Chaplin's most controversial film on Criterion
on April 15, 2013

Chaplin is back, but this time he isn't playing the his classic character. This time he is a modern Bluebeard murdering women for their money so that he can support his family. Chaplin and his cast are great in this misunderstood and rejected film. Over the years, it has been re-evaluated as the masterpiece it is and now The Criterion Collection has released it as part of their esteemed collection. Highly Recommended.

One of the Farrelly Brothers best films
on April 15, 2013

There's Something About Mary is one of the best films by the Farrelly Brothers, probably their last really good one. It mixes up crude humor with loads of heart in the tale of an underdog chasing the girl that got away. The Blu-ray is a mixed affair though probably the best way to view the film. It has a decent transfer and sound. The extras aren't very enlightening, but really it's all about the film which is great. Worth a look.

What's great about it: Very funny. Dirty with a heart.
What's not so great: A bit overplayed at this point

Vince Vaughan leads his band of misfits to victory

Vince Vaughan owns Average Joe's gym, a down and out place for regular folks to get in shape. Ben Stiller, his lifelong rival, runs Globogym, the corporate, image destroying gym next door. What follows is the convoluted tale of how the Joe's fight back to save their gym through some adult Dodgeball action. Hilarious and worth a look.

A blast and one of Jack Black's best films!
on April 15, 2013

Jack Black takes to the stage in one of his funniest films. Here he plays Dewey Finn, slacker and wannabe rock star who through a number of contrivances, ends up as a substitute teacher for a very posh school. He inspires the kids to rock and what you end up with is a legitimate good time.
Recommended.

What's great about it: Hilarious, heartfelt, the kids are great!
What's not so great: Some thin characterizations

Classic 1980s comedy hits blu-ray!
on April 15, 2013

If you liked the late Rodney Dangerfield, you will love this 1986 film. No doubt Rodney had a hand in the screenplay. There is so much of his schtick here, but he makes it work. Basically he decides to go to college with his son to dissuade the son from dropping out. He plays his Rodney persona, here named Thornton Melon, a tall and fat clothing tycoon. The characters tend to be stererotypical and sometimes caricature, but done deliberately to make you like or hate them as Rodney wishes. But it has some laugh filled sequences and good special effects, as Thornton performs his very difficult Triple Lindy dive. Good supporting cast includes Sally Kellerman, Ned Beatty and a young Robert Downey, Jr. Remove a star if you are not a Dangerfield fan. But if you are, this is fun and good escapist entertainment.

Wackiness ensues with these bumbling cops
on April 15, 2013

Super Troopers is about a group of Vermont State Troopers, led by Capt. John O'Hagen (Brian Cox) whose department is in danger of shutting down. The governor (Lynda Carter) doesn't have a big budget to spend on police work, and the more professional local cops, lead by Chief Bruce Grady (Daniel von Bargen), are the more likely candidates to get the money in the upcoming budget overhaul. And, to the casual observor, it would be the right choice. The state cops have a tendancy to play games with the people they pull over; one game involves one cop repeating everything his partner says, while another has one of the troopers saying "meow" instead of "now" in an attempt to drive the pulled-over motorist crazy. And when dealing with stoned teens, they really have a blast. While officers Ramathorne (Jay Chandrasekhar), Foster (Paul Soter), Mac (Steve Lemme), and "Rabbit" Roto (Erik Stolhanske) do everything in good humor, the force's black sheep, Officer Rodney Farva (Kevin Heffernan) tends to go too far and get himself suspended and give the department a bad name (he jumped a fast food clerk for messing with him).
But when a murder on the highway is connected with a drug ring, the Super Troopers find a way to redeem themselves and get back in the governor's good graces- as long as the meddling local cops don't solve the case first.
This film is hilarious and it's sheer wackiness is what makes it great. There is crude humor, drug-based humor, some nudity, and gratuitous use of the f-word so buyer beware.

Horror movie cliches get the axe
on April 15, 2013

Cabin In The Woods is the latest collaboration between Joss Whedon of Avengers and Buffy The Vampire Slayer fame and Drew Goddard, writer of Buffy and Cloverfield. The film plays as a straight horror film, but at the same time is suffused with smart parodies of the horror conventions we all know and love. Very intelligently made, the film is a gem and recommended to all horror lovers. The blu--ray is well put together and includes an in depth conversation with the creators. Recommended.

For a non-anamorphic picture (widescreen letterbox, 1.85:1 aspect ratio), the picture quality of Office Space is fairly sharp and smooth with rather detailed-looking events, faces, and scenes. Audio options on this single-layered DVD include English Dolby Digital 5.1, English Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround, and French Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround, with optional subtitles available in English and Spanish. Closed-captioning is also included. Bonus or special features are not, however, except for the original theatrical trailers. The sound quality comes through as mono sounding and front-directed, with overly loud dialogue in places throughout the film; coloring is a bit splotchy and inconsistent in some scenes.

Hilarious Comedy for any office work
on April 15, 2013

For anyone who hasn't seen Office Space, you really should make it a priority. The film is an absurdist look at office life and is relatable to pretty much everyone. It chronicles the misadventures of 3 friends fed up with the bureaucracies of holding down a job and how they break free from them. The film has become a modern classic and this blu-ray is the best way to experience the film. Recommended.
