A decent entrly level laptop

The HP 14-dq3000dx is a basic and entry-level computer aimed at a younger crowd or those who want simple device. If you’re looking for a speed machine then this device is not for you. That said this HP laptop is a 14 inch laptop being in the middle of large and small laptops which is the sweet spot for me. The housing is termed snowflake white which actually reminds me of an older computer named after a fruit. At least it’s not in the usual black or silver. It is powered by the older Celeron 4500 chip which is not really fast enough for heavy computing. But still it is sufficient enough for general use. However it only comes with a measly 4GB of RAM which is not really that much and may hinder performance. Had it come with 8GB of RAM performance would much be better. Also, it comes with 64GB of eMMC. Again this is not the fastest. Like most computers of this class, these would not be expandable. Then again I surmise the target market of this computer is not really going for expansion options.
This computer comes with Windows 11 in S Mode. For those who are not familiar with S Mode, this is the version of Windows that only allows apps to be installed from the Windows store. This is done for security purposes. But for those who want to install apps outside the Windows store, there is a way to set the version of Windows to the regular version. This version is the Home version. And once you switch to the Home version, there is no way to revert back to S Mode. Lastly, this laptop includes an initial subscription of Microsoft 365. That alone is more than half the cost of this laptop. Do note this applies only to new users only.
Connectivity is fairly good for this class as it has two USB B ports. I am not sure if these are USB 3 compliant as there is no documentation regarding this and both do not have blue markings on the ports. It does have a USB C port which is new for me regarding this class of PC. And lastly, it does have an HDMI port and an SD card reader. Lastly battery power is fairly adequate since it has three cells which would last you between two to four hours. Your mileage may vary depending on use.
Overall this is a decent laptop for its price. Again this is not a fast machine but it has its target market. I’d still recommend this laptop.

JLab has been around for several years offering budget friendly audio products. I have owned several JLab earbuds previously. And one of earbuds was the Sports earbuds. This Epic Sport ANC 3 is an update of their previous Sport model.
Having the same form factor as the previous model there’s not much to discuss here. Again, the earbuds have hooks so that they’d stay put on your ears while doing workouts and they’d also be great using while on flights or long trips on a bus or train. Main noticeable difference though would be the built-in cable is now USB-C unlike the previous USB-A.
Internally, JLab included active noise cancelling and and High Res Audio with LDAC codec. Note that LDAC is only supported with Android not iOS. On paper these would be nice and JLab boasts that it’s the best sounding earbuds they have (save arguably for the Epic ANC 4). However, that probably ends there. As I have paired and put on the Sport ANC 3 earbuds, I was extremely disappointed with the sound quality. Perhaps, it was due to the wrong size of the rubber earpieces. I am a large so I then changed to the largest earpieces and did notice a slight improvement. I then proceeded to press the earbuds harder to my ears but again there was minimal difference. I then installed the app and used the settings and quite frankly I am not impressed. The sound profile simply lacked the warmth you’d expect from a decent pair of earbuds. Even when using the equalizer function did not give satisfactory results. To be honest, my entry level Jlab sounded better though I wouldn’t expect trailblazing audio, but my previous Jlab were entry level earbuds. The Epic Sport ANC 3 is one of the premium earbuds. And it is anything but what is promised. I’d stick to other Jlabs.

Environment friendly case

Pela cases have been around for quite some time. The Pela case for the iPhone 16 Plus is no different from previous versions. That said, what makes Pela unique is its environmental friendly materials used. Pela claims their cases are from plant based materials and not from oil based plastics as most cases are made from. Do note that I cannot say that this is biodegradable as the literature in the box or in its website. That said the Pela case has a solid rubber feel to it.
Another selling point of Pela cases is that they are designed and manufactured in North America – Canada to be more specific if that matters to you. And they are sold at a premium. And like its previous cases, these are form fitted for the iPhone 16 Plus.
One thing about Pela which makes is unique compared to others is that it offers you a second case for free wherein you can customize the second case. One thing to note is that while you can choose your own color, any text or picture uploaded entails a $10 fee. Given that it is already sold at a premium, they should have made this also a free feature. Aside from that I have no complaints against Pela. But if customization is a thing for you, the Pela case is highly recommended.

