Yonkers Joe as a DVD succeeds further than the movie did in the theaters. After seeing it in both forms, I can appreciate the ability to re-watch scenes of interest, which for me centered on the dice trick scenes. I could slow down the frames and see that the tricks were indeed real. Later on, I saw there were detailed scenes in the Extras of the DVD that showed exactly how the moves were performed! This was an unexpected surprise.
The plot itself seemed to drag on a bit too long, but I felt the director did a splendid job with the script for his first feature film. I thought the choice to use the old downtown Vegas for the finale was a better choice than a newer casino. I associate the character of Yonkers Joe with vintage Sin City- gritty, old-fashioned, true hustler in all regards. This added touch made the movie more realistic to me and kept my attention when it mattered most. Check this flick out for a down-to-earth, entertaining plot without any computerized special effects.
What's great about it: DVD Extras are true extras, not just junk that is typically cut from a movie for a good reason.
What's not so great: I enjoyed everything, though everyone is different.
