A sci-fi film destined to become a classic in time
on April 14, 2013

Looper was one of the best movies of 2012. I know there are some complainers out there with some of the huge plot holes and time travel consistencies, but when has time travel ever been logical? This movie's concept is just brilliant, making time travel illegal and the only ones who use it are criminal organizations sending someone back in the past to get assassinated and there being no trace of the body for them to get convicted. But what if you are the assassin and the person that gets sent back is and older version of you? An original idea where originality is thrown out the window nowadays, that alone is worth giving this movie a look.
You get mostly everything with the Blu Ray extras, but would've liked a commentary with Bruce Willis included, and you get a whole thing of deleted scenes and a time travel science featurette which was pretty cool. Great picture and sound, a must own for movie enthusiasts.
Combine it with great acting from Willis and Gordon-Levitt, a killer score, great special effects, and a emotional climax, this movie is going to be looked at as a classic in later years, maybe even compared to Back To the Future one day (well, maybe not that close, but close)

What's great about it: Story, acting, special effects, and concept
What's not so great: a few plot holes, drags a bit in middle

One of the greatest horror films of all time
on April 14, 2013

Evil Dead 2 is one of the greatest horror films of all time. The first film didn't exactly know what it wanted to be, comedic or serious. This one said, why not combine both perfectly, and it did just that. This is the film that made Sam Raimi who he truly is today. And of course let's not forget Bruce Campbell, of which this made him a independent film and iconic screen star.
You want spooks? You get them here. Tired of all the new age horror film counting on CGI effects to try and horrify audience? All practical effects here to make everything look realistic, fun, and awe you all at once. What a satirical take on old horror films? You get 85 minutes worth. It's close to perfect as perfect that horror films could ever get. The only two complaints I would have about this film is the length, 85 min is much too short, I could've gone with 20 minutes of more mayhem, and that the plot is thin and the way that Raimi had to recap everything makes the film look more like a remake than a sequel, but due to copyright laws and which studios own which film, he couldn't help that. This movie is rewatchable as rewatchable can get. It never gets old.
With this 25 Year Anniversary Blu-Ray, you get the perfect set of special features anyone could ask for. Commentary with Bruce and Raimi, the journey to how they got there, interviews, a look on how they did all the makeup effects, and stopmotion, a look at how it became a cult-classic phenomenon, and more. Only thing missing is deleted scenes, and while I don't normally care about that, I think they would've been fun to watch here.
If you are wanting to see the new Evil Dead, and think it is only necessary to watch the first one, think again. you need to include this as well. A great horror movie buff buy.

Best Bond Film Ever, Excellent Blu-Ray
on April 14, 2013

Skyfall was one of the best films of 2012. And it is my favorite Bond film of all time, and yes, I have seen them all. It's just a perfect story, perfect pacing, perfect action, perfect acting, perfect villain, just perfect all around. Daniel Craig is the Best James Bond since Connery and if they do more Bond films like this he might even surpass him. I don't want to ruin any of the plot details but if you don't know much about this Bond adventure, the more fun you will have. It is just simply awe-inspiring.
Especially the cinematography by Roger Deakins. When you visit Shangai, you are in for a visual treat.
The Blu-Ray is about perfect, perfect picture and sound quality, sounded and looked excellent with my set up at home. DVD extras are great as well, everything you would like to know as a Bond enthusiast. Only thing missing are deleted scenes, which aren't that big a deal in the first place.
If you are a Bond fan or even an action film junkie such as myself, and don't want to be an action junkie that has to turn his brain off before watching the film, this is one of the perfect Blu-Rays you could ever treat yourself to.

Moving, sweeping film, good musical
on April 14, 2013

Les Miserables is a good musical. Memorable songs, emotional storyline and great acting by all of the cast (even Russell Crowe, there is nothing wrong with his character or the way he sings). You will be singing Master of the House in your sleep as well as the end song and Anne Hathaway's beautiful I Dreamed A Dream solo. Hugh Jackman shows he can do something beyond Broadway and Wolverine and the score is just brilliant.
If there are any complaints about this film, I feel that the shots and cinematoraphy are kind of short sighted. The shots don't seem epic and seem confined as if they are just on stage. When you are actually on stage doing a musical, this is a given, but when you are transforming a stage play into a cinematic feature, you need to go bigger. Just a little underwhelming but not overtly distracting.
For any person that love musicals, this is a must watch.
The Blu-Ray extras are pretty top notch. You get interviews from the cast, the history of Les Miserables, production design documentary, the works. This is what special features on films are made for. Only thing missing was maybe a stage to script comparison.
Overall, this is a must buy. And if you are a fan of steelbooks, don't let this one get away.

Fair game, only for true 007 fans

I don't think anything will beat N64s Goldeneye. The only thing that comes close is the Goldeneye released on the Wii a year and a half ago. 007 Legends tried to give it a good shot, but it ultimately delivers just a fair experience, with some moments that showed potential but also moments of utter frustration.
I like how they tied SKYFALL in with other Bond missions to try and make a sort of unique story, however anyone who hasn't watched those Bond films will be completely lost with why Bond is at these places in the first place. And the SKYFALL levels are short and very underwhelming.
The gameplay is fair at best, I beAt this in 3 days. One could go back and unlock the extras, but them mainly just being character bios its not worth it. The stealth missions are a joke, you can go in gung-Ho and still survive, and its pretty hard to die unless you are just standing there.
I wanted to try multiplayer, but no one is online to play so I couldn't test it out.
However true Bond fans may find it enjoyable for a limited run, but only for a halfway decent price.
A good rent though.
What's great about it: Bond missions you haven't played before, better than expected graphics
What's not so great: Game too short, weird controls, stealth useless, not challenging, SKYFALL missions underwhelming

Great classic sci-fi film not to be missed
on April 14, 2013

12 Monkeys is one of those classic sci fi films that are under appreciated but require a viewing. The tale, while bleak and dark are enhanced to a cinema masterpiece by Terry Gilliams directing, the wonderful visuals, and probably the best performances from Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt to date.
I also have the DVD copy to compare to the Blu that I just bought and if it proves anything it's that once you go Blu Ray, you can't go back. The picture is stunning and the sound out of my speaker system puts the DVD to shame, and the value for this under ten dollars right now makes this a truly wonderful buy.
The extras are still to be desired though, it does have a long documentary film length thing, but no deleted scenes or more interesting things, I see a Criterion Release someday with all the bells and whistles but this is a minor complaint for a great film.
This movie is a must buy.