Screen protectors are nothing new. Insignia screen protectors are also nothing new. But why would one choose Insignia over others? First is the consistency. Having use different brands of screen protectors over several iPhones, Insignia for me has remained constant in quality, Often I have used a different brand and when it’s time to replace them, the next protector would have a slightly different quality whether it’s thickness or touch sensitivity. So this consistency is a plus for Insignia.
And though it is already becoming common, Insignia comes in a three pack obviously meaning you don’t have to scramble to buy another screen protector if your current gets broken. Another good thing about the Insignia brand is that their screen protectors come with an alignment tool. This is essentially a frame to make it easier to apply the screen protector to your phone. I need not elaborate that it can sometimes be frustrating to apply as screen protector to your phone. And often, a newbie would waste one or two protectors before getting it right. I know because I have been there.
So there it is, just grab a protector and I can vouch that this is a good brand. Highly recommended!

Great for small groups

Convection roasters have been around for decades. Often they were and are referred to as turbo broilers. These days they are now referred to as air fryers. But for those who have used these kitchen appliances back in the day, you would know that they are large and primarily caters to six or more people. The Ninja Crispi solves that problem as it caters to smaller families or groups.
The Ninja Crispi Crispi follows the design of the original turbo broiler where this is glass container and the heating element is on top unlike modern air fryers which often has a carafe design. The Crispi has two containers – one four quart and one six quart to cater to different sizes of groups. For the smaller container you just directly put on the heating element on top. As for the larger container, the Ninja Crispi has an adapter to fit the heating element. Also, the Crispi has to racks so that air can circulate under the food.
Operating the Ninja Crispi is pretty much straightforward. There are four self explaining heat settings namely recrisp, bake, air fry, and max crisp. Temperature ranges from 380-450F. However, I wish that the Crispi has the ability to provide exact temperatures. I have tried the recipes included in the documentation included, and somehow they don’t quite match up. The same also applies to the built-in timer as well. As such, using the Ninja Crispi is a trial and error for me.
Overall, the Crispi is a good air fryer for small groups or families. My only gripe is that heat control. But still, I would recommend this air fryer for small groups.

A simple yet robust monoaural headset

First, one may ask who Blue Parrot is. For those who are not familiar Blue Parrot, the brand is made by GN Audio which is also the manufacturer of the more famous Jabra audio which has the line of fine earbuds and headphones. Blue Parrot is more for GN Audio’s communication devices. That aside it’s time to review Blue Parrot’s B550-XT bluettoth headset.
Th B550-XT is pretty much your monoaural Bluetooth headset. It is not a slim type of headset but rather a can type single headset. Inside the box are the headset itself, two ear cushions – one foam and the other faux leather, a charging cable, and your usual quick start guides and warranty info.
Controls are very basic but then again your really don’t need fancy controls for this type of headset. You’ve got your power button, BT button and volume buttons. So what else do you need? But one thing that sets this apart is its noise cancelling feature. But then again one would ask why? And this is a single headset wherein your left ear can here everything around you. Well, the noise cancelling feature can come in handy. And since I live beside the freeway and there are lots of noises around, I’ve tested this in my backyard and made a few calls. While the normal audio is generally, the noise cancelling feature is a boost for sound clarity. It then dawned upon me that the most ideal use case for this headset would be for someone working in a busy office such as a call center where this could be very effective.
To add more functionality for the headset, it has companion app both for iOS and Android. It offers features such as ANC controls, battery checks, and even support for Push-to-Talk apps for Verizon and AT&T. I’m with T-Mobile so there’s no way for me to test that feature. It does work for Siri though so that’s good enough for me.
Lastly, the B550-XT boasts of a 24 run-time and range is 3X the normal BT range at 100 ft. So this overall is a simple yet powerful device. I would definitely recommend this headset.

