A great pair of earbuds!

The JVC HA-A18T “Marshmallow” earbuds is one of JVC’s latest entrants to the otherwise crowded earbud space. That said where does it all fit in and what would be its virtues? Having used these earbuds for a week, here are my thoughts.
The HA-A18T are small earbuds which are barely noticeable when worn in your ears. Likewise, the charging case is small too. But don’t let its size fool you. The earbuds themselves have rating of 7.5 hours of battery life. And when used with the charging case, one can get a total paying time of 28 hours which is already decent capacity. The case is charged by a supplied USB-C cable and can be fully charged within two and half hours for the case and two for the earbuds themselves. A ten minute quick charge of the earbuds will also give you an hour’s worth of playing time. This is in line with premium earbuds. And quite honestly a very nifty feature should these be the only pair of earbuds or the main earbuds that you use.
The earbuds themselves have an IPX4 rating meaning they are water resistant. And in most actual use cases, an IPX4 rating is pretty much sufficient meaning you can still workout and accidentally splash water and still have your earbuds working. Personally, I really don’t see the practically having waterproof or IPX7 rated cases. (I am saying this because I have two other branded IPX7 earbuds. And while both products work underwater, I do not see a practical purpose for it.)
These earbuds also utilize BT 5.3 which in a nutshell has a better signal connection but throughput would be the more accurate description (but the ordinary person would not really about technical terms.) It has no connected app like most earbuds. But then again this is a double edged sword some would prefer an app whereas others don’t. Truthfully, I am fine without using an app since I don’t have to provide any personal info just to use these earbuds. All controls are done by the touch sensitive earbuds.
As for sound quality, the default sound signature has a good balance of bass and treble. Mids are also decent too. There are also settings to increase bass and also lessen bass through the clear mode option. To help further enhance the sound, these earbuds include memory foam ear tips aside from silicone ones. Memory foam ear tips provide a better seal than silicone ones thereby proving better noise isolation and better clarity. Truth be told, I do not see the value in active noise canceling in earbuds (having several of them too.) But your needs may differ in mine.
The only complaint that I would give for these earbuds it that call volume seems to be tiny. It is still clear but volume seems lacking. But this is no deal breaker for me since I use this for listening to music rather than making extended calls. And at this price point these earbuds are a good value since it provides a good balance between performance and price. These are a highly recommended pair of earbuds for those who want good sound quality but do not want to break the bank.

A decent entry level Chromebook

This Acer Chromebook is the latest line of Acer’s highly popular Spin 311 series. Like its previous predecessors, it is a touch screen Chromebook and is capable flip at 360 degrees making it a tablet albeit thick. And like most Chromebook nowadays, the Spin 311 also supports Android apps. (But one thing to note though is that for those who prefer to use Microsoft/Office 365, the Android are no longer available in the Google app store and you have to use the web version.)
This latest iteration of the Spin 311 series still sports the 11 inch screen which IMO is still ideal for general use overall. This model is is a bit thinner than previous models and is quite welcome. But one thing to note though is that it now sports the MediaTek chip which is seven times faster than the Celeron chips found in other notebooks. Plus it has an Auto Update Expiry of until 2028 making this a sound investment.
Arguably, the one this that may be a dealbreaker for some is the unit’s lack of USI pen support. As such, apps like Squid which is a note thing app is quite limited. Personally, I find USI support good for collaboration. But your needs may be different from mine. But to to this limitation, I am removing one star for this otherwise fine Chromebook. Still I find this Chromebook quite robust and still recommend it to those who have no need for USI pen support.

