i'm usually a "gotta be there" person, but after the vertigo i suffered during the 'vertigo' tour, i opted out. but, man, what a show?! u2 has always been the band to push the bar, and they've done it again!
the film shots of the stage and the band are amazing - and steady, not like someone ran around with his handycam. the colors are brilliant and vibrant, the shots raw without being grainy, and the intimacy is palpable - even in a venue as large as the rose bowl. the fact remains that u2 is a band that easily and instantly forms a bond with its audience; they are entertainment with a cause.
this concert brought into focus the leader of burma, who since coming to power in 1991 has been under house arrest for most of that time. the moments they spent with the issue made the evening more poignant rather than detracting from the overall concert experience.
as usual, their stagecraft was amazing! the lighting was top notch as well, allowing for shadows to blend with intense color shots, and softened tones to add to the music. the sound levels remained constant, no wavering between highs and lows, just good strong music all the way through.
there is a moment where the camera angle from the floating hands-free mike made me wince - bono swung it out over the audience and my stomach just lurched. not something you would get to experience outside the video, huh?
in all, i thought it was one of the best made concert productions i've seen.
What's great about it: music, music, music
I would recommend this to a friend!
