Great partner for the Bose 500 Soundbar
on November 8, 2018

from Glendora, CA
The Bose 500 Sub-woofer is the companion sub-woofer for the Bose 500 Soundbar. Setup is quite straightforward. Just plug the device and put it in a corner and use the Bose Music app to add it to the Bose 500 Soundbar. Also this works for the Bose 700 and Bose Soundtouch 300 theough both soundbars have their matching sub-woofers. But that’s the beauty of it. It’s a mix and match between these soundbars.
That said this sub-woofer has mixed review with some claiming that it lacks punch. While Bose does not really release specs and is lower than the Bose 700 sub or the AM300 sub, this relatively small sub-woofer can still pack a punch. You just have to do the setup in the Bose Music App.
Do note the Bose 500 is the entry level of the two Alexa enabled soundbars, its performance though having the signature Bose sound may not appeal to everyone. For those wanting a louder sound then the 700 series or the 300 series or maybe even the Acoustimass line maybe better for you. But for those having a smaller space, the Bose 500 sub can adequately supplement the Bose 500 soundbar with room filling and thumping sound. For those with a Bose 500, this is a highly recommended addition.

The stylish Bose Soundbar 500 speaker is meant to be heard, not seen. Its thin profile fits discreetly under the TV screen, while its powerful acoustics fill the room with sound. And with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant built in, all your favorite music is just an ask away, or use it as a central hub to control your existing smart home devices.

Great perfoming soundbar!
on November 8, 2018

With the advent of smart speakers entering the soundbar space, Bose recently released two smart enabled (Alexa) based soundbars namely the Bose 500 and Bose 700 series. This review focuses on the Bose 500 soundbar which is the lower end of the two soundbars.
Given that this is smaller than the 700 series soundbar, it is geared for smaller spaces as it measures 31 inches in length which is perfect for 40-inchTVs in my opinion but obviously any TV can do.
And though Bose does not really release specs on speakers, I can say that this is a very much capable speaker of creating room-filling sound without sound being distorted at higher volume. (But if you still want louder then the 700 is the soundbar for you.) It has that classic Bose signature sound that it’s either you like it or hate it. But if you hate it, you wouldn’t read the reviews here.

And given that it has that classic signature sound from Bose, one may ask who would one choose it over the Bose Solo 5 which is a top selling product from Bose but sells fro half the price. It’s mainly because of both wireless connectivity and expandability which the Bose Solo 5 does not have.
I like the fact that Bose made this soundbar (as well as the Bose 700 and Bose Soundtouch 300) have wireless expandability. The Bose 500 and include the 700 and 300 as well are modular in design in which a sub-woofer and surround speakers can be added. And though each soundbar has its own matching sub-woofer, they can be mix-matched depending on your preference for the sub-woofer. The rear speakers work in all three soundbars. That said, Bose has ensured that you can have a basic setup or on with more bass or a complete 5.1 system. It’s all up to the user. And that’s a good thing. I only wish Bose could have release a whole package at a discounted price though.
What differentiates the Bose 500 (and 700) from the Soundtouch 300 is the addition of Alexa thereby putting Bose back in the game. From today’s trend, sound from speakers is not the only the factor in purchasing one but also other features such as wireless connectivity. This has already started to become a norm for soundbars. And as far as Alexa is concerned, it performs as expected in the Bose 500 I have though there was one instance that I have to activate Alexa again to make it function.
As far as this soundbar is concerned, this performs as expected and is highly recommended. And for those wanting a fuller sound the Bose 500 sub-woofer is highly recommended and might as well include the rear surround speakers as well for a full home theater experience.

