Maverick28's Reviews

The Civil War epic Gettysburg receives the star treatment from Warner with some spectacular results. Image quality is far better than would be expected. The picture, which is framed at the original aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and employs an anamorphic transfer, is nicely detailed with strong colors and excellent detail. The sound is also very impressive. A new 5.0 Dolby Digital is balanced very well between dialogue, sound effects, and music. None of these elements overwhelms the other making for a smart sound mix. Also available is a surround track in French and subtitles in English and French. The big surprise for this title is the number of supplemental features. Of strong interest is a commentary track from director/screenwriter Ronald F. Maxwell, cinematographer Kees Van Oosrum, author James M. McPherson, and historian Craig Symonds. While there are significant gaps between comments (only selected scenes have commentary), this track is still filled with fascinating information, both from the filmmaking and historical perspectives. In addition are two documentaries, the first hosted by actor Martin Sheen and covers the making of this film, while the second, the Oscar-nominated "The Battle of Gettysburg," narrated by Leslie Nielsen, takes a look at the battle in general. Both are fascinating in their own respects, and are complimented with a short "location" featurette with additional footage taken on the set. Finally rounding out this fine disc are the theatrical trailer and television spots, plus filmographies for some of the cast and the director, a battlefield map, and some additional interviews with the cast and crew. If there is one complaint about this DVD, it's the reluctance of Warner to use two discs for longer movies. At four-plus hours, most studios would split the movie over two discs, but in the case of Gettysburg, a DVD-18 has been used, meaning the movie is split over two sides, each with two layers, possibly creating problems with handling. Still, that is a small complaint for such a nice overall package.

This movie has been a favorite for years. It has historical accuracy and great acting. If all historical movies were as accurate, our children could learn a great deal through film.

The Hope and Crosby film The Road to Bali comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. There are neither subtitles nor closed-captions on this release. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, but this Alpha release is an inexpensive way to enjoy this great screen duo.

Bob Hope and Bing Crosby's "Road" movies kept a generation of movie lovers in stitches -- now a whole new generation can witness these hilarious films thanks to this Universal Studios Home Video release. Each film is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.33:1 full-frame and accompanied by an English Dolby Digital 2.0 audio mix. Extras include photo galleries, production notes, and DVD-ROM features, as well as an "Entertaining the Troops" featurette and "Sweet Potato Piper" singalong (on The Road to Singapore), a 1944 Command Performance (on Road to Zanzibar), a 1945 Command Performance, a Road to Morocco singalong (on Road to Morocco), and a "Hollywood Victory Caravan" featurette (on Road to Utopia).

Ron Maxwell's civil war epic Gods and Generals comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of the film. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. English, French, and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a scene-specific commentary track recorded by Maxwell as well as Civil War historians Keith Gibson and James I. Robertson Jr., a featurette on the realities of slave life during the time period of the film, a biography on General Stonewall Jackson, and a featurette on the painstaking historical accuracy of the film. A pair of music videos, one from Bob Dylan, and an introduction by Ted Turner rounds out this excellent package from Warner Bros. that is highly recommended to any Civil War enthusiast.

Stephen Lang makes this a better film than it would have been otherwise. HIs acting is superb and the realism is better than most of today's Hollywood films.
What's great about it: This film is not only great due to it cinematography but Stephen Lang is outstanding in every sense of acting.
What's not so great: Only in a few spots the film drags. But for the most part it is flowing.

David Lean's adaptation of Oliver Twist is given the deluxe treatment from The Criterion Collection on this DVD. The disc offers a standard full-frame image that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. Subtitles specifically designed for the deaf and hearing-impaired are available. Supplemental materials include a theatrical trailer. This classic film gets the home video release it deserves with this disc, which is recommended for anyone interested in classic movies.