Air fryers have been around for several years now and there are multiple brands to choose from nowadays. So what makes the Cosori Smart Air Fryer standout among the rest? It’s basically that it is a smart air fryer. But before I delve into that, let me explain the inherent features of this air fryer.
First of all the Cosori Smart Air Fryer has a carafe based design which may or may not appeal to everyone as the other options are the oven toaster design or even the much older glass pot design (think of convection roasters). The model being reviewed has a capacity of 5.8 quarts which in my opinion can fit most needs. Cosori claims that the carafe can handle a five pound chicken but in reality it is really like a four pound chicken at most.
It has a back lit touch panel which has most of the presets found in most touch panel equipped air fryers. Temperature and timer controls are also found in the touch panel. The carafe itself comes in two parts wherein there is a smaller basket in which it gives air to circulate around the food and also it serves as a dripping pan too. Also, this makes it easier to clean. The carafe also has a locking mechanism so as not to accidentally detach the “basket” from the main part. And as a bonus, it also has a skewer rack with five mini skewers. I personally find this a very nice addition as I can now make some mini kebabs on the fly.
So in essence the main unit of the Cosori Air Fryer is no different from the others out there, But there is one main thing that makes it stand out amongst others. It has smart functions. It is wi-fi enabled using the 2.4ghz bandwidth (like most internet connected home devices are) and an app both available for iOS and Android.
The app used by the Cosori Smart Air Fryer is the VeSync app which is basically an app for a variety of devices. Setup is pretty much straightforward. You simply follow directions to pair your air fryer to the app. One caveat though is that it requires you to register and create an account in order for it to work which may be a big deal for some.
So now that the app is set up, what can it do. Basically, the app is a remote control for the air fryer but in addition is also an online cook book which makes it easier to select a menu. And though the Cosori comes with a 100 recipe cookbook, I find the electronic cookbook a nifty add-on to the air fryer experience. It’s not needed though but it gives me more options on what to cook and not only making the air fryer a glorified oven roaster.
Overall, I am very satisfied with the feature set of this air fryer. And though I must admit, the smart functions may not be for everyone it is always nice to have. And one can always use the touch panel to operate this air fryer. For its price point I feel this is a good value dent the added smart functions and is highly recommended.

A great cordless phone for those who need one

Telephone landlines are slowly becoming extinct nowadays with the advent of cell phones. Still it has its purposes. In my case I work at home and I still find a need for a landline for fax communication for documents (Email arguably is not HIPPA compliant.) So of course, I have an all-in-one printer for that. That said the land line subscription that I pay for my home office is way underutilized. Here comes the Panasonic KX-TGD890 cordless phone.
Cordless phones as we all know have been around for two to three decades and not much have change then Basically it is old tech. Still the Panasonic KX-T6D890 still has its virtues. First is that like all all cordless phones, it has a base and can be expandable by purchasing separate handsets. Needless to say there are variants where several handsets are bundled with the main unit. The unit being reviewed is only for the single variant model.
The main features of this cordless phone include the following: 1) It has a digital answering machine. This may be a no brainer but most telcos nowadays put an additional charge for voice mail services. This built-in feature saves you money obviously; 2) This model boasts of long battery life for its handsets. But what is not noted in the box is that it uses rechargeable AAA batteries instead of proprietary batteries. This makes things simpler since should the batteries get worn out, they can be easily replaced; 3) It has a full duplex speakerphone. This feature is standard in all cellphones, so this is also a must in cordless phone; 4) It has a talking caller id function which is also bilingual. This for me is a nifty feature as you don’t have to look at the handset to know who’s calling; 5) It has an auto Robo Call block which is a feature not found in most cordless handset not even in my older Panasonic cordless phone this model will replace. Of course there is Nomorobo, but the additional protection for spam calls is always a welcome feature; and 6) It has also Bluetooth capabilities. And though this may be a feature not everyone needs, I find it very useful as I can pair my headphones with the landline thereby freeing my hands during conversations. In other words I can multi-task while discussing things with clients and fellow remote workers.
There’s really no more for me to really discuss the “virtues” of this phone as this phone is perfect for someone Iike me who works from home and has a need for a landline. I would highly recommend this phone.!

