Scorpions' latest is a classic but modern sound

Scorpions CD "Humanity - Hour 1" is somewhat of a concept album about the state of the world, but each song could fit on any other album without wondering why it is there. That being said, this is a great CD that revisits some classic Scorpions moments in time. "Hour 1" starts off the set with a pounding drum and guitar intro, and lets you know this album is going to rock! "The Game of Life" is next and is sort of an "Alien Nation meets "Rock You Like a Hurricane" hybrid. "We Were Born to Fly" is a mid-tempo rocker that is a Scorpions trademark. "The Future Never Dies" is a ballad that seems to be a little over the top, but not a bad song overall. The rock returns on "You're Lovin' Me to Death" which has a great chorus, and then goes into the album's best song "321" a rocker that grabs you from the start and never lets up - a true Scorpions gem! Next is a touching ballad "Love Will Keep Us Alive", which shows Klaus Meine voice is still in top form. "We Will Rise Again, Your Last Song & Love is War" follow, and all are slick productions with a catchy chorus. "The Cross & Humanity " round out the album nicely, returning to a harder-edge sound. Even the bonus track "Cold", which is chilling song about war, is a winner. Desmond Child co-wrote the songs & produced, and his winning formula helped the Scorpions produce one of their best albums ever. Not quite a "Blackout or Love at First Sting", but just a notch below.
What's great about it: Classic Scorps Hard Rock, Great Vocals & Harmony throughout

Kiss' underrated hard rock masterpiece

After several years of toning down, and experimenting with everything from disco, pop & concept albums, KISS returned with an absolute, no holds barred Heavy Metal album that should been their return to the top of the hard rock mountain. Instead "Creatures of the Night' was one of their worst selling albums ever. Why? KISS fans had lost interest after the musical and member changes of the past few years (Ace Frehley & Peter Criss had both left the group). But this was a stellar performance that produced the heaviest sounding KISS album ever! The title track "Creatures of the Night" starts the album off, and is Paul Stanley classic anthem that lets you know that the boys are back! The album's single "I Love It Loud" may be Gene Simmons best, and sums up what both the album and KISS are really all about - Loud power-rock anthems! From there the heaviness continues with such standouts as "Killer, Rock and Roll Hell, Danger, and the thunderous War Machine" All delivering a knock-out power chord punch with some seriously heavy drumming provided by Eric Carr! The true gem however, may be the power ballad "I Still Love You". With emphasis on the "power" this is one of Paul Stanley's best vocal performances ever.
The Creatures album should rank up their with other KISS classics such as "Kiss, Destroyer & Love Gun", and is one that any KISS fan, as well as any heavy metal fan, should have in their collection.
What's great about it: Kiss at it's best - loud guitars & drums - killer songs!!!

Most complete album to date

The Offspring have created their most complete album ever. While there may not be a super catchy single such as "Come Out and Play, Gone Away or Pretty Fly", it is loaded with great songs from start to finish. All of the things that make The Offspring enjoyable are here - Punk/metal/ska riffs with their brand of socially comentary, along with some slower song mixed in to give this album a nice mix - all the while never losing their sense of humor! The best song on the album is the crushing "Hammerhead", but the other rockers are nearly just as good "Half-Truism, Trust in You, Rise and Fall', while the catchy "You're Gonna Go Far Kid" could be a single. Their views on today's world are present on songs "Takes Me Nowhere, Stuff is Messed Up & Nothingtown, which have some pretty humorous overtones to them. They get (as serious as they can) on the ballads "Kristy, Are You Doing Okay? & Fix You", which take on abuse & depression, but both songs provide a nice diversion from the rest of the album. Whether it was the production of Bob Rock, or The Offspring simply getting better with age, they produced their most enjoyable piece of work yet. Once you listen to it you will want to hear it again and again!
What's great about it: Good songs from start to finish

Lightning strikes again!!!

Dokken returns with their finest CD since the days of Tooth and Nail & Under Lock and Key. They re-visit the style that made them a premier melodic hard rock band in the 80's. Killer riffs, stong vocal harmonies and a powerful rhythm section. The CD starts off with the crushing "Standing on the Outside", and then goes into two instant classics "Give Me a Reason & Heart to Stone". Both of which would have been huge singles back in the day. The CD continues with "Disease" another rockin' tune that leads into two slower mid-tempo Dokken style ballads "How I Miss Your Smile & Oasis", which bring you back to the days of "In My Dreams & Alone Again". The rest of the CD continues to rock with "Point of No Return, This Fire, and the absolute killer "Judgement Day". Their are no fillers, just a great collection of songs to rock out to. This feels like the album that Dokken should have released after "Back for the Attack" (if the band had stayed together). This is a great CD full of 80's style riffs, but one that has a very modern sound to it as well. Lighting does indeed strike again!
What's great about it: Killer Dokken sound is back
