Insignia surge protector

Works fine for my purposes, decent surge protection but I wouldn't count on it for a direct lightning strike. Of course, nothing else would help either, but this surge protector offers a decent level of protection at a pretty cheap price. It's pretty well made, considering the price. The plugs don't swivel, which I didn't need, but I really do appreciate the fact that they left plenty of spacing for heavy duty AC plugs. Most surge suppressors have the plugs so close together you can only use every other one, so this one works better than most. There are better ones out there for a lot more money, but for the average user this is all they'll ever need.

Comcast Gateway
on October 15, 2016

I wanted to replace my Comcast gateway (modem/router) with my own, both to save the rental fee and to provide a greater level of password security. The Motorola MG7310 is essentially a drop-in replacement, so setup was simple and took very little time. I was surprised to find that the Motorola gateway outperformed the Comcast-provided gateway by a significant margin. Download speeds at my location with Blast routinely exceed 40 mbps regardless of the speed test service that I utilize. Since I've installed this gateway (about 3 months ago) I've had zero outages and reset the gateway once; when the power went out. I have four wired components connected, plus four computers and two printers connected through the wifi. The range of the wifi easily reaches all points in our 2-story house, and the speed tests were done through the wifi, not a direct connection. I can't really fault this gateway on anything--it provides security, dependability, and outstanding performance for the whole family at a really great price, so I can recommend this product to anyone with similar needs.

Does this Motorola modem/ router have built in security?

Yes it does, every format, and you can set your own device names and your own passwords for both the device and for the wifi. Just write them down somewhere so you don't forget them, otherwise you'll have to reset the gateway to the default values and go through your setup all over again. The default values are printed on the sticker on the bottom. Access is through DNS 192.168.0.1 with the default values "admin" and "motorola". Change both of these and the default values for the wifi, as well as the values for whatever guest networks you set up. It's pretty easy.

What Cable Type does this cable modem use? F-Type or RG6 or RG-6U?

RG6 is the cable type used by Dish/DirecTV for satellite service, a heavier guage than is required for cable TV from Comcast, TWC, etc. Both cables are terminated in an F-type connector, and this gateway has the standard F-type connection, so either wire guage will connect.

does it work with online gaming?will it slow the speed if you play online?

It will work with online gaming, depending on how much bandwidth the game requires. If it's a 2-player game that really hogs the bandwidth (a couple of the newer games) you might have an advantage with a dual band router. Look for an AC1900 or faster if you want the ultimate in game play. Use a direct connection instead of wifi if at all possible.

Will this enhance speed for my 100 Mbps time warner cable? And can I use wifi with this?

Probably not, but that depends on a lot of things. This gateway will download or stream a high definition movie without stuttering, provided you're not using the internet for a bunch of other stuff at the same time. Your 100 mbps service from TWC might be delivering (to your home) less than 20 mbps, which is about what you need to stream a hi-def movie without buffering. You should check your actual download speeds online to see what TWC is providing you in real use. There are a whole bunch of sites that allow you to speed test your service. Just Google "speed test" and try them out--your speeds will vary depending on how rigorous the test is. www/dslreports.com/speedtest is perhaps the most accurate, and it allows you to test for every type of service--for example, "cable".

Is this is a modem and router for wi fi?

It includes b,g, and N300 router with the modem in the same box; ie: a gateway. Gives you internet service in your home at pretty good speeds, usually sufficient for most users, unless you're into heavy duty gaming. Also includes four connections to hook your devices up with CAT5 wire, which is a little faster than wifi.

What wi-fi formats does this modem support (a,b,g,n)?

All of the above, with N being the fastest, of course. It does not include the newer AC dual band router format, which is faster yet.

What kind of range (sq. ft. Coverage) can I expect from this unit?

That depends on a lot of variables. The obstructions, like walls that you're going through, will affect the range. Other wifi devices in close proximity will also affect the range, and that includes your neighbors wifi. I have a 2 story house with a full attic and full basement, and there's no place in the house that the wifi doesn't reach. The gateway is pretty centally located and I'm not using any beam forming. I have other devices that are close to the gateway but they're all connected with CAT5 cable so I'm not crowding the wifi. I don't have any neighbors houses right on top of me, although I can see their LAN's on my computer. If you have a problem setup, with lots of walls between the router and your device, you can always add an inexpensive range extender, but I've not found that to be necessary in my environment.
