Number5's Reviews

This special edition re-release of Gremlins is a vast improvement over the original disc. To begin with, the image, which is framed at the original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, shows clear signs of the new digital transfer. Colors are sharp and vibrant (though maybe a little over saturated at times) with blacks that are solid. Overall the immediate impression of the picture is better than would be expected. The sound, which uses the same 5.1 English track from the original release, is certainly good, but never takes advantage of the entire sound field. It's generally centered up front, but is distortion free and produces clear audio. The main difference between releases is obviously the supplemental features. Whereas the first disc was basically movie only, this one has a number of nice features. At the top of the list would have to be two new commentary tracks. The first is enthusiastic and informational with director Joe Dante and actors Zach Galligan, Howie Mandel, and the less heard Phoebe Cates and Dick Miller. The second is a little more technical, but nevertheless entertaining with Dante again, producer Michael Finnell, and special effects artist Chris Walas. The rest of the extras, while good, are less spectacular. Along with ten minutes of deleted scenes with optional commentary is a six-minute featurette with behind-the-scenes shots and interviews, a photo/storyboard gallery, and cast and crew biographies. Rounding this nice package out are three trailers, two for this film and one for the sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

This a good movie, but for those that have never seen it, I would not recommend it for kids. It does have violence in it. Not as much as most of today's movies, but enough.

One of the things I love about this movie is it shows that a person with a lower IQ can have a very extraordinary life. Forest went through his life being very honest about how his life was as he retold it to strangers while waiting for a bus. There was one woman for him, he loved her his whole life and finally got her in the end.

Warner Bros' DVD release of Private Benjamin is a big disappointment for two obvious reasons. First of all, the film can only be viewed in full-screen, pan-and-scan format. Secondly, the film's soundtrack only comes in Dolby Stereo 2.0. The DVD contains English and French soundtracks, and can be viewed with English, French, or Spanish subtitles. It also has colorful interactive menus and good bios/filmographies on its nine main stars, including Goldie Hawn, Eileen Brennan, and Armand Assante, as well as director Howard Zieff, musician Bill Conti, and writers/producers Nancy Meyers, Charles Shyer, and Harvey Miller. The film also comes with a theatrical trailer and recommendations (or advertisements) for nine other titles. One wishes that the attention given to advertising the other titles would have been focused on better production notes, a better soundtrack, or, especially, presenting this classic film in widescreen.

I first saw this movie when I was a teenager and loved it. It has been hard to find on a dvd at a reasonable price. If you like Goldie Hawn you will like this movie.

Warner Bros.' DVD edition of Clint Eastwood's high-flying space adventure is as good as they come. The picture is an excellent 2.35:1 widescreen transfer. Most impressive are the opening scenes, shot in a sumptuous black-and white, and the space scenes. As is often the case with films of this kind, the sound design is top-flight, bringing booming rockets and sound barrier-shattering jets to life in Dolby Digital 5.1. There is also a nice selection of extras to be found. There is a behind-the-scenes documentary that serves largely to promote the film, but still provides a great look at the creative process. Also included are a pair of featurettes that look at the making of the special effects and the editing of the film. Both offer some tidbits of information that one might pick up otherwise (for instance, in one scene where Eastwood is walking in space, everything but his face was created by a computer). Lastly, there is the full version of a clip from The Tonight Show that was shown in the movie, featuring the film's stars as their characters banter with host Jay Leno. It's a great bit of improv and fun to watch. The clip is interspersed with interviews with Leno about how he was tapped for the project. This is a solid DVD with plenty to recommend it. The only complaint would be the glaring absence of a commentary track from Eastwood and/or his co-stars. Watching them work together on film makes one wonder what they would have had to say.

This is an excellent movie a little thriller and a little comedy. There is not a lot of violence, but enough action to keep it interesting. Space cadets of all ages should like this film.

I have absolutely loved these movies every since I first saw them, they make Johnny very lovable after he gets his personality after his accident. He continues to be even better in the second movie which was impossible to find without it being a combo. My grandkids loved these movies. If you want a kid friendly movie that's a PG these are the ones.
