Infectious

When I first got War Psalms, I was disappointed with it's seeming simplicity. It was clean and polished, lacking the "epic" feel that made me almost instantly fall in love with Poets Were My Heroes. But then I kept listening, and those tight changes made the instrumentation stick out more than its predecessor, and ultimately that is what got stuck in my head. Lyrically you're looking at, well, less lyrics - but in this case I truly believe less is more. Ezra has proved that he can stand on his own without Stza and LOC.

A great way to sample the newer Fat roster
on January 21, 2015

Fat Wreck Chords put out some great comps in the '90s, but as digital music became more and more prevalent with the internet those releases came to a halt. Suddenly no one was interested in paying for a sampler when they could easily find the music for free online. So probably more for nostalgia than anything else, they release this: their first comp in the Fat Music series in several years. A few of the old bands are still with the label, but for the most part this serves as a way to prove that the label still has it, even if that means a slightly younger cleaner sound. I took off a star for the lack of exclusive tracks to this release - there are only a couple unavailable elsewhere. Regardless, Fat is personally my favorite punk label, and this is a great place to start if you're new to the label's output.

More recognizable songs, less cohesive of an album
on January 20, 2015

I got into NUFAN late in the game, just before Tony's death in fact, so my first listen to many of his albums were bittersweet knowing there would be no new music to follow. Going into More Betterness! I already knew over half of the songs, due to their greatest hits album, live album and compilation tracks. Most of those songs are great, and I was looking forward to hearing the rest. It's hard to say, but there is some filler here and the standout tracks are the ones available on other releases. I see this as the first album featuring a more mellow approach (which hits it's peak on their second to last album, Keep Them Confused) while trying to shake off the slightly heavier nature of its predecessors. Because of that, the album feels like it is searching to find its voice. Personally, I prefer the later direction of the band (Feel Good Record is my favorite) so it's still nice to see them begin to shape their sound. A solid effort.
