It's a premium adapter

In the age of wireless everything, a USB to Ethernet adapter has almost no use. But there are times that you need one. For example, in offices that prefer wired connections for security purposes or simply in hotels that still haven’t upgraded yet to WiFi an Ethernet would be a godsend. But unfortunately, your best options would be cheaply made adapters.
Here comes the Platinum USB 3.0 to Ethernet adapter. Unlike other adapters this one speaks of premium quality. It comes in an elegant box (Well the box isn’t really important. And the adapter itself is enclosed in silver metal with a white cable perfectly matching your Apple computer but still functional for PCs as well.
As expected, it works as advertised though I’ve noticed in my initial tries it’s a bit slower compared to a computer with a built-in Ethernet port. But that is expected for all adapters. Nonetheless it is still functional and comes in handy when you need it.
Not much more can be said but if you want a premium adapter, this is it.

Great 65-inch TV!

The Hisense H8F series is one of two series released this year by Hisense the other being the more expensive Quantum Dot H9F series. This review focuses specifically on the 65” H8F model.
The Hisense H8F is a sleek 65” flat-screen smart TV weighing in only at 44 lbs including the stands. It’s thin profile enables this to happen. And while for most thickness and weight are not major issues, for those wanting to mount their TV this would be a boon for them as reference, older 65” flat screens weigh in up to 75lbs. Another attribute of this TV is the almost invisible bezel it has making this model shine above in the looks department compared to other brands.
The TV has a 60hz refresh rate and boasts a motion rate of 240 (more on that later. As for connectivity, the TV has four HDMI 2.0a inputs with the first one being ARC ready. It has also support for wireless a/b/g/n/ac and two USB ports. For older compatibility, it has an RCA port, antenna port, Ethernet, digital (optical) and analog outputs and an audio in port. There are no buttons on the TV save for the power button located below the IR port on the lower left side of the TV. Pretty much everything save power is exclusively controlled by the included remote. And if used via ARC with a sound bar and Blu-Ray player, the remote becomes a universal one.
The smart features of this TV is run by Android TV which is different step for Hisense which usually use Roku TV. While the latter arguably maybe the most popular, this TV has the Oreo (v 8.0) of Android TV. The primary advantage of Android TV IMO is the wide gamut of apps available on Android as compared to other smart tv platforms. Also, it has Google Chromecast built-in. One thing to note though. While Amazon and Google have become “friends”, this TV does not support Prime Video which is arguably the only downside of Android TV.
Now comes the gist of this TV. The Hisense from my more than a week of using this TV can compare with other branded TVs out there in its price range. And yes there are TVs out there including Hisense’s Tvs that are much cheaper, the H8 series is a cut above these TVs boasting of ULED technology have a wide gamut of colors available but still fall short to quantum dot enabled TVs selling at a much higher price.
One of the key features of this TV is having controls similar to higher end 4k TVs. It has local or backlight dimming, motion enhancement and motion clearness so you can control the clarity of your TV whether or not you want the “soap opera” effect. The 240 motion rate here is not clearly defined but is described as motion enhancement which give you a selection of film, standard smooth and custom controls. Every TV brand his its own term for motion rate. And lastly, aside from the usual brightness and saturation settings, this model has a calibration option for those technically inclined. I am not an expert on this but settings included in discs that have a maximizer option indicate the TV is already optimized with the default settings. Note this TV is capable of handling Dolby Vision HDR and HD R10.
And finally as for the sound, this TV like most TVs has no real impressive audio features. And while it has enhanced sound modes like dbx-tv, TotalSonic and TotalSurround, the two 15-watt speakers give little justice to these features. It’s best to use a sound bar or a complete home theater system to complement this TV. But then again, if you have a TV this big it’s fairly safe to say you are going to use a home theater system. One thing though, ARC setup may be flaky but it still works and can even have pass through Dolby Vision HDR/HDR 10 and Dolby Atmos/DTS-X.
As far as this TV goes, this is a very capable one comparable to other brands at a much lower price point. I’d highly recommend this TV to others. And if this TV is too large for you, there are smaller versions of this TV which has either a 55” or 50” screen.

