Classic Boston sound returns
on December 16, 2013

Boston's first two LPs are still staples of classic rock radio, and Tom Scholz has an unmistakably unique guitar tone. "More Than a Feeling" in particular demonstrates their strengths - soaring vocals and guitars that rocked out. Their third album, cleverly named "Third Stage," arrived almost a decade after their second, and though it was a relative disappointment, it did include a memorable lead single ("Amanda" went to #1 in the US) and a couple of smaller hits and was overall fairly enjoyable. In the interim, Scholz engineered and marketed effects boxes to reproduce his sound - The Rockman - that were fun to play with. I've only picked up one of the two albums that followed "Third Stage" and can't recall a thing about it other than that I didn't particularly like it. This sixth album finds Boston in better form than that one, with some solid hooks and that recognizable Scholz guitar sound, but nothing that sticks with you the way their earlier albums did. Brad Delp, the voice of Boston's earlier hits, has passed away, and the solution of using multiple lead vocalists takes away from the overall consistency of the album, leaving Scholz's guitar as the only unifying thread. If you're a Boston completist, you'll probably enjoy this CD, and I'm not sorry to have added it to my collection, but I wouldn't expect it to win the band new fans or add songs to their rotation on classic rock stations.

What's great about it: The guitars sound just like Tom Scholz's guitars are supposed to sound
What's not so great: No songs as good as their classic hits

Neko Case is a powerhouse vocalist who delivers a solid, honest set of songs every time, whether recorded or live. Although her early albums treaded toward country, the more recent ones like this are in a nether-region of their own. I don't know what to call it, all I can say is that it's identifiably Neko. Though it's true to say that many of the songs feature "atmospheric backgrounds" and that Neko's voice often sounds "etherial," that would give the impression that she sounds like Enya, which isn't the case at all. More lil Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship), but with a gentler side, too. This Deluxe Edition gets you nicer packaging and (more importantly) a handful of bonus tracks, including a cover of Robyn Hitchcock's "Madonna of the Wasps" that's as delightful as it is unexpected.

A Nice Surprise From a Newer Band

I'd heard a track from this CD on the local college radio station and added it to my order on a whim. Sure glad I did. Acoustic instruments back solid songs delivered with passion. In a similar wheelhouse to Mumford and Sons and the Avett Brothers, but for my money they're more consistent than Mumford and more willing to stretch outside the acoustic band box than either of the others, usually to great effect. Worth the risk, and I definitely want to hear more.

Will Sheff and the gang turn in a set of songs that fits nicely beside 2007's The Stage Names and 2008's The Stand-Ins, including standout track "Down the Deep River." Catch them live if you get a chance; they put on an engaging, emotional performance every time.

A return to form

I fell in love easily with Schneider's 2001 release "Lonelyland," with its excellent songs and audacious arrangements. I've been picking up the followups ever since, and they never quite measured up. There were highs and lows, and the last one nearly had me convinced that "Lonelyland" was a fluke that couldn't be repeated. Well, I'm glad I came back for one more try because "Burden of Proof" shows that Schneider is still capable of reaching those highs, and that he still has some great albums in him. Glad I didn't stop believing.

Isbell's best yet

Jason Isbell, once a member of the Drive-by Truckers, has been releasing solo albums for the past several years, and though they've always been good, this one is exceptional. Isbell delves into emotional matters fearlessly, never losing sight of the melodic tendencies that he's always had. A solid Americana-style offering from a rising voice. Recommended!

Disappointment from a usually reliable songwriter

I've loved Ben Lee since I heard a preview copy of his first solo CD over the speakers of my local music store. He's a strong songwriter with a penchant for memorable melodies, well-constructed lyrics, and solid production. And his releases have reliably ranged from good to excellent, often making my list of favorites for the year they're released. I dipped back and picked up what I could of his previous project, Noise Addict, too, and found it to be similarly enjoyable.
Well, the bad news is that Ben has found ayahuasca, an herb with medicinal qualities, and used it to go on a healing journey. The worse news is that the experience is what this album is all about, and it has influenced the writing and production across the board. What minimal lyrical content there is here is akin to the repetitive chants that you might expect to hear in ceremonies like those that Lee expounds upon in his liner notes. A couple of the sung melodies do stick with you, but the bulk of the hour-long experience is a wash of the vaguely acoustic stuff you usually hear on New Age recordings. There's not much substance here - which is almost ironic given that it's about a substance.
If you're a Lee fan like I am, you might find a small amount to hold onto here. If you're not, don't start here unless New Age is your thing. Or you've sampled ayahuasca yourself and are more likely to appreciate The Work. I'm hoping that his next CD is back to the classic Ben Lee mold. Because there was absolutely nothing wrong with what he was doing before. And if not - if this marks a career turn - well, he'll drop off my "must buy" list, and I'll still be able to enjoy everything that preceded this one.

He's a Good Dog

This is a collection of a TV show that was aimed squarely at a younger audience, but it's fun if you're willing to take it not-so-seriously. The K-9 character was introduced in the Tom Baker (4th Doctor) era of Doctor Who and reappeared more recently with David Tennant's 10th Doctor and briefly in the Elisabeth Sladen-led direct spin-off called Sarah Jane Adventures. K-9 appears briefly in his older, boxy look but almost immediately regenerates into a more aerodynamic CGI version that's able to do much more than the classic K-9 ever could. He's still voiced by John Leeson, and surrounded by a cast of relative newcomers. The Australian production has higher production values than classic Doctor Who, but not by much at times. The scripts can degenerate into cheese at times, but by and large the whole venture was made with loving care by people who clearly want the best for their tin dog and his allies. And though it'll never have a chance of entering anyone's top-10 (or even top-100) list of best series of all time, it's good, solid, semi-nostalgic entertainment, particularly for the younger set.
