Engrossed by the Darkness

"Darkness, you afraid? I'm not, . . . the dark is afraid of me."
This statement made by Riddick(performed so eloquently by Vin Diesel himself) later in the game sums up the gritty, dark mood of one of the XBox's and Playstation's greatest titles.
Being a gamer for nearly 2 decades now I can rightly state that most film related game titles are either horribly programmed or "campy" at best. Vivendi Universal along with Vin Diesel's own Tigon Studios broke the mold here. This collaboration of storyline, theme, game design, gameplay, and voice-over talent is outstanding. Not only does this game add to a film-based universe in beautifully rendered graphics and, perhaps, some of the best lighting in a game; but the player is completely immersed in it. As you play it is not hard at all to take in the gritty nature of Butcher Bay. You can practically 'smell' the garbage discarded around trash cans. You can even nearly 'feel' the bones snapping or the pierced flesh as you stealthilly dispose of your assailants.
This game takes the classic First Person shooter and turns it on it's ear adding unique hand-to-hand combat and strategy. I highly recommend this game to any FPS fan. It will sneak up on you and before you know it you'll be grinning with glee to the tune of Riddick's gutteral threats.
*HOWEVER, I must note that this game is definately not for children. It bears a MA rating and VERY rightly so. So, we need not have any 9 year olds pouncing out of the shadows on thier unsuspecting siblings now.

What Sci-Fi Fantasies are Made Of
on September 8, 2016

Granted you may be like me,a consumer exhausted by hollywood media conglomerates shoving down your throats whom you are to spend your money for-a "Who's hot" if you will. Much is the case of The Chronicles of Riddick star Vin Diesel. Sadly for him and unfortunate for you, if this fits your view of him, but this film is grossly underrated. It is a truly well developed film. (As far as Sci-Fi's go) If you think back to some of the classic otherworldly Sci-Fi film's such as The Planet of the Apes, Aliens, Blade Runner, the Star Wars saga-all of these films take the audience to their world. A world full of their own genre, style, socialogy not alike to our own, yet not too far off either. (Granted some better than others) The film is full of rich characters, planetary races, war-mongers, and ethereal beings. It is a tapestry of classic fantasy noir. And out of the films I mentioned above TCOR mimics the mythos that the Star Wars saga holds. It represents the 'coming of age' or growing into 'destiny' that truly great fantasy films capture. I personally believe people have become too serious with themselves to allow themselves to immerse in the different worlds a film like this introduces.
Keep in mind that I do believe that the film should have ventured for the 'R' rating and had left some of the more "intense" battle sequences, as the MPAA put it, in and pushed the Riddick universe to the limits. Unfortunately a PG-13 rating somewhat "hammed-up" the credibility of TCOR, but I do hope that the Unrated version on the DVD measures up to this potentially fantastic universe paving the way for perhaps the future 2 chapters in the Riddick chronology.

