First, $300 is a lot of money. I thought long and hard about spending it on my Klipsch ear buds, and again before purchasing my Megaboom. I've had the Klipsch ear buds for a few years now, and every day I'm glad I bought them. I've had the Megaboom for only 2 days, but things are starting off the same way -- I'm glad I decided to buy it.
I agree with the description of the sound quality from almost all of the other reviewers. It's bass isn't as deep or as strong as the Klipsch KMC-1 I purchased (and returned), but it is still very satisfying. I don't think you'll be disappointed in the bass output at all. The mids and highs are clear and clean with a very open sound and a surprisingly large stereo sound stage. I've listened to rock, pop, singer/songwriter, country,a little rap and a little classical. I'm quite pleased overall with what I've heard from the Megaboom.
I also *really* like the extra features of this speaker -- it's extremely portable and suitcase-friendly (I travel a lot). I like the iOS app and the alarm feature. As a point of reference, I don't use any equalization on my iPhone, and I keep this unit set to "Standard", which seems to my ears to be identical to a flat custom EQ setting (all sliders at zero). It pairs easily with any of my Bluetooth devices, and it automatically re-pairs with the last device used.
If you can justify the expense, this is a great portable Bluetooth speaker.
Wirelessly stream your tunes with this Klipsch Music Center KMC 1 1016502 BL portable speaker that features Bluetooth and NFC (near-field communication) technologies for easy device pairing. The dual 2.5" full-range drivers produce powerful sound.
The best feature of the KMC-1 is terrific bass. It's clean, deep and loud without being boomy, even at high volumes. Vocal midrange is clear, but the upper mids sound muddy and weak, like they are trapped inside the plastic case of the unit and struggle to get out. The top end is nice and warm -- no harshness at all. I auditioned the speaker with a selection of rock, pop, singer/songwriter and rap songs, so I'm satisfied that I gave it a good workout.
The speaker's bass output varies widely when heard from different angles relative to the speaker. If your ears are above the unit, the bass is at its best, but if it is near ear level and heard from in front of the speaker, the bass loses a *lot* of its low end. I repeated this result from different rooms to make sure that it was a problem with the speaker and not the room acoustics.
I travel a lot, so having a speaker that is suitcase-friendly is a must. The KMC-1 is a bit too thick to comfortably fit in my suitcase. No problem with the width and height. Weight isn't really an issue, either -- I don't mind a little extra heft.
I returned this item and got an Ultimate Ears Megaboom instead. The portability, features and more open sound of the Megaboom made up for its higher cost (at Best Buy) and slightly less powerful bass.
At $268, the KMC-1 is a good value, and I definitely recommend it. It just wasn't the best fit for me, which is why I gave it 3 stars.