This is a great monitor!

This latest monitor from Acer is a 27 inch full HD not only provides crisp and vibrant colors but also offers FreeSync technology when paired with a compatible graphics card, eliminates fluctuations in the screen during gaming. I have tried it on a compatible APU/GPU computer and tried some games with it and so far fluctuations were not noticed.
Aside from this new feature, I like the screen size of 27 inches which makes it easier not only to play games but also do some work using word processors and spreadsheets. Controls are easily accessible as they are found in the bottom corner of the monitor. And in fact easy to use. There is barely a need for a manual.
At the back of the screen one can see that there are three connections mainly DVI, VGA and HDMI. The menu of the monitor allows for automatic selection for whatever connection you use. Thus really making this an easy to use monitor.
The monitor is easy to assemble which is basically attaching the stand with a screwdriver necessary for installation. The screen is tiltable for better viewing. One thing to note also is that the screen has a small bezel adding to a better viewing pleasure. And which the colors are crisp and bright, prolonged use does not really provide eyestrain.
This monitor being the latest from Acer is a highly recommended monitor especially if you have a compatible GPU which enables you to have not only a good viewing pleasure but also having a better gaming experience.

It's a great blender. What more can I say?
on August 29, 2019
Posted by: msumulong
from Glendora, CA
I first purchased my MagicBullet a few years ago, though it was fine and still being sold today, it was generally replaced by the NutriBullet system which is still a personal blender but bigger and more powerful. But given the size of the either the Magic Bullet or Nutri Bullet, it was really a hard sell as the only blender in your house. Then comes the new Nutri Blender combo. In essence it functions as a normal blender but can also serve as a personal blender as well. So it’s really a two-in-one product.
But what makes it different from regular blenders? Regular blenders have a wattage of around 600 watts. This is a high powered blender at 1,200 watts. And since it can convert to a personal blender, this gives the NutriBullet Blender an edge over other high powered blenders. And since this is at a price point similar to other high powered blenders, the addition of two individual blender cups gives this more value.
So what can I say aside that this is a great blender? I have no more words for this. And I’d recommend it to everyone.

Decent dash cam
on August 29, 2019
Posted by: msumulong
from Glendora, CA
The Cobra HD Dashcam with iRadar is one of Cobra’s latest offerings in the dash cam space. After road testing it for week, here are my thoughts. The Cobra HD Dashcam is one of the smaller dash cams around and is a plus for me. The roughly 2” is fairly sufficient for my needs. The kit comes with a low profile windshield mount which uses 3M double tape. But personally, I’d prefer mounts using suction cups. Cobra is supposed to sell the mounts but it seems to be made for radar detectors. Other items in the box include a 10-ft usb cord for power, an 18” cord for file transfers, an auto power supply and some quick start guides.
The unit itself is unobtrusive and has the basic functions and features one would find in most dash cams. On the left side would be a connector for the optional gps module and a micro-sd card slot. And while the description says it comes with an 8GB card, mine (as well as others’) came in with a 32GB sd card which is a plus. And like the other dash cams out there, video is looped and the 32GB gives you a long history of your drive. On the right hand side, you have the micro usb port and a mini hdmi port. (I wasn’t able to test the mini hdmi port as of this writing as I have seemed to lose my only mini hdmi cable.)
The unit does not have a touch screen, but it has four tactile buttons for the menu screen. Also, there is an “emergency” camera button on the center top of the unit. This buttons allows you to record video in protected mode, meaning once the video recordings loop, that particular video will not be erased. And on the top right of the unit, there is a power on/off switch which also asks as a volume button.
Like all modern dash cams, it has a G-sensor so that video starts recording when you move the car and also enables your unit to record in “emergency” or “impact” mode in case of collision. The level of sensitivity of the G-sensor can be adjusted in the menu. Aside from that, this model has a collision mode and a lane change mode. While for the most part the collision mode may be annoying and not really needed for my driving habits because it constantly beeps if there is anything near in front of you, I still see value in it as it can be helpful in poor visibility conditions or if you are just tired. The lane change mode I still have to see it actually work. I was not able to get any alert during my initial week of using it.
As for the video mode, all settings from the 1296p Super HD mode to 720p at 30fps, proved to be very good and clear. I also have tried it at night and clarity was acceptable. What I like about the dash cam is the 160 degree viewing mode. Most cheaper dash cams have a viewing angle of 110-120 degrees. Personally, I have set mine at 720p at 30fps as the video quality is sufficient enough for insurance purposes in case of collision. And I can have more videos recorded before the loop starts. After all I am not recording video for showing in a huge 4K TV. But it’s a nice touch if you have that feature. Cobra by the way has included a PC app for video editing. It is simply a basic editing tool and if you have another editing tool, you can dispense with this as the videos recorded are in MOV format.
The features of this dash cam which makes it different form other dash cams are the ability to add in a GPS module and the iRadar app. I am not particularly impressed with the iRadar app ad GPS module as both require a smartphone to function. First of all the iRadar app for this dash cam only provides a map when used together with your smart phone. In order to enable navigation, you have to purchase a separate GPS module. And all smart phones already have built-in map app. And the salient features of iRadar is the roadside alerts. The catch is that the alerts are crowdsourced from other iRadar users and the full features are not free. This is pretty much a hard sell for me because Waze can similarly do it for free plus it obviously have navigation features.
That said, the Cobra Drive HD is still a good performer but I would have to remove a star for the limitations of the iRadar app. Nonetheless, I would still recommend this unit to others as this performs well as a dash cam in its price range.

