David Michôd's brilliant post-apocalyptic drama The Rover is easily one of the best films of 2014, an uncompromising tale of humanity at its bleakest. Nobody viewed this film in the theater which is essentially crimes against cinema - now's the chance to see a young, major filmmaker doing serious, unrestrained, auteur-inspired work. More extreme love for A24

Cemented (no pun intended...see the film...) by a spellbinding, tour de force performance from Actor of the Moment Tom Hardy, Steven Knight's brilliant existential drama Locke is nerve-rackingly intense, fully absorbing and completely unpredictable, due in no small part to the narrative conceit of the entire film taking place from the interior of a car. Confined to the driver's seat of his BMW SUV, Hardy gives an all-stops-out performance – this guy is the real deal, seemingly capable of any role that’s asked of him, always able to elicit sympathy no matter how ragged the character, going from subtle to big at the drop of a hat. The dreamy, artsy cinematography by Haris Zambarloukos leaps off the screen in the Blu-ray format; it’s London-street-lamp-at-night-gorgeous, with reflections and window patters dotting the 2.35:1 widescreen space. Because the story is delivered via a series of desperate phone calls that Hardy is having with a variety of people, there’s always the question of how realistic can this scenario play out. But because Knight is so strong with his words and so precise with his visuals, the film becomes more than just a trick-stunt – it’s one of the best movies of the year.

The most purely entertaining film of 2014. All smiles. Lots of genuine heart. Great performances. Scrumptious food photography. The rare sentimental flick that really works for me. Forever Jon Favreau POWER. Bobby Cannavale is a riot, same with John Leguizamo. RDJ has a killer cameo, truly one of the funniest bits of the year. This movie also somehow makes Sofia Veraga tolerable! Seriously though...a cozy little gem of a movie that reminds you of the simpler times.

Oliver Stone’s Any Given Sunday is now 15 years old and this newly released Special Edition Blu-ray just bleeds off the screen. Featuring a supremely aggressive audio/visual package, this is totally-in-your-face filmmaking at all times. Hurtling, stylized, frenzied cinematography from Salvatore Totino that shakes the senses. The hyperactive yet still lucid editing is in perfect tandem with the over the top subject material and everything is played at just the right tone and pitch. The eclectic musical score compliments every wild and crazy scene. Al Pacino is at his Shouting-Mad best here, and he gets some seriously good dialogue from John Logan and Stone; his “inches” locker room speech is one for the ages. Stone brought major directorial intensity to each and every scene in this scathing indictment of professional football; in retrospect this film feels very ahead of its time. The cold, cynical message this film purveys is still relevant and topical. The absurdly deep cast all deliver deeply committed performances; standouts are an icy Cameron Diaz, a perfectly weathered Dennis Quaid, sleazy James Woods pushing pain killers on the players, and of course, the flashy and confident work of then-acting-newcomer Jamie Foxx, who holds his own with all of the veteran actors, and does a lot on his own with his arrogant, show-boating character. The sequence where he has dinner with Pacino and the chariot race from Ben-Hur is playing in the background is still one of my favorite scenes in any film. And let’s not forget about the in-credits stinger – so nasty! Great football action, sharp satire, fantastic visuals, and dynamite sound design help make this one of the best sports movies of all time.

This is the best Marvel effort yet, shot with a love for 70's paranoid thrillers and also owing lots to recent martial-arts masterpiece The Raid with the close-quarters fighting. Chris Evans is the perfect Captain America and the presence of Robert Redford as the heavy bolsters the entire production. Terrific action sequences in service of a solid story.

This is the most underrated Scorsese movie ever, with an utterly brilliant performance from Robert DeNiro, with Jerry Lewis his very equal in every scene. Scathingly funny, refreshingly nasty, and very prophetic, this is one of those movies that you have to see a few times in order to truly love all that it contains.

Ala American Pie but funnier and more outrageous, this is easily the funniest movie of the last few years, up there with This is the End in the pure-laughs department. Aubrey Plaza is terrific and Bill Hader steals every scene. Hilarious, heartfelt, and very, very raunchy.
