TP-LINK Smart Bulbs have improved and personalized our home lighting control, and given us peace of mind. Our lights are scheduled to automatically switch on at sunset so the family always returns to a welcoming and safe home. This is especially comforting when I am away on a business trip. After a few weeks of use, these lights have become integrated into our everyday lives. This is a review of a free demo unit received from TP-LINK for evaluation.
The LB130, is an intelligent, energy saving, 60-watt equivalent Smart LED Bulb that’s both Dimmable and Color Adjustable. It is Wi-Fi enabled and controllable from anywhere. With the LB130 it was easy to update my old house to a smart home, without replacing any fixtures or wiring. The LB130 was simple to set up and use. Installation involves screwing the LB130 into a standard light bulb socket and downloading a free Kasa App onto a phone or tablet (Android 4.1 or higher, Apple iOS 8 or higher). I added several TP-LINK Smart Bulbs in just a few minutes with the intuitive Kasa quick setup wizard. No hubs or any other hardware were required. Kasa also monitors energy use and indicates much the Smart Bulbs are saving.
LB130 Smart Bulbs connect by Wi-Fi to my Archer C5400 router. I can remotely control the bulbs from anywhere in my house using the Kasa App. I also control the bulbs, over the Internet, from my office across town or when traveling. Not only can these bulbs be turned On and Off, I also adjust brightness and color. Other good features are scheduling, automation, and energy savings.
LED’s reach full brightness with no warm-up time and last a very long time. The LB130 produces the same light (800 lumens) as a 60-watt incandescent bulb. However, the LB130 is more efficient, using only 11-watts at 100% brightness, and is rated for a 25,000 hour lifetime. That’s a 22.8 years lifespan at 3 hours/day use; it’s equivalent to 2.5 CFL bulbs or 25 60-watt incandescent bulbs.
In addition to convenience, this LED bulb is lowering my energy cost, saving me money. According to TP-LINK the LB130 has an estimated yearly energy cost of $1.32 (based on 3 hours/day and the US average of $0.11/kWh). A 60 watt incandescent light bulb that is similarly used costs $7.23/year. So the savings is $5.91/year. These estimates are conservative because in New York City, where I live, energy costs $0.187/kWh. My savings per year by switching to an LB130 are $10.05. The more hours an LB130 is used, the greater the savings.
The LB130 connects to any existing Wi-Fi network running 802.11n at 2.4GHz. A small Wi-Fi Module is imbedded within the base of the LB130. 802.11n is compatible with both new and legacy routers, and access points. 2.4GHz channels have a longer range than 5GHz. I have been using Smart Bulbs, in rooms far from my router, without any glitches.
We have tablets and phones distributed throughout the house, which we use to switch Smart Bulb lights On and Off, adjust brightness, and color. This works from anywhere in the house. It also works from anywhere in the world. At night, in my bedroom, I usually check my phone to see if any lights were accidentally left On. I can turn them Off with my phone. Smart Bulbs are also part of our security system. An LB130 is in my home office desk lamp. I just swapped out and replaced the previous incandescent light bulb. It is scheduled to automatically switch On at Sunset (@25% brightness) and Off at Sunrise. This helps us avoid walking in the dark accidents and discourages burglars. If we travel our Smart Bulbs are scheduled to simulate home activity.
When you initially power up a Smart Bulb it blinks three times to indicate that it is active. To Reset a bulb, turn the light switch that controls the bulb to Off. Turning the switch On and Off another three times Resets the bulb, while retaining the configuration settings. Cycling the switch On and Off five times Resets the bulb to its original factory defaults.
What is huge is that devices with Alexa technology allow us to control our lighting through voice commands. My mom is an old lady and in her apartment she uses Alexa voice control to control her Smart Bulb lights. Wow!
I would recommend this to a friend!