Great as usual!

We have several Speck cases in our household and I had a similar looking one for my iPhone 6. What I can say is that they are as advertised. Nope I really hadn’t dropped my XR that hard. I only dropped it from two feet several times. But my iPhone 6 with the similar case had some really hard drops. All I can say is that Speck phone cases are durable.
Also like black/color combination of this case. And though smooth, it still can provide a good grip. My only gripe is that it gets smudged easily. Still this design is a good one and I highly recommend it. Would also mind recommending Speck cases for tablets too.

I was expecting more

The JLab Epic Airsport True Wireless Earbuds is an incremental update for the JLab Epic Air Elite True Wireless Earbuds. The most notable difference being the 10 hour battery in between charges and a total of 70 hours of battery life. Also it has an IP 66 sweatproof rating compared to the Epic Air Elite. Charging time is around 4 ½ hours and comes in a somewhat larger charging case.
Both headsets come with eight pairs of eartips and has the same controls. The Airsport has that JLab signature sound which is a hit or miss for some but generally ok. While there is not much to say about the audio quality and fit of the Airsport, call quality has an echo sound and often BT connectivity gets cut off. Also, using Siri leads for the earbuds to disconnect too.
While I like the overall sound of the JLab earbuds (I have three other models), I cannot give this a decent rating due to connectivity issues. Being a flagship product, I am expecting more or at least the functionality should be guaranteed.

Premium esports headset
on August 1, 2019
Posted by: msumulong
from Glendora, CA
The Logitech – G PRO Wired Stereo Gaming Headset is touted for e-sports professionals. But in my honest opinion, I would classify the G PRO as a premium gaming headset. First of all, the G PRO doesn’t sport the usual futuristic designs most gaming headsets have. Rather, the G PRO has the classic design of premium audio headsets around. Save for the mic, one would not think of the G PRO as a gaming headset. With an all-black design save for the logo, aluminum forks, a steel headband, and plush leatherette cushions, its form factor as well as its heft is at par with premium audio around-the-ear headsets out there. Also like its pure audio counterparts, the cable can be removed and as a plus mic too can be removed.
That said, let’s now move on to audio clarity. I initially tested the G PRO on three computers playing music just using the built-in audio drivers namely Realtek, Synaptics, and Intel. In all three computers, audio quality was excellent with the Realtek audio driver providing the best sound. I also had the curiosity to test the audio on my iPhone XR, audio quality is likewise excellent. In addition, call quality was also excellent.
I then tried the G PRO using the USB connector to my gaming rig and I found out the analog connections were slightly better. But then again, I tried it on my gaming rig which has G-HUB installed. Since it has an EQ, you can customize sound settings together with your other Logitech accessories. You can also download profiles from other gamers as well. But personally, I’d rather use the analog controls.
I then tried the G PRO (via analog connection) on two current games I am playing right now which are Star Trek Online and the Halo: Combat Evolved (Yeah it’s dated. But I’m retro.) In both games, audio is more spatial without adjusting anything. And one thing I like about the G PRO is that audio does not distort in higher volumes unlike other headsets.
Overall the G PRO Wired Gaming Headset is an excellent headset should you want higher quality in your gaming and can also work as a normal headset too. This one is definitely a recommended item.

