I give this 3 stars because I am not sure what the purpose of this release was. This is a re-issue of 2000's CD "Hall of Fame" with Ray Thomas' great song "Legend of a Mind" cut out. The picture inside the booklet is of an empty hall with a slide showing just Justin Hayward, John Lodge, and Graeme Edge. Ray retired in 2003 but was very much active in the original concert, which also aired on PBS and is available on DVD.
The Moodies most recent release at the time was 1999's "Strange Times," and 3 selections from that are included: "English Sunset," "Haunted," and "Words You Say". "English Sunset" really benefits from the concert treatment, acquiring a punch lacking on the original track. John's "Words You Say" is disappointing in that it just stops rather than ends. Ray's flute is great on this track, though. The rest of the songs have all been released in live versions before, most notably 1992's terrific "Live at Red Rocks," where there are better versions. You would think that for this edition they would have released songs from the concert that were not on the "Hall of Fame" CD.
If you have "Hall of Fame," there is no reason to buy this unless you are an inveterate collector like me. Actually, there is no real reason to buy this at all. Just get "Hall of Fame."
My Best Buy number: 1006167049
What's great about it: Good music, good performances, well recorded
What's not so great: Edited from the original version
The old DVD of this title was one of the very worst for picture quality. Anyone who ever saw it knows that it was badly in need of a new transfer. Well, it got one . . . and the difference is remarkable. The new blu-ray is very accurate to the way the film originally looked. It's still a dark film with a lot of drab colors, but the image is clear. Toss your old DVD immediately -- this is a well made, suspenseful and smart film . . . and it has never looked better!
I'm not a big comedy fan, but this is one that I really enjoy. Silly, slap-stick comedy with actual characters and a heart. We look forward to watching this every Thanksgiving. The picture quality is a big upgrade from the DVD -- although if you dislike DNR, you may be displeased. A very smooth looking picture. WARNING: The movie has one big drawback for family viewing: language. When the kids were young we always had to skip the car rental scene because of it's constant use of the the "f-word". It's actually done in a funny manner, but it's obviously not for young ears. Also, John Candy has several crude lines throughout. With a little less language this would be a great family comedy!
What's great about it: A very funny comedy
What's not so great: The rough language is the only drawback.
Saw this on Netflix and enjoyed it very much. Best Buy for a very good price so I picked it up, and I was glad I did.. The blu-ray is a big upgrade over the streaming video! It looks and sounds great. Fun movie -- creepy, campy fun. Not any gore, just a good old-fashioned haunted house/monster movie. Well acted and well made. Miles ahead of the of TV movie for everything except nostalgia. Go get it!