The Heart Controller is one of Thrustmaster’s latest game controllers aimed at entry level users. So is this any good? Out of the box is the game controller itself, a USB-C to USB-A charging cable, and a few multi-language quick start guides. Upon taking it out, it is a bit smaller than other game controllers which is a plus for those with small hands. It has all the usual buttons found in most controllers. And upon testing the controllers, the buttons are clicky which is good. Also, there are two back buttons which gives its additional functionality and this is an uncommon feature in game controllers. It’s not groundbreaking as higher end controllers are having them already. Also, given that it has a USB-A cable it can be played in a variety of formats from PC to Xbox. One thing neat in this controller is that is has mic support and a headphone jack. Me and my son are casual gamers but we haven’t seen one that has mic support and a headphone jack. But perhaps there are other models out there already. Needless to say, this is a welcome feature.
Upon first use of this model, both my son and I found the controller not to be “grippy”. It is made from plastic which is a bit slippery to the touch. Other controllers either have a rubber/silicone coating or the plastic used has a “grippy”. Overall, the plastic used makes the build quality border on the “cheap” side. I also mentioned that the controls are responsive and has good latency. However the low rise joysticks for me make precise movements a bit more difficult. I wish this model has higher rise joy sticks.
Overall this unit is not bad but also neither that great. But then again, Thrustmaster does not tout this model as an advanced model but as an entry level one. The smaller size again may appeal to younger users who have smaller hands. So if you are in the market for a basic controller, the Thrustmaster Heart Controller is an option to consider.

Great on paper but needs work

The NextBase Piqo is part of Nextbase’s latest line of dashcams which I would lable as smart dashcams. I understand there are three variants of this line namely the full hd version, the 2k version and the 4k version. All function pretty much the same save for the resolution. The model I am reviewing is the 2k version.
Inside the box one can find the Piqo cam. Do note that the Piqo does not have a built-in screen. (More on that later) A USB C cable and dual car charger so you can also charge your phone will using the dashcam, an extra mounting plate, a cable pusher, cleaning cloths and safety stickers. And my unit also came in with a 32GB micro-sd card which is handy so that I wont buy an SD card anymore. However, I am not sure if the bundled SD card is standard or just a promotion considering the product is new.
Setup is easy. The inner box has QR codes to help you do the initial tasks which includes the downloading of the app and physically the dashcam. It’s really so simple. Mount the dashcam, insert the SD card, connect the cord to your charger and start the car. And like most dashcams, there is an optional kit available if you want to have it hardwired to your car. But that may need professional installation and may cost more than your dashcam. For me, it’s simply not worth it.
Upon doing the initial physical setup, the app will ask you to connect via Bluetooth. And in some cases, the app may further prompt you to a firmware upgrade immediately. My unit underwent a firmware upgrade immediately though you can always do a manual update. From thereon you can already enjoy the benefits of the Piqo dashcam.

The Piqo offers nifty features both paid and free in the such as high clarity (obvious), an emergency SOS, smart parking meaning it will start recording when there is bump in your but this is a common feature nowadays. You can also download videos to your phone via direct wi-fi.
Now here is my complaint with the Piqo, while on paper it is great I cannot get a live video feed from the Piqo using the app. As mentioned I’ve already updated the firmware but to no avail. And since it is new, support is still minimal. But perhaps there are compatibility problems with iOS. I have recently updated my phone to iOS 18. Who knows? Stange thing though is that it can record videos. And I can view them through the app. Whatever the cause it, it is not yet ready for prime time. That in mind, I would recommend that you wait for further firmware updates so that this issue can be fixed.

Great Premium Earbuds!