Great pair of Noise Cancelling Headphones
on July 19, 2019
Posted by: msumulong
from Glendora, CA
The WH-XB900N is Sony’s latest offering in its line of noise cancelling headphones. And one can say it is also a younger sibling of Sony’s hugely popular and arguably the best noise-cancelling headphones the flagship WH-1000XM3.
That said, how would now one compare the XB900 to the MX3? The most obvious difference one would note would be the price difference of the two headphones which is $100. So obviously the XB-900 would have some features left out.
Both headphones have generally the same design but notably the XB900 has an over-the-ear design whereas the other would have an around the-ear-design. For some this may be a big deal, but for me as long as my ears are comfortable, there would be no big deal. And the XB900 is quite comfortable.
Being designated as an XB device indicates that the XB900 is heavy on the bass. And it does deliver! I’ve tried this for over a week. It also supports the A2DP, AVRCP, HFP, HSP, SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, and LDAC codecs. But surprisingly, the XB900 does not have the Hi-Res Audio seal like the XM3. And for those who are not really into bass, the music app can adjust the bass levels. The XB900 also does not use the highly rated QN1 chip, but nonetheless can compete with audio quality but supposedly cannot control air pressure inside an airplane. (I cannot attest to this as I haven’t been inside an airplane in years.) And like the flagship, both only support Bluetooth 4.2 which is really disappointing given that Bluetooth 5.0 has been around for some time. Both do support NFC.
The battery life of XB900N like the XM3 is superb rated at 30 hours between charges. I have been using this headphone unit for several hours a week and I’m only around half of the battery life of this unit. The unit takes roughly four hours to fully charge which is a downer for me. But thankfully it has a quick charge mode via USB-C which can give you at least an hour for a 10 to 15 minute charge, enough for it to last until you get home.
The controls of both units use touch controls which is a nice touch. But the XB900N scrimps on others such as it having carry pouch instead of a case and does not include an airplane adapter. Also the cable included does not have gold connectors unlike other Sony headphones. But so far, I haven’t seen anything really negative about the XB900N. As such I am still giving this a five-star rating and would recommend it to anyone looking for a bass heavy pair of headphones.

The Junior of the Home Speaker 500
on July 6, 2019
Posted by: msumulong
from Glendora, CA
After a very frustrating time trying to overcome the update loop, I was finally able to setup the Bose Home Speaker 300. This is the fourth and latest smart speaker released by Bose and is considered the “junior” of the Bose Home Speaker 500. Obvious differences include the size of the HS 300 at roughly six inches tall and the lack of an LCD screen. And unlike the HS 500, this model is not stereo capable but offers a 360-degree monaural sound. The top portion of the HS 300 is similar to the HS 500 which makes it obvious that the operation of both models are the same
Being a smart speaker, obvious requires an app in order to set up this unit which is the Bose Music App. First thing to note is for the app requiring it to discover the unit and enabling a Wi-Fi connection. Next would be to choose which music services you would want and which voice assistant you’d like which are Alexa and Google Assistant. Once setup, you’re pretty much good to go.
You can start playing music by issuing voice command, using the Bose app or via BT or even Airplay. The unit also has an auxiliary jack should prefer to music via cable. The sound output is generally room filling and has a decent but flat sound which may underwhelm some users. The app though has at least bass and treble controls to suit one’s sound preferences. And while the sound output is generally good, I personally feel that this model lacks that “signature” Bose sound which I’m used to.
Operation of the unit is pretty much intuitive and generally no need for a full manual though you can download one. This system enables you to preset six stations. A mute button is also included together with mic on/off button. Likewise, BT and Aux buttons can also be found. And let’s not forget the pause/play and volume buttons. So pretty much that’s it. Also, like other smart speakers there is no power switch. The unit goes to sleep when there is no activity or you can press both the minus and BT buttons simultaneously. And of course you can always use voice commands. Like the HS 500, the HS 300 does not have NFC nor a battery which may be a dealbreaker for some people.
There is a lot to be liked about the Home Speaker 300 after all it is a good speaker. But Bose’s failure to have the model work immediately on day one of release gives a negative impression on the unit and the Bose brand in general. I’d still recommend the it for people interested in the Home Speaker 300. But they should be aware of the nuances of the initial setup. But Bose is aware of this and is already addressing this problem. As such, I am removing one star for an erstwhile good speaker.

