The nicest mess imaginable

Laurel and Hardy, probably the greatest comedy team of all time, are treated royally by this compilation of all the "talkie" short subjects and feature films they made at the Hall Roach studios, which encompasses most of their best work. There are expert commentary tracks on some of the offerings. Others feature more than one U.S. version of a picture. And still others include expanded foreign language versions. The price obviously means this isn't an "impulse buy" for 99% of the population. But given that it is a 10 disc set, with almost every disc being over three hours, it's actually a bargain. So consider visiting the chaotic, hilarious world of L&H, where Murphy's law is always in effect. I think you'll be glad you did.
What's great about it: Pretty much everything
What's not so great: The price I guess, even though it's a great value

A grand "Aunt"
on January 18, 2012

"Kara"Hui Ying Hung sparkles like a diamond here. Only in her teens and just three weeks removed from an appendicitus operation, she is flawless in her acting and fighting. She won the Hong Kong equivalent of Best Actress Oscar for this role.
Despite its title, "My Young Auntie" is a martial arts masterpiece. The first three quarters of the movie deals with the "Westernization" of China and there's a lot of comedy. Kung Fu is worked in but in unusual contexts, such as at a costume ball. And in a wonderful scene where Hui Ying Hung, teetering on unfamiliar high heels and wearing a slit to the hips dress, fights off lecherous punks while vainly trying not to show her legs.
Then in the final half hour director/choreographer Lau Kar Leung clears the decks for more serious fights. And they're as good as any you'll ever see.
Extras include an interview with Hui Ying Hung and a commentary track by two martial arts film critics.
What's great about it: Hui Ying HUng and the fight choreography & execution
What's not so great: The heroine is sidelined for the climax

Deep-sea thrills abound as passengers on a luxury liner are hijacked and face off against an ill-tempered sea monster in this saltwater suspense thriller from Walt Disney Video. Presented in the original 2.35:1 widescreen theatrical aspect ratio and featuring a closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, this release also offers an additional French Dolby Digital Stereo track as well. Extra features on this bare-bones release are limited to a theatrical trailer.

This is a better than average monster movie. As in most such movies, there are things that really don't make much sense, especially near the end. But generally it moves along so fast that you don't have time to notice. The plot sort of mashes together bits of several better movies. And Treat Williams is very much "a generic hero" with a little catchphrase which quickly becomes annoying. But the special effects are very good, even years later, there are several memorable death scenes, and Famke is always nice to watch. If you have a taste for it, this is 3.5 of 5 on the sushi scale.
What's great about it: The effects and the demises
What's not so great: The leading man and the logic

Poison's better the second time around

The actors who played the Five Deadly Venoms (Except for "Snake" Wei Pai) are back, but they play new characters in an unrelated story. An alternate title the film is known by, "Crippled Avengers," is more accurate. Maimed by villains who were emotionally and in one case physically crippled themselves, four men find a kung fu master who trains them to end the villains' reign of terror.
This is one of the best of the dozen or so movies that most of the "Venoms" actors made together. Little of it is remotely believable, but that's not necessarily bad. There are many martial arts weapons used, numerous intricately choreographed fights, and even a rather touching friendship between a blind avenger and a deaf & dumb one. Note there are some bloody scenes; not for young or sensitive/impressionable viewers. Recommended to those who enjoy violent yet almost elegant action.
What's great about it: Fight choreography and execution.
What's not so great: You really have to suspend your disbelief.

Sherlock Holmes has rarely been better
on December 29, 2011

"Murder by Decree" is the second film putting Sherlock Holmes on the trail of Jack the Ripper, following the earlier "A Study in Terror." More sumptuously produced than the earlier film, "Murder" is class all the way. The acting is exceptional in all cases. While Holmes has generally been portrayed as brilliant but rather cold, Christopher Plummer makes him much more empathetic. And in a small but key role, a very young Genevieve Bujold is affecting as a girl whose tragic lot is at the core of the mystery. Sadly the dvd does not have captioning, but it does offer an excellant commentary track from the director. Possibly too slow-paced for those with a need for rapid editing cuts and action in the Robert Downey Jr. "Holmes" mode, "Murder by Decree" will be enjoyed by most others who like Holmes, mysteries, and top-notch film-making.
What's great about it: Pretty much everything
What's not so great: No captions, perhaps could have been a few minutes shorter

Your average Ninja
on April 28, 2010

When you hear the word "Ninja," you most likely think of a guy all in black sneaking into someplace to kill someone. There's some of that in this movie, but not as much as you'd expect.
That's because, as we are informed very briefly near the beginning, the ninja "disciplines of death" have now been transformed into "a martial art of enlightenment." So the ninjitsu school where the movie opens is basically just an all-purpose martial arts school - which also happens to be home to the outfit and weaponry of a legendary ninja.
Thus most of the traditional ninja action comes courtesy of the villain, who is expelled from the school for trying to kill a rival. He goes into business as an assassin for hire, but still wants the prestige attached to possessing the old ninja artifacts. His attempts to get them form the core of the movie.
"Ninja" has its strengths. But story weaknesses keep it from being more than just "okay." It tries to be a bit of a globe-trotting adventure and can't really do it on its budget. The fights are well done though not especially memorable. As a "turn off your brain" actioner it's not bad, but not really satisfying either. 2 and 1/2 nunchuks out of five.
What's great about it: The fights are good
What's not so great: Plot holes and generally weak story
