I was using the Netgear wndr3700v2 for over 2 years, I had at least 8-10 wireless devices attached, along with my 3 gaming consoles and desktop computer (also was using a Netgear extender that was connected to the router). That router was a workhorse and it served me the best that it could do for it's time that worked. Then a few weeks ago the router started to drop signals constantly, I knew it was time for a new router. I did a lot of research before purchasing this router; after all it is a 300$ purchase! I looked at Linksys, Asus, Belkin, etc. and saw what they had to offer. I purchased the Netgear R8000 first from Staples (Best Buy stores don't have it in stock) and I loved it - no issues whatsoever with it. Then, I read about the ASUS RT-AC87R and it's impressive hardware specs that it had. I returned my Netgear R8000 to Staples and bought the ASUS from Best Buy. I installed it and it ran good, speeds where the same, coverage around 4+ bedroom house at farthest locations were about the same. However, the signal tended to drop a few times throughout the day - I researched this issue among other forums and had found that ASUS's firmware for this router was very buggy, the hardware of the ASUS was not the issue but the firmware was. I then went on BestBuy.com and ordered the Netgear R8000, I picked it up today and returned the ASUS. Also I would like to point out, the newer ASUS router (one that I had) and future newer ones will use MU-MIMO technology - it is an awesome piece of hardware to have in your router as long as your current wireless device supports it, almost no current device on the market supports this yet.
Setup was very easy for the router, took less then 20 minutes to open the box, setup the SSID and the passwords for 3 different bands that is supported by the router; also with the firmware update that it had. Design is the only thing that could have been just a tad bit better but that's only superficial and the most opinionated thing that I have to say about this piece of networking hardware. One awesome thing about this router is that it has an on/off for the LED lights - which is handy if you put this router in your bedroom and do not want to see flickering lights before you go to sleep.
Reliability, speed, range, etc. I used this router to download large 2+ gb files on my desktop while streaming to a video box, while having 2 laptops, 2 tablets, 3 smartphones connected to it. It performed terrific with everything connected to it simultaneously.
I am very happy with the R8000 and I would recommend to anyone