Sometime during 2023, Technics launched a pair of earbuds which would be their primary earbuds namely the AZ60M2 and its bigger sibling the AZ80. These two I believe are the follow up to the AZ60 and the AZ70 a few years back. And I find it quite odd that the AZ60 has a Mark 2 but the AZ70 has the AZ80 as its replacements. Nonetheless, this review will focus primarily focus on the AZ80 and with some reference to the AZ60M2.
First these two generally identical to each other. In fact I have both the AZ80 and AZ60M2. Thankfully my AZ80 is colored midnight blue and my AZ60M2 is colored black. But if you look closely at both, the AZ80’s mic and earpiece are angled more on a horizontal plane aligning with the Technics logo whereas the AZ60’s mic and earpiece are angled downwards. Perhaps that’s the most distinguishable difference between the two models aside from the gold Technics logo on top of the case so as to indicate that the AZ80 is the premium product.
Both models share similar features which are included in the app. Bothe models come with eight pairs of earpieces to accommodate various ear sizes. And within the app, there is a best earpiece fit which detects if there are sound leakages. Both models have the standard features of ANC earbuds namely control of ANC and ambient sound plus EQ presets as well as a custom eq. The earbuds are also touch control which can be adjusted through the app again a standard feature for most ANC earbuds. And both are built with premium quality plastic which does not either model feel cheap.
As for the sound quality, the AZ80 as well as the AZ60M2 support AAC and AptX. I do not have an Android device so I can only evaluate audio coming from an iPhone. I general the sound profile is conservative. And though it can be loud it does not raucous sound profile like that of Airpods (2nd gen) and some other earbuds. Instead, the sound is much cleaner or refined when used in loud volumes.
The AZ80 has larger driver obviously being the premium earbud compared to the AZ60M2. As mentioned earlier, the sound profile is very similar to each other. But one thing I have noticed is that the AZ80 still has clarity at full volume whereas the AZ60M2 has a little bit of distortion but barely noticeable.
In conclusion the AZ80 is the better model of the two obviously. But its younger sibling is not far behind. If you want to splurge, I would definitely recommend the AZ80.

Way better than the cheap ones out there!

Ok, the Apple Air Pods first and second generation have been around four years. And for most first adaptors, these Air Pods most likely have home juice left in them. But I wouldn’t be surprised that the charging case would have had a lot of beating in them and also most likely have stains which cannot be removed. And as much as one can love the Air Pods, a good redress to make it look decent would be of help. Now, here comes the Best Buy Essentials Air Pods Silicone Case for first and second generation models. These are nothing fancy and in fact similar to generic ones sold in that famous auction site or former online bookstore. It is simple a wraparound silicone case with a key ring. Nothing fancy save for the fact that it comes in various colors. What is notable with Best Buy’s case that it is thicker than the generic ones out there. And though these are still new, I am getting the impression that these will last long. To take things in perspective, I used to have one of those generic ones and the top lid already tore off after a few months. So, I would rather spend a bit more on these cases rather than going for cheaper one which I would have to change occasionally. So, I would recommend this case over the generic ones out there,

This is a fine camera in many ways, but after losing some photos and a conversation with Panasonic, I learned that you must use the included panasonic software to download photos. (I use Picasa.) That makes the camera less than 5 star, since iPhoto would have the same problem - so if you buy this, and it is a fine piece of equipment, use their photofun software to downloard

The wifi performance is good. However I found it odd that when I used fast.com to measure speed, the phone registered 20 mbps which by itself pretty good if you're using a phone. But since I ran it simultaneously with my pc, my pc had a 70 mbps. Also the processor is not bad. It is not the latest and is commonly found in low end or rather entry level android phones. If you want a better phone you might want to consider the POP 4S which is similar but has an octa-core processor at 1.8 GHz, 2GB RAM 13 mp camera with a fingerprint sensor at $170. This sells for $150. So the $20 dollar difference is worth it. But the Black Friday deal sells at $50. So I got this phone. :)

I wanted to like this phone. The specs were just fine. The screen was just fine. The only complaint I had was that the phone reboots frequently. Fresh off a factory reset, it would constantly reboot before I could even set it up. As a software engineer, I am disappointed that software like this can even be released. This is not the way to showcase a brand and the reason for many returns on otherwise perfectly fine hardware.