Overall good ANC headphones
on November 6, 2018
Posted by: msumulong
from Glendora, CA
I have had this headset for about a week and here are my thoughts on this unit. First the material of the neckband is a combination of plastic and some sort of silicone material. Also it is much smaller compared to other models’ neckbands and is rather soft. This is a plus for this model. The earpieces are conical in shape and obviously differs from the spherical earpieces of other models. It is made from silicone and provides a comfy fit. Like most headsets, it comes in three pairs – small, medium and large.
Operating the unit may be a bit of a challenge as documentation is very scarce. And as of this writing, here is barely written support in the Plantronics’ website. Fortunately the companion app has directions for this and other models.
And now for the main gist of this model. The audio output is pretty good even without noise cancelling turned on though it is turned on by default. Likewise the buds provide a good seal in your ear partially isolating noises. Turning the unit on is done the usual way wherein you press the center button once. And to pair it to a phone, pressing the center button for 3-4 seconds.
There is not much to control using the buttons in the unit but downloading the app and pairing it with the headset provides more control options such as enhancing bass. With the app, noise cancelling can be turned on and off can deliver extra bass.
Battery life is neither low nor good which is rated at eight hours with ANC on. But I find odd that if ANC is turned off, battery life is at only ten hours. But overall this is a very decent pair of ANC headsets. And I would recommend it to other users out there.

Feature packed party speaker
on October 19, 2018
Posted by: msumulong
from Glendora, CA
This speaker in essence is a party speaker as its design convention radically departs from Sony speakers. Looking at the screen itself would reveal the drivers resembling a face. Some would like it some would not. And instead of a cube it is sort of roundish the size of a football or soccer ball will a handle at the back. So again, some people will not like the aesthetics of this speaker but this suits me just fine.
That being said let’s now get into its performance. First of all the speaker seems to be in mono rather than stereo which is again a departure of Sony speakers this size. Quality of audio output is rather typical of the Sony sound signature, which is rather conservative. Unfortunately, the unit like most Bluetooth speakers do not have bass and treble control. But to compensate for that Sony has added a Live mode which enhances audio output.
Audio output, though I cannot find any information in the manual and based on my estimate, would be around 40 watts, which is room filling and can provide a dancing mood. In support of this the speaker actually has mood lights to enhance you’re your listening experience.
But the real differentiators for this model include the following. First the battery is rated (and tested by me) to last 18 hours as compare to the average 10 hours for tor this class of speakers. Second it has splash proof features which you’d normally find only in smaller speakers. And to top it all, it has Google Assistant. You wouldn’t find or at least hardly find a Google enabled smart speaker that has these feature sets. Hence, this model is a feature packed speaker which can deliver the goods. And I would not hesitate to recommend this speaker to others.

Excellent soundbar
on October 11, 2018

I recently got this sound bar and all I can say is that this is the better sounding soundbar out in the market. First thing you’ll notice is the size and heft of both the soundbar itself and the included sub-woofer. The size of the soundbar itself is almost the length of a 65” tv and is quite heavy. That being no surprise since it has 13 drivers. Likewise the sub-woofer is rather large for what comes with soundbars.
Setup is a breeze as pairing is automatic once you power-on the unit. And operation is pretty much forward as the remote control is as simplistic as possible. There are dedicated buttons for the sub-woofer and Bluetooth for quick access. A sound mode for scrolling three sound modes. And a settings mode to control volumes for the different drivers.
It took me quite sometime to review this unit as I have tried to watch several movies to assess the soundbar’s audio output. Titles I’ve watched initially which are either in Dolby 5.1/7.1 and DTS include LOTR, The Hobbit, U-571, Behind Enemy Lines and Avatar. I have also watch GOTR and John Wick which has Dolby Atmos and American Made which has DTS-X. Overall I am quite impressed with the audio output as there this sound clarity and thumping bass which doesn’t distort and muffle the soundtrack.
That said the unit is still front heavy in audio and missing an immersive sound experience unlike the more expensive HW-N950 which is the same with the addition of two rear speakers which makes it a 7.1.4 system compare to the 5.1.2 system the HW-N850 has. Fortunately, this unit can be upgraded with the SWA-9000s making it a 7.1.2 system. Still a bit short compared to the N950 though.
But the good thing though is that Samsung put the SWA-9000S on sale and that made a whole lot of difference when I purchased. So this is a fairly cheap way to upgrade your system if you can't justify the $400 to $500 price difference between the N950 and N850. With the rear speakers setup, here are now ambient sounds that I can hear which I didn't hear before. Fortunately as of this writing Samsung put the SWA-9000S on sale everywhere thus prompting me to add the SWA-9000S wireless speakers to the N850.
There are other nice features included in this soundbar albeit Samsung specific such as connecting via wi-fi and using the Smartthings app thereby gaining more features to the unit. Also the unit is supposedly Aexa enable too. While these are nice to have features, I am sticking to my setup having the additional wireless speakers as good quality immersive sound is what one primarily looks for in an audio system. And in this regard, I am quite satisfied with the output the Samsung HW-N850 and would definitely recommend it to others.

