Ron Maxwell's civil war epic Gods and Generals comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. English, French, and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a scene-specific commentary track recorded by Maxwell as well as Civil War historians Keith Gibson and James I. Robertson Jr., a featurette on the realities of slave life during the time period of the film, a biography on General Stonewall Jackson, and a featurette on the painstaking historical accuracy of the film. A pair of music videos, one from Bob Dylan, and an introduction by Ted Turner rounds out this excellent package from Warner Bros. that is highly recommended to any Civil War enthusiast.

Disregard the AMG critic, unless you are a hater of American history. It is a long movie, no doubt, but last time I checked, so was the War of Northern Aggression.
What's great about it: Most of movie
What's not so great: Occasional lapses in acting, but not as bad as AMG critic says
