitates life in the sitcom's fifth season as marriage equality comes to California, setting the stage for Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) to finally tie the knot. Season 4 brought some surprising changes to the Biggs' household as Molly (Melissa McCarthy) made a monumental decision regarding her teaching career and entertained the notion of becoming a writer. Later in the season, Small turns up again when Carl and Mike (Billy Gardell) book her for driving under the influence. As for Mike, he too had some momentous incidents in his life as he took a bullet during a robbery, which led him to contemplate his mortality and choice of profession. Later, he, Carl and Samuel (Nyambi Nyambi) undertake a road trip to Memphis, where they hope to meet Carl's long-estranged mother. In the Season 4 finale, Molly is ecstatic to be accepted into a prestigious writer's workshop, but Mike isn't thrilled about having his wife gone for eight weeks in the summer.