Gleeful Cackles While I Electrocute, Incinerate an
on August 19, 2016

Being an devout 'RPG'er I (like so many other Xbox owners) was completely thrilled at the fact that 'ole Mr. Gates' console is finally getting a bonafide RPG to add to it's repertoire. For all fans of role-playing games this was to be the end all, be all game of games for the RPG genre. And we so patiently waited for the grand "Fable" to arrive and entrance our minds for nearly 4 years now. This game has garnered much discussion and anticipation from the "underground" gamers abroad. All bets were off, this game was to revolutionize the way RPG's were to be programmed and played just as Final Fantasy VII had done to the genre in '97. Did it? Was Microsoft able to pull it off and alter the future of RPG's? Was it as great as anticipated or was it a huge dissapointment and a waste of time and money?
Well, according to the various forums, chat rooms, and reviews of it Fable is all of the above-It is both fabulous and a failure.
I personally can not honestly say that Lionshead Studio managed to reinvent the way RPG's are to be played, but I must say that the freedom in this game is grander than what I have experienced in all other RPG's to date. The premise that you start off as a young child (propably around 6-7 yrs. old) and age along with the story line as you progress in experience (all the way to senior citizenship) definately makes it easier to immerse yourself into the game. I have laughed to myself many a time now at how outright inpropable, and yet impowering, it is for a 65 year old man to manage to have women (and men alike) fall madly in love with his elderly "hero" self. The beauty of this game is that impowering impropability. Yes, I know all RPG's are games of donning someother reality, but still most of them still do not reach the depth of total control over your character as Fable has managed to do. The control over the Hero's appearance from hairstyles to facial hair is rare. Then add into it clothing, weapon of choice to wield, powers/attributes/abilities, moral/ethical choices, even sexuallity-heterosexual, gay, bi? It is all up to the player and however he or she may want to take it and then RUN with it! These types of decisions enable a deeper sense of connection with the character-shallow they may be, but they allow more control over character development than any other RPG that I have yet to play.
Unfortunately however the storyline is still rather linear AND VERY short. I completed the game in under 9 hours. The limitation in the length of the main story does not restrict freedom to "wander around" though. My latest replay of the game I have managed to strecth my 9 hour game to a 19 hour game and I am not even 2/3 done with it yet. So, Fable permits plenty of "filler" time (if you will) to make the game experience that more unique and personal to the gamer and the gamer's intentions during a run through. For example, if I want to be wickedly evil I can do so and still complete the game at my own pace hacking and slashing townsfolk, robbing them in the middle of night, or even killing them in thier sleep. Or another day I feel like being noble, virtous, pure and full of integrity so I defend my fellow man as he is attacked by a raid of bandits or trolls earning holiness. Then again another day I want the best of being both morally good and sinfully, immorally bad. And this where the twisted fun can really happen, because the gamer now has the opportunity to save his/her fellow man once again from the dreaded bandits and immediately following the now rescued person's gracious, flattering remarks YOU can now strike them dead, thus balancing out the games moral meter.
*Rescued Trader-"Thank you, kind sir. Hooray for the mighty (hero's title)!!"
*Hero-In response to the traders compliments and adoration you smash his face in with your (weapon of choice) thus killing him immediately.
Note: As I'm writing this review I realize that it may read quite disturbing that someone would find such a scenario enjoyable . . . well trust me IT IS.
All in all the heart of Fable is not the storyline nor the gameplay, which by the way is superb and quite easy to grasp almost immediately, but in the honest moral choices it asks the player to make. Nobility is honorable and gratifying, but let's all be honest here it's FUN to be bad. And having a game to explore some of these completely uncivilized decisions can be rather well . . . entertaining. I must add though that these moral decisions should be left to more socially/emotionally mature minds with enough reason to understand right and wrong, cause and effect. Fable should not be played by children who do not yet grasp the understanding of appreciation for life. In fact this statement should not even be neccessary, because the game itself is rated mature (17+), therefore these moral/ethical questions should not reach the minds of children nor young teens.
Fable is just that-a complete and total farce made up of whatever you choose it to be. Good, bad, indifferent the choice is yours. So why not have fun with it, because that's what RPG's are really about right? Making your 'own' Fable?
As far as whether or not one should own Fable, I recommend renting it for the average gamer and owning it for every RPG fan.

Knuckles Still White with the Remaster

Whew . . . Gears of War may be one of the most visceral, intense near-FPS on the market. I state that the game is "near-FPS" because, if you are not aware, the game is played from an over-the-shoulder third person view much like the POV from Resident Evil 4. And I must say that it fits this style of gameplay perfectly.
Throughout the game heart-skipping moments abound. The fighting is non-stop and insanely intense. The game designers at Epic were ingenious with their implementation of their duck-and-cover design. You CAN NOT survive a moment without it. And this focus on cover adds to the authenticity of the game's world, Sera.
Add on top of this the GORGEOUS graphics, brought to you by the Unreal Engine 3, and you are immediately one with the world and its culture. On a low-note though I must admit that the dialogue, although well executed by the voice actors, is regrettably CHEEEEZZE. I almost have to remind myself that I'm not watching an Arnold or Sly over-the-top action film from the '80s filled with all their wonderful one-liners. However, this is hardly anything more than a slight "groaner" moment and should definitely not affect one's decision on whether or not to get this game.
And of course this is an M-rated game, therefore definately NOT for children.

