Well done

This is a great movie for old guys everywhere. Set in Detroit, Korean War Vet Walt Kowalski has watched his neighborhood deteriorate and hasn't much use for the Blacks and Asians that have moved in (he's a serious bigot). Eventually he learns that most of these people are not as worthless as he thinks and comes up with a unique solution for dealing with the ones who are.
What's great about it: Unusual plot belivable and well executed.
What's not so great: He's not very likable especially at the beginning.

Based on a popular manga series by Motomiya Hiroshi, this offbeat anime series follows the adventures of Kintaro Yajima, once the leader of a feared gang of Japanese bikers. When Kintaro saved the life of a man who owned a large construction firm, he expressed his gratitude by offering Kintaro a job. While several years of office work have smoothed out a few of Kintaro's rough edges, the same quick reflexes and thirst for action still follows him into the executive suite, leading to frequent clashes of style and approach with his co-workers. Salaryman Kintaro, Part 1 collects the first four episodes of the series.

It's about a charismatic leader of a large biker gang who saves the life of an executive of a massive construction company who offers him an office job.
BTW, There is no English dub on this. It's subtitles only.
What's great about it: It's different and very funny.
What's not so great: It's simplistic and the artwork is old school.

This release from the sci-fi Western anime series Coyote Ragtime Show includes episodes 1-12 of the show, following Franca, daughter of the legendary Pirate King Bruce, as she enlists the help of space-cowboy mercenaries to collect the inheritance left to her by her now-dead father - which just happens to be stashed in a vault in a zone that's about to explode with civil war.

If you're in the mood for something fun where you don't have to think too much, this story of inter-stellar cops and robbers will fill the bill.
What's great about it: The plot hasn't been done to death.
What's not so great: Too simplistic. A lot of shark jumping occurs.

This fun and musical release from the anime series K-On! includes episodes 5-8 of the show, following the story of a girl named Yui Hirasawa, who becomes the lead guitarist in an all girl rock band at her high school - even though she has no musical experience whatsoever.

A show to explore Japanese culture
on August 11, 2011

K-On! is about Japanese schoolgirls and their school club, The Light Music Club, which is basically a band.
The Japanese take their after-school activities seriously. Joining a school club is a serious commitment. In the first volume, the girls desperately look for a fourth member - not just because they need a lead guitar, but because they must have at least four members to keep the school from disbanding the club. In this second volume (episodes 5 through 8 out of 27, so there should be about five more volumes), they acquire a faculty adviser, hold their first performance, have a Christmas party and troll for additional members. Like so many other anime, the show explores friendships and personalities but excels at doing it with much humor.
Nothing really exciting happens. Nothing gets blown up. There are no great personal crises. Just cute, funny schoolgirls in a band.
BTW, the dubbing isn't badly done, but if you're a purist, you can also watch it in Japanese with subtitles.
What's great about it: It's funny and good escapism
What's not so great: Requires a huge tolerence for cuteness.