A highly capable portable scanner
on September 23, 2018
Posted by: msumulong
from Glendora, CA
In an age where all-in-one printers abound one may ask “Why should I purchase a dedicated scanner?” There are two answers for that 1) being for hi-resolution scanning good enough for professional desktop publishing and 2) fast scanning for documentation purposes. This scanner fits the latter.
A bit larger than a carton of eggs, this scanner is fast for its class. It scans at 25ppm which is a jump from the using 16-18ppm scan rate for portable scanners of previous generations. Having duplex capabilities that rate can be doubled further making it a perfect tool for small office and home use and also for road warriors who need the size and speed of scanning. People who work with numerous documents and who need to digitize documents such as those in the legal profession, insurance and real estate industries would greatly benefit from this.
The ADS-1700W supports wireless connectivity albeit at 2.4Ghz only but also has support for USB 2.0 and 3.0. That said it gives the scanner versatility regarding its usage. Aside from scanning and saving to your computer, it can save it to the cloud. It has support for saving documents in a network drive, an ftp site, an email server and popular cloud services such as Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive. And most conveniently even on a USB drive.
The scanner works both through your computer or directly through the unit itself. Do note that with a USB drive, you do not need a computer to scan documents and pictures. In addition to that is that the scanner provides support for what Brother terms workflows wherein you can program routine tasks and saves them so that you have one-touch operations for your most routine tasks. Add to that there is a built in card slot so that you can easily scan business cards and id cards which is a nifty feature not found in other scanners.
As part of cost cutting cutting measures like what most other tech companies do, the scanner no longer comes with a full blown manual and a cd for software. The software for the ADS-1700w iPrint&Scan is downloadable from the Brother website and is quite capable as a scanner app but upon schecking my installed apps it occupies almost 1GB of space. If you want a smaller profile Windows Scan app can be used though it has limited functionality for the scanner including the ability to scan ids and create workflows. Nonetheless, it still works for basic functionality.
Also included are PaperPort and Power PDF software from Nuance. While the former is free if you register, the latter is not free and only offers a 15-day trial. As for my own use I have no use for this as there are free and online options for the functionality the bundled apps offer. What is missing though is a OCR software for conversion to document and spreadsheet files and a receipt reading app. These added features are often found in other scanners and is a minus for Brother. AFAIK the previous scanner the ADS-1500 has a reader app and even a receipt carrier sheet.
Overall, I am satisfied with the feature set of the ADS-1700W. However, due to the lack of additional software features for this scanner, I will give one less mark. But still this is still a very much capable product and would still recommend this given that the software limitations would be considered.

