I give massive credit to Mike Flanagan, a young horror director on the rise, for taking what should have been a direct to DVD compulsory release of a sequel to a horror film that made just enough money to justify a second one and turning it into one of the best crafted horror films of the year. This is a man who knows his craft, with every technical element coming together as a cohesive whole to create an extremely entertaining horror experience. The film only falters slightly when it ultimately connects back to the original Ouija, a film so forgettable that I had to double check to see if I had even watched it. Ignoring that one unfortunate error in judgement, however, this film stands on its own as an expert piece of filmmaking.

The Eyes of My Mother is an exceptional debut film and a great addition to what has been a recent renaissance in horror cinema. Be warned that if horror means some sort of supernatural element to you, this will not meet that requirement. This is pure psychological horror and successful in being incredibly unsettling. The black and white cinematography is gorgeous, the performances are all top notch, and the screenplay and editing are very tight without a single wasted minute in the final cut. Highly recommended.

When Passengers was released, it seemed as though a bevy of negative reviews killed what was set to be one of the biggest hits of the year. A combination of high budget science fiction and a romance between two of the most charming and popular actors working today seemed like the perfect recipe, but it was one plot point, one I wont spoil here, that left such a sour taste in the mouths of some that they were outspoken in their disgust. The plot point in question concerns a moral dilemma and despite the film's attempts to address that dilemma head-on, it was too much for many people to overcome and transformed the romance into something they couldn't enjoy.
For me, that plot point was interesting and I felt it was handled well enough to overcome any discomfort. Moreover, the rest of the film worked quite well, particularly the somewhat sparse but awe-inspiring sequences featuring jaw-dropping special effects. The nightmare answer of what would happen if you were swimming in a pool and gravity suddenly disappeared is a real standout.
It will likely all come down to your opinion of the film which will largely come down to that one plot point, but if you enjoyed the film, it's hard to find any fault with this release. Too often over the last year, I've been forced to try and choose between the 4K or 3D release of a film or otherwise decide if it was worth making a double purchase. Here, you get the gorgeous looking film in every format you could want and with the unfortunate backlash against the film lowering the price, it feels like an easy purchase to make.

This is an incredible film, providing extreme tension perfectly orchestrated by the director and cast, all leading up to a final sequence that is truly harrowing, featuring some of the best acting of Tom Hanks's career. If you appreciate this film, check out United 93 and Bloody Sunday.

This is a great subtle look at a relationship between a man and a woman trying to just be friends in a culture that pushes them to be romantic. All the performances are great and everything feels very natural. A slight letdown when compared to the director's masterpiece, Nights and Weekends.

While this film takes a little while to get going and it lacks a certain sense of novelty that the original offered, it really works once it gets going and is an excellent study of the Hit-Girl character while offering plenty of laughs throughout. A worthy sequel.

This is a pretty great film, but a little disappointing when compared to the director's first feature, District 9. Both films offer unique and impressive visuals and great acting, but Elysium is a bit lacking in the story department, taking a fairly simplistic look at class warfare.

Best Series on TV Receives Superb Treatment

This is easily the best show on TV today, featuring incredible writing, acting, and production. This was the best season yet, featuring some shocking twists and incredible character development. The set, as always, is feature-rich and well put together, even including the entire season on DVD on top of the Blu-Rays. .

Upgraded my phone after the last one started feeling out-of-date sooner than expected and overall very pleased. Instantly started to receive 4G signal where I didn't before and battery life is excellent. Had to replace it within one month, however, when it fell on the floor and the screen cracked. Was surprised to see this happen so easily and worried it's an issue with the durability of the phone.

Some of the features like sharing and cable integration are impressive, but completely useless to someone such as myself. The technical specs are great, but pale a bit in comparison to PS4. The launch lineup is lacking and the supposed system-selling app Titanfall, while fun, doesn't really feel next-gen. Probably best to hold out for a larger library and a discounted price point.