Fun and easy to use but no support

The Snaptain P30 is an entry level drone (or quadcopter as they were called back in the day) that is easy and fun to use. It has a 4K camera installed and can be used to take snap shots and video as you operate the drone. Setup of the drone is primarily easy. First, thing to do as with any new device is to charge both the drone and remote. Unfortunately only one USB-C cable is provided so you may want to use another cable you might have. It does not come with a charger so it is recommended that you use a 5V charger. Charging the remote controller tales around an hour or so, so charging times are fairly reasonable. The charging time of the drone itself takes around three to four hours. Which makes it quite unbearable given that flight time is only at twenty minutes.
Upon charging and powering on the drone kit, you are are then required to download an app which is available both in iOS and Android. You are then required to connect to the wi-fi signal of the drone. And for its initial connection, you are then required to calibrate the drone. Just simply follow instructions.
The drone itself is initially set to beginner mode which you can change to advance mode through the app. Operation is fairly easy at start. First you have to attach your phone to the remote before operation. Your phone also acts as a monitor for the drone. Once ready, operating the drone is simply done by using the controller. Navigation is fairly easy as using the controller levers are self intuitive. For beginners, I highly recommend operating the unit while using line of sight so as to familiarize yourself with operating the drone. Once you are more comfortable, you can now go to advance mode wherein higher altitudes can be reached
The drone itself weighs only 249g which does not entail getting a drone license nor registration in most states. That said, it also has its drawbacks since operating such a light drone may pose challenges even with the slightest wind. And with like most drones, this model has built-in GPS. The best benefit so far is the return to home function. Just with a press of a button on the remote controller, the drone automatically returns to where it initially took off and shuts down. However, in my initial usage, the return to home (RTH) function seems wonky at best. It was basically a hit or miss for me even though the distance from me was around 20 feet only.
As mentioned earlier this drone has a 4K camera. And while it is a 4K camera, video and stills are not the sharpest. Resolution of pictures taken are only 96dpi. And while 4K videos are known for their large file sizes, these are fairly small since the video files are saved in MP4 format. But then again, one should not expect truly high resolution on a beginner drone. For its intended users, the camera resolution in my opinion is satisfactory.
And while the Snaptain P30 is fun and easy to use, I do have a couple of gripes. First, is that it comes with only one battery. Other Snaptain drones have two batteries included even the lower end models. I have noticed also in the video guide found in the app that the drone kit shown has two batteries. And this leads me to my second gripe wherein there is not support for this specific model in the Snaptain website itself meaning that I cannot even get an electronic version of the manual or find a link where to purchase a spare battery. As such, it is hard for me to recommend this model until such time that Snaptain can provide support for this model in spite of the fact that it is an easy and fun to use model.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

It converts your iPad into a heavy duty laptop!

Urban Armor Gear is a brand know for making heavy duty cases foe both cellphones and tablets. The UAG Bluetooth Rugged Keyboard with Trackpad is no different. And though this keyboard case has been around for quite some time, it is still worth reviewing this product.
The UAG Bluetooth Rugged Keyboard is in essence the same as previous iterations of this product save for the fact that this is specifically form fitted for the 10th generation iPad which sports a 10.9 inch screen.
This product comes in two pieces whereas the main case is a rugged stand alone case which can be attached magnetically to the keyboard. This IMO is very handy if you simply want to use your iPad only. After all, iPads and tablets in general are designed really as touch screen devices,
Once attached to the keyboard, the product becomes a keyboard case and both the case and keyboard are heavy duty which according to the manufacturer can withstand an eight foot drop. Of course I have no intention of finding it out but I will the trust the company’s word for that and thus having a sense of security for my iPad.
The keyboard is connected via bluetooth and not by POGO connectors. It is capable of having two bluetooth devices connected simultaneously. One for the iPad itself and two presumably for another device perhaps a mouse. I haven’t tested this for now since I am quite content with just using the trackpad. And my case I do not intend to use my iPad as my main computing device.
As for the keyboard itself, typing the keyboard is in essence like typing on a laptop as it has some sturdiness and the keys are basically tactile. I have used folding keyboards for my iPad and I must say this is way better than those portable keyboards.
Charging of the keyboard takes a couple of hours and is rated at thirty hours of battery life. It has an auto-off feature or sleep mode and a dedicated power button so save on energy. For the most part the battery life of this product is good enough for my needs.
There is really not much more for me to add to the benefits of this keyboard case. But if you do plan to use your iPad as your main computing device, this product is a high recommend since given the ruggedness of the case itself and the tactility of the the keys themselves make this the perfect accessory for your iPad.

A shiver packed with features!

