Excellent Laptop and price

Bought on sale during back to school which made it a great value. Pros: Excellent CPU, GPU and screen size. Great ventilation for airflow.
Cons: a little heavy, probably because of gpu size/build. Wish ram was 16gb instead of 12gb. also there is a mistake in the listing, this is not a 10gb usb 3.1 as according to HP spec sheet the usb 3.1's are gen 1 which makes the transfer rate 5gb which was somewhat a bummer for me because I wanted to utilize external ssd's at full speed as the unit will be used for video editing..
Overall I recommend this pc for performance and value mainly because of the processor and gpu. Hence I didn't mention no ssd under cons as I didn't expect one in this price range and plan to upgrade to my choice of ssd which you should be able to do too. Ram should be sufficient for most applications but plan to upgrade to 32gb in the future. I still gave it 5 stars for value since it has the rx580 at 8gb. This would have been the perfect laptop if the usb 3.1's are gen 2 and it had 16gb ram instead of 12gb. Remember to create a recovery usb drive in windows as HP doesn't ship laptops with a recovery option.

Do you need to remove the original HDD to install an SSD drive or can you add an extra SSD drive and keep the original HDD drive installed ?

You can add extra ssd, it allows you to add an m.2 which you can put in it an evo 960 for fast speeds.

The laptop shows a Thunderbolt 3 symbol on its chassis and the Best Buy site indicates that it has Thunderbolt, but the HP specifications state its is a Type C 3.1 at 5Gb/s. Can someone confirm it is a thunderbolt 3?

I would go with the HP's spec sheet, this is a gen 1 and not 2, meaning max speed 5gb. The Best Buy listing has an error claiming the USB 3.1 is 10gb speed which make it gen 2, that also according to the spec sheet is gen 1 and 5gb max speed. I only found this out after buying the laptop but still think it is a great value especially if you buy it now on sale because it has the rx580 at 8gb which is slightly better the the gtx 1060.

Very little, a solution could be an external keyboard. This model is on display at most stores if you want to check it out.

Does this laptop have an m.2 slot? How does the rx 580 compare to the 1060 found in other laptops? Can you output 144hz throught the mini display port?

Yes this laptop has m.2 so you can install a samsung evo 960 or similar. According to benchmarks RX580 is a better card, it sits between the 1060 and 1070.

is the HDMI port 2.0 or 1.4? what about the DP? 1.2 or 1.3?

Checked the spec sheet from HP (link below) and it doesn't mention beyond 1 HDMI, I would think it's 2.0 because it has the RX580 but that is not definitive. I do know according to the spec sheet that the usb 3.1's are 5gb as they are gen 1 and not 10gb as listed. I bought this laptop and very happy with it so far, I just need to upgrade os drive to ssd, but a great value if you buy it on sale now.
