Use only reg black and photo black

Can I leave empty color cartridges in place and just replace photo blk and high yield blk cartridges if I only want to print in blk and white?

I do all the time- the ink "bay" just can't be empty but if you always set your printing jobs to use black only, (or "high quality" for two-sided printing) then you do not need the color cartridges to be full. I have been operating the same way for years (I just print text documents so color is unnecessary).