A Book Worth Reading err...Film Worth Watching
on August 19, 2016

Admittedly going sitting down to see the film for the first time I did not expect much. By golly, I was most pleasantly surprised.
The film is visually beyond beautiful. The style and genre reflect the latin culture of "Dia De Los Muertos" vividly. The colors, effects and visual directions are wonderfully magical.
Add on top of this the fantastic story and artful music selection (almost entirely done through musical sequences) and you have a timeless and outstanding tale.

Superhero Teambuilding & Division At its Best
on July 18, 2016

NOW, this is proof that film-makers and film companies can actually make outstanding Superhero films. (In contrast to the horrendous-blasphemy that is BVS)
The film introduces new characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) all the while adding even more depth to the characters we know and love already. The pacing of the film permits us to learn of and (more importantly) feel the motivation of these characters.
The Superheros are placed in a new position of control and the question of whom holds that control. Do the heroes register and submit under Government control or do they remain "rogue" and free to choose how they act?
The beauty is that this film actually gives the audience ample reason to reflect and come to their own conclusion and belief in what is "right". Even if you go into the film with your mind set on either "for" or "against" the idea or Superhero registration the film causes you to question whether or not that truly is the best course of action. These questions are very "grown up" and "adult" which is hard to do in a film without emptying all the "fun" out of it. (I'm looking at you, BVS)
HOWEVER, this film manages to address those very adult questions and maintain the "fun" and excitement of a Marvel Superhero film. (GREAT JOB, MCU)
I recommend you do a little bit of back story research so that you may have your own view on the matter and trust me that by the end of the film you will be questioning everything. :)
Enjoy it. I know you will.

Deadset on Target for Deathly Dead-Pan Laughs!
on June 24, 2016
Posted by: CJHansolo
I don't even know where to begin nor how to categorize this outstanding film!?! It's simply incredibly refreshing.
Ryan Reynold has (in his most natural way and ease) crafted a comedy film with the most blood, gore and body-count to date. I most feel that DeadPool is more a comedy than anything else due to my side-splitting laughter throughout 98% of the film.
HOWEVER, that remaining 2% is OUTSTANDING. It's a drama/romance comedy/action/dramedy/tragedy/boy-meets-girl-meets-secret-government organization bent on genetic manipulation to craft super-slave-soldiers...film.... ??? Yeah, I know. It's crazy and doesn't fit in any one genre, but in what it doe create it creates MAGIC.
If you're one of the seven people in the world that hasn't seen this film yet go do so N-O-W. Stop reading this and see it immediately. Go!

Cap & Shield R Back, But So is Hydra
on May 16, 2016
Posted by: CJHansolo
A great follow up to "...The First Avenger" that builds upon the events from both "...First.." and "The Avengers".
The world has changed now due to super-human and extra-terrestrial involvement. The world is scared and S.H.E.I.L.D, which Cap now works for #and is helmed by a fantastic Robert Redford#, offers protection.
Of course "all that glimmers" off of Cap's Star-adorned shield is not gold, but the silvery-metallic of the Winter Soldier's Star-adorned biotic left arm.
Conspiracies, explosions, flying falcons, flying shields, talking computers, red hair and an eye-patch abound with tons of fun and entertainment.
Also, #per Disney's norm# the 3D is fabulous if you do have 3D capability.

The Superhero Duo Movie that Fans Want to See
on April 7, 2016
Posted by: CJHansolo
This adaptation of DC's Batman/Superman comic series is top notch. WB Animation capture the essence of Bats and Supes relationship that harkens itself to classic buddy movies like Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid.
The two titans are closest of friends overcoming to greatest of odds with only the reliance of each other...and that's all they need.
...Ah, if only Warner Brothers followed suit with this dynamic instead for Batman Vs. Superman then perhaps it could have been great...