A lot of Alcatel models are like this including my Pop 4+. It seems that if you have a boot loop, let the phone rest for a few minutes then restart. do this even if you have wiped data. But this shouldn't happen at all especially for a new phone.

Alcatel uses older underpowered cpu which slows performance compared to currently available android marshmallow phones. Alcatel does support adoptive SD card storage unlike LG and Samsung. Dual sim is a plus. Needs better processor to be competitive.

as mentioned in the title, if you need a faster phone get the 4S. It has a 1.8Ghz processer and 2GB RAM. There are three POP 4 phones - POP 4/POP 4 Plus/POP 4S wherein the 4 Plus is the mid-tier POP 4 phone. But for $49.99 during Black Friday, why not?

The phone keeps restarting even though the battery has more than enough charge. I've tried a hard reset and that hasnt helped. A factory reset stopped the cycle and i managed to use the phone for like 20 minutes and the phone restarted. When we ordered the phone, we also ordered a case from a third party. At first we thought the case was pressing the power button because it was a tight fit but it didnt seem right. There was also an incident i had in the past with the one touch evolve that was exactly the same. I would like to hear back and now if this can be fix :) Have a nice Day!

After having the phone for less than 1 month, I took it on vacation where I didn't have service. On the way my phone started to restart randomly. When I arrived at my destination the phone started into a reboot loop. If I caught it booting up quick enough occasionally I could navigate for a couple minutes. Even after I was able to get wifi connected and any other setting I thought could affect it such as gps location disabled the phone continued into the reboot loop. After researching on many blogs and andriod q and a sites I couldn't find a helpful answer to remedy the issue. I reluctantly did a factory reset but the loop continued. Finally, after returning back home I attempted to use the phone and it returned to "normal". I am very dissatisfied and I am generally very easy to please. I will be looking for another device to replace this asap.

I also did the factory reset to ease the symptoms. But it seems to be the gps module as then random reboots often occur when I am in my car and mobile. Also when I use Yelp and try to get directions, the phone restarts. No problem when I'm home though.

I purchased this phone on black Friday because bestbuy was selling at $50, the phone had 2-yrs warranty, and Alcatel is one of the few good brands. I was excited about this purchase thinking that I paid only $50, but my excitement did vanish in a couple of days when I found that the phone restarts itself. After keeping an eye on the phone for a few days, I found that it restarts only when I drive or I am in a remote area. I googled about the issue and luckily found the reason behind restart. I am using T-mobile connection and had turned 4G LTE on. The 4G LTE service of T-mobile is not available in all areas of ABQ and therefore whenever I drove in areas where T-mobile signal was weak, phone used to restart. My phone never restarted in my school or in my house as T-mobile signal is excellent in these places. To fix the issue, I changed the network settings in my phone and set 3G as the default data service and after that it never restarted.
So, if any of you are facing restart issue, just stop using 4G LTE and use 3G. This solution worked for me. Hopefully it might work for you,too.
My finding is - this phone supports 4G only if the strength of the signal is excellent, otherwise, it restarts itself. But I don't know why doesn't it ,like other brands, work in case of bad signal. My friend has samsung phone and she never had the restart issue though we go to all the places together in the same car.
All other features of this phone are like samsung phone - my the most favorite brand. I haven't observed any other issue and the phone works like charm. Speed, sound quality (the default music player doesn't have equalizer, so you might try VLC music player), picture+video quality, and call quality are just superb. Finally I started loving this phone.
So, if any of you are facing restart issue, just stop using 4G LTE and use 3G. This solution worked for me. Hopefully it might work for you,too.

I called tech support and was informed that there is an issue with this phone. Alcatel promptly replaced my phone with newer firmware and presumably hardware and the problems of random reboots have gone.

Right now it's the Samsung HW-N950. It's a 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos/DTS-X system. I have the lower Samsung HW-N850 and a Bose 500. I have compared sounds and also read reviews of 2018 models. Right now the N950 is king.