Good battery life, mediocre sound
on September 12, 2018
Posted by: msumulong
from Glendora, CA
I have received the LG PK5 last week. And these are my first impressions of this Bluetooth offering from LG. First size is pretty much compact. But the handle bars which more or less functions as a cage would be a mixed bag for some people. For some the handle bars offers a unique design which makes the speaker easier to carry. But for some these would seem like a monstrosity which just makes the speakers bigger.
The build quality is pretty decent. And though the speakers are made of plastic, ituses better quality plastic and has a seemingly solid construction though obviously not shatter proof. It has two front facing speakers with bass coming out from the side.
What stands out here is that the unit is IPX5 certified meaning it is generally splash proof which makes is perfect for use beside the pool or on the beach. The connector ports have a rubber cover to keep them from being wet. In addition to that the unit has variable lights which blink based on the beat of the music. Personally, I do not have a need for that but it may come in handy should you be in a dancing or party mood.
The controls for the unit are located on top unit and are pretty much standard for Bluetooth devices. There is a power button, a Bluetooth pairing button, two volume controls, a pause/play button and a control for the lights that also acts as a button answering calls, a two sound enhancing buttions. What stands out is that is has an app for controlling the unit although the available version is only for Android. I have tried pairing the unit on Android and iOS devices and pairing was a breeze. And I have tried the app and it seems to work well with the speaker unit. And arguably the best feature of this unit is battery life. It is rated at 18 hours of use. And so far the unit performs as expected which is a plus as most speakers in this class have only 8-10 hours worth of juice.
Another feature of the unit is that you can wirelessly “daisy chain” the unit to another one for increased volume. And though the volume at 20 watts is pretty decent for a small living room, I cannot ascertain if output is in stereo or not as I cannot notice spatial sound. It also uses Meridian technology not only to boost voice clarity and increase bass. But sadly in spite of this, audio seems to be flat sounding for me and lacks the richness for speakers this size. Using a wired connection even seemed to sound worse. And since I only have one unit, I couldn’t test if connecting two speakers would provide stereo and spatial sound.
Also my gripes in this model is that LG seemingly cheaped out on standard accessories. The unit is powered by a supplied USB-C cable but did not include a charger. Also LG did not provide a male-to-male cord so that you can immediately use it if your device does not have Bluetooth. Lastly, the included documentation is wanting. But fortunate a more comprehensive guide can be be downloaded from the LG website.
So as much as I am satisfied with the feature set, I cannot provide more stars as I want to due to the mediocre audio output of speaker unit. But in fairness, this is the only unit its class that I have seen that can last 18 hours.

Good clarity headphones
on September 4, 2018
Posted by: msumulong
from Glendora, CA
I recently received this unit and my initial impressions that this is a light but comfortable headset. The headband is made of plastic but a metal band also reinforces it. The headphones are not over-the-ear but rather on-ear meaning the cups press on to your ears rather than cover around your ears. For some there is a presence for the former but in this case, the cups press softly as the cushions are quite comfortable to the ear. Overall, the headphones seem well built but only time will tell if they will be able to handle day-to-day use.
The headphones come with a neoprene case, which is a nice addition not found in most headphones. Also, there is a usb dongle included for use with computers without Bluetooth capabilities and also the charging cable can also be used to connect to the headphones and at the same time charge it while in use. Further, the cable included can be used with any usb plug to charge the headphones.
Pairing the headphones is a breeze in devices with built-in usb. And if the dongle is used, it is automatically paired to the headphones. I cannot ascertain if the device’s Bluetooth range is really 100 feet as there are numerous walls in my and connections get dropped from time-to-time. But direct range from the device seems to provide a solid connection.
I have tested the headphone on iOS devices and on a Windows 10 machine both via Bluetooth and cable. I have done a Face Time call and call quality is impressive. Voice clarity is excellent both in outgoing and incoming parties. I also experimented with Skype on Windows to a Chromebook and I also got the same call quality. Furthermore, I tested this headphone for music and though the clarity is there, bass seems to be lacking. But then again this is not designed really for music. Still the sound is decent enough for use while working in the office.
So far, my wish list includes that the headphones should have manual volume and mute controls, a 3.5mm jack and better documentation. These are what prevents me from giving this five stars. But still I would highly recommend this as the main function of this gadget is above expectations.