The Philips Norelco Shaver 7600 is one of Philips’ latest offering for its shaving line. Having used the S5000 and S9000 series, I would definitely say the Philips S7600 is between the two models. It has the shaving head of similar to the premium S9000 series and provides a much better shave compared to the lower S5000 series. But unlike the S9000 series which has a premium build, the S7600 has a similar build quality to the lower S5000 (basically plastic and rubber) series hence making this a middle model among the three models mentioned.
But what makes the S7600 stand out among the three shavers? First, it has a retractable trimmer. Most of Philips’ shavers provide a detachable trimmer which is quite easy to lose. Now this is a big deal if you have a beard and can be quite frustrating. Thus an attached retractable trimmer is perfect for those who have beards since it is always there. But personally, this is a non issue for me since I do not maintain a beard.
Second, it has an app. An app you say? Well almost everything now has an app nowadays. But this is a first for me after shaving for around forty years. The app is both available in iOS and Android. It connects via bluetooth to your shaver and records your shaving history. It basically tracks how often you shave and how you shave. It provides you with techniques on how to shave shown in the app. And you do not need to connected all the time to the app. Once you reconnect, the app syncs all your data. But again I have been shaving for forty years thus this is not a deal breaker for me. But it may be useful for others.
Lastly, this like most higher priced cleaning shavers from Philips, it has a cleaning dock. This can be quite handy as you just dock your shaver and turn it on and it self cleans. I however really have no use for it since 1) the cleaning gel is hard to find in my place and 2) again I have been shaving for forty years. Running water has been working well for me.
Overall this is a very good shaver and I recommend it for others. But if the app and cleaning gel are not important for you a lower priced Norelco such as the S6000 series may be better for you. But I do find this shaver to be quite useful.

A great dash cam bundle!

The Nextbase 320XR is a very convenient dash cam bundle. It has a front camera and a rear camera which pretty much enables you to feel secure when you drive. But ;let tell you first that this is nota 4K camera but a 1080P or FHD camera. Still that is very good quality and you’re not making a vlog but rather capturing events in case of an accident. So 1080p or FHD is sufficient enough. The Nextbase 320XR records in MP4 format which is practically universal and there is no need for special software to view MP4 files though Nextbase provides support for video in your computer. But being in MP4 format, I have on tried nor used it since I have my own preferred software. But for those who are curious, Nrxtbase has the MyNextbase Player. This is only for PC though. But Nextbase also offers the free MyNextbase Cloud service which is both available for PC and Mac OS. Again, I have preference for my own video editing software. (But obviously I would prefer not to use any as that would mean being involved in an accident.)
Having a rear camera is quite useful especially if you have an older model car. Not only does it record events while driving, it also acts as a rear view camera when backing up. It has a mode options wherein you can have PIP (Picture-in-picture) either on the left or right sides. It can also switch from front camera to rear view camera only modes to.
Installation is fairly simple. The front mount is installed via a 3M sticker wherein you connect the main camera via magnet. (A spare sticker mount is also provided.) A USB power port connected through your car’s cigarette lighter port. A separate internal power source is also available from Nextbase but that may require professional installation. So it’s more practical to just use your cigarette lighter port.
The rear view camera port also has a mount with a 3M sticker and is also magnetic so you can attach the rear camera. It is powered by a provided wire. A push tool is also provided to make it easier to hide the wires in your car’s edges.
One feature I like about this camera too is the inclusion of an intelligent parking mode which can detect motion when parked and eventually capture video. This is very useful if you encounter a hit and run accident when your car is parked.
Overall, I am satisfied with this camera and I have owned this for around two weeks now. I have not encountered any issues with it. I would definitely recommend this camera to all.

The Samson Go Mic Video USB microphone with webcam is the perfect addition to your desktop monitor or a replacement for your laptop built-in webcam and microphone. The physical design is radically different from traditional microphone or webcam design as it is a collapsible which gives it which when collapsed is about the size of a battery phone charger. Do note this is the upgrade of the popular Samson mic since it now includes a webcam.
The Samson USB mic connects to your PC via a USB-C cable (provided) and is both PC and Mac compatible. No drivers are needed as this is already plug-and-play for both platforms. Once expanded, the Samson can be clipped on the monitor, attached to a mini-tripod or simply stand on its own.
What makes this different is that the included mic has both cardioid and omni polar modes, meaning by selecting a switch on the side, the microphone can be directional which is good for video calls or blogging and and also be set as omni-directional which makes it perfect for group calls. The downside though not a deal breaker is that a foam or deadcat is not included which makes the mic record unwanted background noise ar times,
The included video cam is 1080p which is better than most built-in webcams found in most laptops. Not much can be said here save for the fact that it works as intended. Also, I wish a cover foot he webcam has been incorporated in the design. And lastly, a jack si included should you prefer to use use earphones,
The Samson USB mic with FHD webcam is truly a nice accessory for your PC or Mac. I would recommend to anyone.

