Ridiculously over-engineered? Or the perfect case for your iPad 2 no matter where you're headed? We think it's a little bit of both. Simply put, the Griffin Survivor Case is the most protective case we've ever built.Tested and certified to meet or exceed US Department of Defense Standard 810F, Griffin's Survivor Extreme-Duty Case is designed from the inside out to protect your iPad from extreme conditions ... dirt, sand, rain, shock, vibration, and a host of other environmental factors. This durable case is designed to help protect your iPad 2nd-, 3rd- or 4th-generation against shock, drops, rain, dust and wind. The shatter-resistant polycarbonate frame is clad in shock-absorbing silicone to keep your device safe.

Sense of security

First the frivolous: I ordered the pink version which looks surprisingly good (no aura of Barbie). A few more color options (purple, saddle, red, orange) would be nice. If only two choices were to be available I think this pink was a good choice as it looks great with either the white or black iPad. My iPad is black so a black cover would have been boring.
Now to the important stuff. The Survivor is the perfect case for me. The sturdiness and pleasant-feeling, non-slip texture make the sleek and slippery iPad 2 feel nice and secure in my hands and I feel comfortable taking it to the park or out in my half acre yard with my rambunctious dog pack.
A few of the port covers seem a little flimsy/floppy but don't appear to be wearing or tearing at all. I have no problem with the cover for the speaker. When watching videos a person tends to have their particular preferred grip and it was simple to just tuck the open flap under my usual grip spot for my right hand, then after using my right hand on the screen to just automatically graze the open flap, brushing it back in place under my grip to watch the next video.
The stand when not in use clips nicely to the Survivor case, not even obviously looking like anything other that a bit of contrasting detail on the pink case and totally unnoticeable on the black Survivor case. It adds that bit more of sturdiness and a convenient extra spot to grip. It works great in landscape for typing, even on my bed. It's also very sturdy and stable as a landscape video stand. I don't use it in portrait configuration so I can't speak to that.
As far as the port covers I'd feel safe taking it out in the rain and wind and dust but I don't think they'd work if you dropped the device overboard unless you got it out pretty quickly then let it air dry.
Putting the case on takes a bit of effort especially the inner hard case which is clamped into the outer case so securely when you pull the Survivor out of the package, that I was afraid of breaking it with the force necessary to get it out. While fitting the two pieces, front and back, of the hard frame around the iPad it seems every time you get one side fastened the other side pops open but once it's in there you have no worries about it staying in there.
Putting on the soft, clingy outer case is much quicker and there are little rubber tabs that fit into slots on the inner case so it lays tightly and smoothly. The trick being you have to realize those tabs are there and insert them securely in the slots, otherwise they just leave unsightly bumps. Once in place you can barely feel the edges where the outer case lays over the inner case. It all fits so tightly I forget the black I'm seeing is the Griffin Survivor's inner protective shell and not the Pad and all with no signs of any overheating.
Re: the 'directions' if that's what that little scrap of paper is with writing so tiny it wasn't even worth hunting for the magnifying glass. That paper might as well have been left out. How are you going to assemble something if you have to keep putting it down and picking up the magnifying glass to scrutinize the mystery paper?
The built in screen protector doesn't cause any glare but it does darken the screen a bit, however I also have a non-glare, fingerprint resistant ZAGG screen protector installed. If you only have the Survivor's protector I don't see it being a problem.
The price is steep but it's worth the money. I did a lot of research and hands on comparison and the Griffin Survivor iPad case is the best out there that I've seen. It makes me feel my expensive toy is safe and secure from everything the world is likely to throw at it (except the Rottweiler thinking it's a chew toy, though it will probably give you enough time to realize what's going on and save the iPad if not the aesthetics of the case).
What's great about it: Sturdy. Looks good. Tight fit. Lighter than some much less protective cases.
I would recommend this to a friend!
