Deeply Addicting
on August 4, 2008

I've never played any of the previous Civilization installments but gave this one a try based on the demo. The game itself is incredible. The graphics are cartoonish and the "dialog" (which consists of nothing more than spoken jibberish whenever you highlight an action) is incessant and aggrivating, but the actual gameplay is very addictive. It is a turn-based strategy game and the basic premise is to dominate the world through technological advancement, cultural superiority, financial gain, or just plain brute force. The levels of difficulty range from too simple to nearly impossible and everything in between. The AI is fair for the most part except that as the difficulty rises, the computer tends to compensate for skill by giving itself unfair advantages, like expanding it's cities quicker than is normally possible. Also, the AI has the ability to demand money and technologies from you in exchange for peace while the player does not, something that will hopefully be addressed in a future patch.
For anyone that is a fan of strategy games, turn-based or even real time, this game is a must have.
What's great about it: Wide range of difficulty, lots of races
What's not so great: Certain AI actions

Stunning But Short
on May 5, 2008

Heavenly Sword is one of those games that you absolutely must try but probably don't want to own because it has low replay value, unless you're a collector. The graphics are amazing and are surpassed by the voice acting, something very rare in video games these days. The character's are all very unique and have matching personalities that complement them. Throughout the game there are portions that require you to shoot enemies either from a rocket launcher, cannon, or crossbow and after firing a projectile, if you hold the fire button down and tilt the controller the SIXAXIS controls kick in, gameplay goes into slow motion mode, and you can guide the projectile to its destination. This was honestly the most fun for me; there is a side character that you play through a few missions who only uses a crossbow-type contraption and the slow motion SIXAXIS feature to slay enemies, it's very God-like. The disappointing part of the game is that it is entirely too short; it took awhile to get used to the controls and combo moves but by the time I did, I was at the end already. Also, there are no freerange exploration options at all, it's all very linear and straight forward.
Ultimately, the characters are all fun and unique and the visuals are stunning, but the game is over very quickly. It's definately worth a look at the very least.
What's great about it: Great graphics, incredible voice acting, fun SIXAXIS implementation
What's not so great: Over too quickly, gameplay very linear

Beautiful Game
on April 1, 2008

Devil May Cry 4 continues to push the envelope for stunning visuals and smooth gameplay. The graphics are absolutely beautiful and the combo attacks are implemented so seamlessly that it feels like you are playing through a movie. The game is challenging but not impossible and the boss battles are each fun and unique in their own right. The main character, Nero, has a demonic arm that can perform a "buster" which, depending on the enemy, will perform a special devastating close range attack. Watching the different maneuvers the buster performs on each enemy is wildly entertaining, especially on the bosses. The only drawback is the same thing that has plagued the past DMC games: there is not a lot of replay value. Once you've beaten the game, you can go back through and try to beat all the secret missions, find the blue orb fragments, or just try and improve your score, but after awhile it gets monotonous just like every other Devil May Cry.
Devil May Cry 4 is visually stunning and the gameplay feels like you're watching a movie. Once you've finished the game it gets a bit boring, but it's definately worth going through at least once.
What's great about it: Incredible graphics, smooth gameplay, good cut-scenes
What's not so great: Not a whole lot of replay value

Extremely Fun

This game is visually stunning and the gameplay is very deep. There are lots of weapons to make it interesting. The voice acting is phenomenal and adds a lot to the realistic gameplay. The story mode is too abbreviated although very fun. The main draw to Call of Duty 4 is the online mode; at first, online play is very challenging as you start out with very few weapons and supplementary gear, but after accumulating points and earning more gear the playing fields become leveled.
The action is fast paced and the gameplay is intricate, Call of Duty 4 is a must buy for any PS3 owner.
What's great about it: Beautiful graphics, voice acting, competitive online play
What's not so great: Short story mode, tough online play in the beginning

Funniest Movie Ever
on February 29, 2008
Posted by: MattyHubastank
This movie has my vote for funniest movie of all time. I've watched it over 100 times easily. Jeff Bridges is brilliant as the misunderstood slacker and John Goodman steals the show as the overzealous war veteran. But the real star is John Turturro who only has a small part but is unforgetable as "Jesus," their bowling rival. This movie has even spurned a yearly festival in its honor: The Lebowski Fest held in Louisville, KY. If you don't own this movie, you are missing out.
What's great about it: Destined to be a classic
What's not so great: None

Very Real
on February 29, 2008

From the beginning, Apocalypto feels like you are watching a National Geographic special on ancient Indian cultures. The characters, makeup, and cinematography are all very authentic. The encounters are quite brutal but no more than in other movies. On the negative side, the storyline seems reproduced; it's a stereotypical movie plot and is actually unexpected in such an authentic looking movie. Worth watching at least once.
What's great about it: Very realistic
What's not so great: Typical movie storyline

Better Than Most
on February 18, 2008

I purchased this wireless router about nine months ago after trying and ultimately returning the Belkin equivalent, which gave me issues with its security controls. The Netgear wireless router was simple to set up and add a basic encryption and it's also one of the more inexpensive routers available. I have found since I've owned it that it has needed to be reset about once every two weeks which is more than normal. It's a minor hinderance and most routers will need to be reset occasionally.
If you need a basic wireless router to network through your home and don't feel like splurging the extra few dollars for a D-Link, the Netgear wireless router works great.
What's great about it: Aesthetically pleasing, does its job
What's not so great: Needs resetting more than it should

Extremely Dependable

Others have mentioned it, but these headphones are like the thoroughbreds of portable audio gear. I've had mine for about five years now and they are still going strong. Very clear sound, extremely durable, and the cord is the longest out of the basic headphones I've owned. They are not water resistant which I feel should be of more importance in modern headphones considering how many will use a set like these in strenuous, sweaty activity. Although, I've worn these through many workouts and many downpours and they still work like the first day I bought them. The only gripe I've encountered thus far are the behind-the-ear hooks which will dig into the ear after being worn for over an hour. It's not a major problem but it is the only reason I've shorted them one star. They are well worth the price and, honestly, will last longer than you actually WANT them to.
What's great about it: Great sound, durability, long cord
What's not so great: Slightly uncomfortable after extended periods

Nice sound, poor connectivity
on December 6, 2007
Posted by: MattyHubastank
Very easy setup, easy to use. Extremely handy wireless rear satellite speakers (should honestly become a staple in more surround systems.) iPod hookup is convenient as well as XM radio option, even though I drop it long ago for Sirius.
Unfortunately, the lack of inputs is enough for me to take this system back. Its not that the fact that it lacks an HDMI input, but that it lacks any sort of digital input WHATSOEVER, so there's no chance of letting other components take advantage of the surround sound. So unless you don't mind limiting the surround sound to just the DVD player, or are content with the single analog input then I'd find another setup.
What's great about it: wireless speakers, xm/ipod compatibility
What's not so great: NO digital audio inputs
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