Worst experience ever buying this phone
By Gourav
I brought this phone for $50 during Thanksgiving and this phone was delivered to me after 30 days but I thought OK its late but may be worth it.
I start using this phone and haven't made even 5 calls this phone restarting by itself every min, so i did factory reset and tried all other suggestions from online forums but nothing helped. Since this is under warranty i had to ship it Alcatel repair center but on my own pocket expenses, AH!.
Alcatel should cover shipping fees as its their fault that their phone is faulty.
Alcatel don't even have their store/facility locations where i can go give my phone for repair physically rather paying for shipping.
I would also recommend that Best Buy has brand name and they should NOT allow low quality brands/product to be sold on their site.

Alcatel covers shipping costs
April 20, 2017
I also bought mine during Thanksgiving and had the same problem. I called Alcatel and they acknowledged that there is a hardware problem and emailed a shipping label for FedEx. Within a week or so I received a replacement phone via UPS. Do note I did pay for shipping and replacement of my phone. In fairness to Alcatel this replacement phone does not have the random reboots anymore.

Printed well until ink needed replacing
By Macinzim
Every time I try to print or scan it tells me that I need to replace an ink cartridge to access anything on the printer. Ex: I replace the magenta and print one black and white document then it tells me I need to replace the magenta again. Epson customer service tells me "replace the ink cartridge" and nothing else. Printing one 5 page black and white document per month is costing me approximately $20 per month.

Everytime you replace a cartridge, calibration reduces ink in the other cartridges. You'd be better off with tri-color cartridges,

Connect with friends on this unlocked Alcatel Pop 4 smartphone. Its generous 16GB capacity stores more photos and music, and its quad-core CPU ensures speedy performance. The card slot supports a microSD, and the 8-megapixel camera has autofocus for sharper images. The loudspeaker on this Alcatel Pop 4 smartphone plays your favorite tunes.

You have to manually set the APN for AT&T as settings for AT&T are not pre-configured. Contact AT&T for the correct settings.

What phone plans can I use. I want a go phone plan. Like page plus where I can pay 6-10 cents a minute over 3- 4 months. Not a monthly plan.

You can have that option when you try to activate your SIM online.

Is the reception strong? And will it work with post pay plan?

Reception is quite strong. Also it is capable of wifi calling in areas with weak coverage. And it will still work with a post paid plan. Your SIM must be a nano SIM though.

How much available space you get after you activate the phone?

Around 2.8GB left after the phone autoupdates after first opening it. A lot of junkware is installed. Can't seem to port file to SD card though. Still it serve its purpose.

Will printer and Office be compatible with Windows 7

I am considering purchasing HP or Toshiba laptop with Windows 7. This will be upgrade from Windows XP. Will my present printer HP 3100 series be compatible and can I download Windows Office that I have now?
Often printers drivers are update like my HP 1401. If it's the HP Photosmart 3100 series, there are updated drivers. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=447811&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us&submit=Go%20»

Most computers now have a trial version of Office 2007 Home & Student which you can purchase and activate. I also believe you can also download other versions from the Microsoft site.

what do you think of MSI laptops?

How would you rate MSI laptops against other laptops for general applications?
MSI is relatively new and build quality is a bit shoddy. But slowly it has been improving over the years. Specs wise, it's a value for money system.
