A "professional student" lands a truly remarkable job in this witty made-for-TV fantasy adventure. Flynn Carsen (Noah Wyle) is a 30-year-old graduate student who has managed to collect a whopping 22 university degrees; despite his brilliance, shy Flynn seems to have a hard time with the real world, and his mentor at school finally has him expelled so he can start putting his knowledge to work. Things are not much better for him at home, where his mother, Margie (Olympia Dukakis), wants him to meet a nice girl and settle down on his own. Needing a job, Flynn finds an unexpected opening with the New York Metropolitan Library, where Judson (Bob Newhart) and Charlene (Jane Curtin) hire him to look after a special collection. And a very special collection it is -- unknown to the world, the library has been caring for the world's most precious relics, including the Holy Grail, Pandora's Box, the Golden Fleece, the Sword of Excalibur and the Mona Lisa (the real one...turns out the Louvre only has a copy). It isn't long before Flynn learns how dangerous his job can be when he's approached by Lana (Kelly Hu) and Rhodes (David Dayan Fisher), members of a secret underground mob known as the Serpent Brotherhood who happen to know that Flynn is the new guardian of the Spear of Destiny -- and will stop at nothing to take it from him.

Lee Sholem's The Redhead From Wyoming (1953) is a B-movie in A-movie garb, shot in Technicolor and co-starring Maureen O'Hara (who, if she hadn't been born, would have had to have been invented by the owners of Technicolor as a "canvas" for their product). It's just good enough, however, to justify a DVD release, so well preserved and transferred that it's worth a look just to see the kind of diverting if totally unambitious work that Hollywood (and Universal Studios) put out when they weren't generating genre classics like Winchester '73, High Noon, The Gunfighter, Arrowhead etc. O'Hara plays the kind of flirty, playful shrew that she specialized in during this period, with perhaps the prettiest costumes with which she was ever graced. Also visible in the cast are a young Dennis Weaver and Jeanne Cooper, and Stacy Harris, an actor familiar to longtime viewers of Dragnet -- it is funny seeing Harris, who made most of his career playing criminals and smarmy attorneys, in western attire. The source print is gorgeous, with occasional oversaturation of the fleshtones but otherwise one of the prettiest looking pictures one is likely to see in a western of this vintage. The real "star" is the Technicolor image and the costumes worn by O'Hara (and the figure she boasts), which either compliment or contrast beautifully with her red hair. The 81-minute movie has been given 20 chapter markers, which is handy though hardly essential in a picture with a plot as slight as this. the only really notable plot development is a cattle stampede that is nicely photographed but otherwise unexceptional as such scene go and not exciting in the least. The original trailer is included as a bonus feature, looking about as good as the film itself. The disc opens automatically on a simple four-selection menu that goes to a second layer for subtitle selection (English, French, Spanish).

My hubby and I ordered this movie to add to our Maureen O'Hara collection (she is my favorite actress). We had never seen this one before, and honestly my husband agreed to watch it one evening to appease me. We both ended up LOVING the movie and the plot! He now has new respect for my endeavor to get more Maureen O'Hara movies.he!he! :)

Andrew V. McLaglen's The Rare Breed (1966) is an offbeat, genial western from a period in which the genre found itself increasingly relying on violence to reach audiences. There is some violence here -- though mostly the threat of it -- but primarily this movie walks a fine line between light-hearted western comedy and a serious (if unconventional) subject, the breeding of cattle -- just so its intentions are clear, at about six minutes in, there is a brawl that is obviously meant to recall the slag-pit fight sequence in McLaglen's 1963 western comedy McLintock!. The movie has been letterboxed to its full 2.35-to-1 Panavision aspect ratio, with a great deal of depth and richness to the color. The landscapes are very pretty, and some of interior scenes do work better with the widescreen image, but the truth is that this movie should never have been shot in Panavision -- it wasn't essential to the presentation of the subject. Additionally, the opening up of the Panavision frame only reminds us of the obvious studio process shots used in certain scenes. Still, we're stuck with the framing, and the color and detail here is superior to anything seen of The Rare Breed in broadcast or cable presentations of the film. The 20 chapters are more than adequate, and the DVD also comes with the original trailer, which is full-frame and a lot darker in color tone. The trailer, incidentally, may also have marked a high-point in the feature film career of Don Galloway, who was to find success on television three years later as one of the detectives working for Raymond Burr on Ironside. The movie comes with French, Spanish, and English subtitle and caption selections, accessible through a menu that opens automatically on start-up.

I've been looking for years to get a Maureen O'Hara box collection, but haven't had much luck in finding one. So, I bit the bullet and found some of my favs to order. This is a great addition to my collection! They just don't make movies like this anymore. Great movie!
