I have bought 2 of these for my nephews....the 1st one I purchased I had to download it. Then he dropped it. I returned it with the the geek squad protection. The 2nd one was pre-loaded so you may need to open it and set it up to see before
shipping it off.

what is the difference between a regular washer and a high efficiency washer

The best answer I can give is, this machine uses less energy also it only uses enough water for the amount of clothes in the tub. Saves on water and electric. I hope this helps.

this washer does not have a detergent dispenser. will I have a problem with my clothes sitting directly on the detergent (and potentially staining the clothes) while the tub fills with water?

We haven't had a problem with detergent. We use liquid and powder also the little detergent tabs. It has a bleach dispenser on it and a liquid fabric softener in the middle. The best feature to us is this machine only uses enough water for the amount of clothes, that you put in the tub.
