Not Hot

This dryer takes at least 90 minutes to dry a regular load. I will never buy another Whirlpool and can attest that Geek Squad is HORRIBLE to deal with and completely unhelpful. (At time of purchase I bought 5-year 'protection'). So obviously Best Buy has lost a formerly loyal customer too.

Keira Perfectly Cast
on September 14, 2013

Will Keira ever be better than in this? That's hard for me to imagine. She is so perfectly cast that I think her acting has been underrated. I know people who don't like this and I find that hard to fathom. It is highly stylized, sort of Moulin Rougey without the pop songs. If you don't like it there's something very wrong with you (Kidding, kind of....)

Doesn't Know Why He Likes It
on March 31, 2012

I'm no music critic. Frankly I don't know why I like this but I do so I'll share my thoughts. Brings to mind a healthier Amy Winehouse, maybe. Lana's very different from everyone I know and I like the fact that she doesn't seem like she's imminently going to self-destruct. No offense to Amy W and Whitney, but when I like someone I generally like em to stick around. It's still early in the year but I'm confident this will be one of my year's favorites. I'll be playing it for a very long time.
What's great about it: She's so deadpan

Sublime Road Album

The best Joni ever? That's arguable but many would agree it gets a serious shot. Mid-70s (Joni was about 30), it is uninterrupted poetry, her travel-themed turning-point look in both directions. One of the greatest artworks by a woman. I think it's fair to say her career never quite sustained the brilliance achieved in the 70s. She was "like Icarus ascending, on beautiful foolish arms" (from Amelia) "It was just a false alarm." Sad but heartening because it's so relentelessly good.
What's great about it: There's nothing that's not great about it.

Ultimate Almodovar Comedy
on March 31, 2012
Posted by: John786

Vivid, sensual and very funny, Almodovar seemingly lost interest in comedy shortly after this, but for this I am so gratedul. It bears his signature unmistakeably. My only criticism: the Shiite terrorist jokes don't really work anymore, in the US (or in Spain, for that matter). But apart from that this is unmitigated comedy genius. Of course the film is helped by strong acting throughout. Literally it never skips one beat. If you haven't seen it, you really must. Required. If you have a pulse you'll love it.
What's great about it: practically everything

Classy and Modern

I loved the Italian art film and was totally unfamiliar with American composer John Adams. Surprisingly, this music was not composed for the film. The director secured permission to use the music which was composed some years before. Certainly it is used brilliantly in the film. I figured it would stand up well on its own, and, I must say, I think I was right. It is entirely instrumental except for one track. If you have any interest in non-run-of-the-mill soundtracks, you would probably enjoy this CD.

A quick-witted loan shark (John Travolta) ends up in showbiz after pitching a script to a down-on-his-luck filmmaker (Gene Hackman) in this hilarious satire of Hollywood dysfunction from director Barry Sonnenfeld. Viewable in either the original 1.85:1 widescreen theatrical version or standard 1.33:1 full-screen pan-and-scan, and featuring a closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, this release also offers alternate Spanish Dolby Digital Surround and French Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks in addition to optional English, Spanish, and Korean subtitles. Extra features offer nothing more than a theatrical trailer.

Hilarious: The Stars Were Aligned for This
on September 20, 2010

Probably one of the best American comedies of the 90s. Great cast, in top form. Hilarious dialogue. I don't tend to laugh out loud during movies but this is just so wicked it's practically impossible not to. Is it mindless? Well, sort of. But, on the other hand, I bet it's not easy to make a movie this fun and timeless.

Ingmar Bergman's brilliant portrait of an elderly man coming to terms with age and mortality receives a simple but respectful presentation on this DVD from the Criterion Collection. Wild Strawberries has been transferred to disc in its original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, and the image quality is excellent, reproducing the nuances of Gunnar Fischer's camerawork with impressive accuracy. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono, and the fidelity is outstanding for a film shot in the mid-1950s. The dialogue is in Swedish, with optional English subtitles but no multiple language options. Beyond a short essay by Michael Koresky in the accompanying booklet, no bonus materials are included with this release. (This same disc has been included with a pair of box sets from Criterion, Essential Art House Vol. 1 and Essential Art House: Fifty Years of Janus Films, and the same transfer is available with a richer collection of bonus features in a deluxe edition from Criterion.) While this DVD doesn't offer much in the way of supplements, the presentation of one of Bergman's finest films is excellent, and is a fine value for budget-minded film enthusiasts.

A Masterpiece

I first saw this when attending a small liberal arts college. I know this sounds odd to say, but I believe it actually helped me grow up. Bergman's trademark search for honesty pervades it. The approach to serious issues is unflinching. Younger viewers today no doubt would find it slow and very low-tech. They might be better off starting with a Bergman film from the 70s. Also, the Essential Art House series has virtually no 'bonus' material. But this is a fine copy of a film that has passed, and will continue to pass, the test of time.

Favorite Foreign Film

Gave this film earlier to my nephew, to whom I think it seemed old-fashioned, but he remarked on the shifts between reality and dreams (one of the film's main points, in my opinion). Of course movie-making technology has changed a lot since 1963. But if you don't mind gorgeous black-and-white photography, this is unquestionably one of Fellini's best. Plot-wise, it's about a film director (played by Mastroianni) with some hits to his credit who is facing a sort of writer's block, feeling pressure, especially from intellectuals and critics. At the beginning he is experiencing sort of a breakdown. But the show, of course, must go on. So it is about the process of trying to create when having potentially debilitating self-doubt, coming to terms and sorting things out. Note: not many bonus features on this Essential Art House DVD, but the film stands beautifully on its own.

Great Voice, Balanced Collection
on March 8, 2010

This would be a fine intro to kd lang and it's also a nice compilation for those of us who already have a few of her albums. Her 2006 collection Reintarnation has some fun numbers but it's quirky and very countrified. The songs on Recollection are more representative of her career and the overall vibe is mellow. Play it, for example, when you're having brunch and people will notice it but not find it distracting. My favorite is Crying, her duet w/ Roy Orbison, probably the definitive cover version of that song. Followed by Cole Porter's sassy and sexy Love For Sale. CD1 has more of her own songs. So, the wide range here makes it a very good value.
What's great about it: The Voice and the Mellow Vibe
What's not so great: 2 slightly different versions of Leonard Cohen song: 1 would have been enough
