It is about time that we get the Lord of the Rings trilogy released onto blu-ray. The picture quality is amazing, and so is the sound. This could vary from person to person based on your home theater set up, but I think that most people would be pleased with the quality of this release.
My complaints: I was disappointed that all of the extras were put on dvd instead of blu-ray. I think that this kind of takes away from the blu-ray experience. Like many other people who have reviewed this box set, I too am disappointed with the fact that the extended version of the films were not included. I personally own both the theatrical and the extended versions of this trilogy on dvd, and looks like I will have to hold out now and hope to get an extended version release on blu-ray later.
Overall if you are a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings franchise then this blu-ray box set is probably going to be right up your alley if you can over look the couple short comings in what should have been an awesome set.
I'm really glad that I did pre-order this box set and was able to snag one of the sweet steelbook cases for the box set.
What's great about it: Finally Lord of the Rings was released on blu-ray!
What's not so great: The extras are on DVD not Blu-ray, and the lack of the extended version
This blu-ray collection is awesome. You get both versions of the series, original & the remastered version. What is really neat about it tho, is that you can switch between the two versions on the fly to compare scenes if you want.
I can't recall if all of the extras are items that were all previously released on the two different dvd box sets that were released or not, but you do get a decent amount of extras.
If you are on the fence about getting the blu-ray box set, then I say go for it. It's Trek and it's blu-ray.
What's great about it: You get both versions of the series (original & remastered) in one collection.
It was great to see this classic released on blu-ray. I did not mind the cgi animation added to some of the scenes, and would not have minded if they entire film had been redone in the cgi.
If you are a fan of Masamune Shirow or Ghost in the Shell, then I would recommend this blu-ray to you.
My only complaint is that there really could have been more extras on this blu-ray edition.