Excellent retro heaphones
on July 28, 2018
Posted by: msumulong
from Glendora, CA
Physically this product is styled similar to portable cassette player headphones. Not only does it have black foam headphone covers, it also has orange ones making this a truly retro device. Of course it has sone differences and the main one would be the addition of bluetooth. But unlike most bluetooth headphones, this one has an equalizer mode to fine tune your audio preferences. Audio quality is pretty much decent but its design being retro allows music to escape. This is where in-ear heaphones have an advantage. Battery life is pretty much good and can last me the whole day. As for the fit, this pair is pretty much comfortable. But I wish the headpones were a bit larger. Lastly charging the headphones are a bitcunbersome as you the usb port is quite hard to reach. And due to these minor cons, I am removing one star. But don't fret on these. If you still want to go retro, I would still recommend these headphones as they still provide a cool and retro feel and have decent audio and battery performance.

Awesome sub-woofer
on July 22, 2018
Posted by: msumulong
from Glendora, CA
First of all I am no audiophile. I am making this review as someone upgrading from using a passive sub-woofer to an active one. It goes without saying that the sound emitted by this 240-watt sub is much louder than my previous 50-watt sub. That said clarity in this sub is notable compared to the usual muffled bass from sub. From that point of view, there's not much to say about sub-woofers. But one neat feature of this sub-woofer is the app that controls the settings of this sub-woofer. Of course you can reach out of the back to control the settings but using it from your phone is always a plus. There is also an optional wireless control and if you also have compatible speakers you can use a mobile app to fine tune your whole speaker setup.

Worst experience ever buying this phone
By Gourav
I brought this phone for $50 during Thanksgiving and this phone was delivered to me after 30 days but I thought OK its late but may be worth it.
I start using this phone and haven't made even 5 calls this phone restarting by itself every min, so i did factory reset and tried all other suggestions from online forums but nothing helped. Since this is under warranty i had to ship it Alcatel repair center but on my own pocket expenses, AH!.
Alcatel should cover shipping fees as its their fault that their phone is faulty.
Alcatel don't even have their store/facility locations where i can go give my phone for repair physically rather paying for shipping.
I would also recommend that Best Buy has brand name and they should NOT allow low quality brands/product to be sold on their site.

Alcatel covers shipping costs

I also bought mine during Thanksgiving and had the same problem. I called Alcatel and they acknowledged that there is a hardware problem and emailed a shipping label for FedEx. Within a week or so I received a replacement phone via UPS. Do note I did pay for shipping and replacement of my phone. In fairness to Alcatel this replacement phone does not have the random reboots anymore.

Printed well until ink needed replacing
By Macinzim
Every time I try to print or scan it tells me that I need to replace an ink cartridge to access anything on the printer. Ex: I replace the magenta and print one black and white document then it tells me I need to replace the magenta again. Epson customer service tells me "replace the ink cartridge" and nothing else. Printing one 5 page black and white document per month is costing me approximately $20 per month.

Everytime you replace a cartridge, calibration reduces ink in the other cartridges. You'd be better off with tri-color cartridges,

Who says you need a big box for big bass? The Bose Bass Module 500 will take your music, movies, and more to the next level. Its rich, thunderous bass in a compact, 10-inch cube makes it easy to hide and even easier to hear. Wireless connectivity allows you to place the Bose Bass Module 500 nearly anywhere. Leave it next to the TV or put it under your entertainment center - the choice is yours.

Can this be paired with the Bose SA5?

AFAIK it is only compatible only with the Bose 500, 700 and Soundtouch 300 soundbars.

Is the 500 newer than the 300 and can you use with cinematic 15

The Bose 500 as well as the 700 were released August this year with the 700 being the replacement for the 300 as the latter does not have Alexa capabilities. All three soundbars like most soundbars have built-in ampliers. Also the three soundbars can use each others sub-woofers and share a common rear surround speaker model. But AFAIK these the 500 and the other models were not designed for the Cinemate series.

Google Play store states this phone does not have an Accelerometer, so cannot be used with Google glass.

Given that it is a low end Android phone, do not expect that it will have an accelerometer nor NFC. GPS and BT are standard features though.