It works but it has a dealbreaker for me

Note: This surveillance system requires: 1) basic knowledge of internet connectivity and the managing of apps; and more importantly 2) some basic handyman knowledge including diagram reading, drilling, and low voltage wire connection. Should you feel that you cannot do this yourself, it is strongly suggested you get a professional installer or at least someone who can assist you in the installation of this surveillance system
The Swann Fourtify Wireless System is the company’s latest product attempting to gain a slice of the pie in the wireless camera system. But as to manage expectations, the Swann Fourtify system is not totally wireless as that is the territory of the Swan CoreCam series which I also have. Rather the Swann Fourtify system is a four camera system (hence “Fourtify”) and has a wireless or wifi enbled main camera which also acts as a hub or base wherein three other cameras are “wired” to it. Most of Swann’s product lines have a separate base or hub connected to your router and the cameras are either wired all the way to the base or hub or are connected via wifi. I am saying this as some existing owners and reviewers do complain that it it is not wireless. Perhaps it should have been branded as wifi enabled,
Now since this is a “semi-wireless” system, your knowledge in reading diagrams come into play. Simply put the main camera has input jacks for the other three cameras and a power cord. This power cord has a splitter at the end wherein the other three cameras are connected for power. A power adapter is included as the main supply of power.
Now before you go out installing the cameras, make sure that the system works. Connect the cameras as per the diagram, download the app, create a free account (though a paid tier is also available too) and place the main camera to where you will mount it. Once verified, you can then start physically installing the system. And the time needed to install the system depends on the planned layout of your system.
Upon installation of my Swann Fourtify wireless system, I have noted three things. First the main camera tends to be warm which is normally not the case. I have gotten in touch with Swann and was told that a slight temperature increase is expected since the main camera also acts as the hub or base. Second, the base camera can only get a 10% signal strength mounted in my porch. Surprisingly, my CoreCam has a signal strength ranging from 55% to 70%. The Fortify main camera has two antennas and the CoreCam has an internal one. In spite of that, I have noticed connecting to the app is still fairly responsive.
Another thing I have noticed is that the field of view of the Fourtify is narrower than my CoreCam and also other wireless camera. But what really surprised me is that all cameras can only be aimed up and down and cannot be used to pivot. This quite honestly is a dealbreaker for me as even though the cameras work fine and even the wires were long enough, the inability to properly position the cameras the way I want it is a dealbreaker for me. The only way to provide an able of view is to add wedges when mounting the cameras which will entail additional work and costs too. A simple pivoting mount is the solution for this.
As such, it is very hard for me to recommend this product until such time Swann can address the wifi issue (via firmware update) and come up with a swiveling or pivoting design for the cameras.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Every time I try to print or scan it tells me that I need to replace an ink cartridge to access anything on the printer. Ex: I replace the magenta and print one black and white document then it tells me I need to replace the magenta again. Epson customer service tells me "replace the ink cartridge" and nothing else. Printing one 5 page black and white document per month is costing me approximately $20 per month.

Everytime you replace a cartridge, calibration reduces ink in the other cartridges. You'd be better off with tri-color cartridges,

You have to manually set the APN for AT&T as settings for AT&T are not pre-configured. Contact AT&T for the correct settings.

Will this work on a north-facing covered porch?
As long as there is enough light not necessarily direct sunlight , shiuld still work. Though some solar devices tend to oberheat when under direct sunight like batteries, I cannot ascertain if this is the case. Mine uses only indirect sunlight.

Has anyone noticed it being hot? Not quite sure if it would be ok for my laptop.
It becomes very hot. As per my initial use it use somewhere between 60-70C but I've read someone measure it as high as 81C. I purchased a 1mm copper heatsink with thermal tape and attached it to this SSD. As per my measurement temperatures range from 34C to 46C. I've read somewhere 50C is still considered normal or acceptable. Note not purchase the 3mm heatsinks (the ones with fins) as they are designed for desktops. The 1mm copper heatsink fits perfectly on ,y HP Pavilion gaming laptop replacing the meatl bracket (with thermal paste) holding the old SSD.

Soli motion sensing technology was added. You can have basic controls of the hub by just swiping over the screen. But generally Soli is used to track your sleep instead of cameras. Other than that, faster processing and slightly better sound quality were added too.
