It's a hit and miss with getting calibration from Best Buy's Geek Squad. I had 3 calibrations from them: first one I paid for, then had to replace the TV due to a defect, so they came out to calibrate the replacement TV again. This second calibration was so awful that I had to get them back in to re-calibrate it (3rd calibration). Here are the bottom line facts:
- Quality of their calibrators varies greatly, so you practically have no idea if you'll get a pretty decent calibration, or a rather "bad" one.
- My first and last calibration were pretty decent though, and they will get your picture to look certainly better than any factory preset, but it is not exactly your top calibration. They spend maybe 45 minutes on your TV, whereas the best calibrators will spend a few hours. So if you are going to spend money to get the best picture your TV can provide, you may want to consider if you want to pay for only decent picture, or really the best picture? This may affect your decision which calibration service to go for.
- They also tend to go into TV's service mode, which should not be necessary, and I would prefer they just played with the TV's picture management modes instead. Whatever they change in the service menu is something I cannot undo or change later if I want, since the service menu is inaccessible to the regular user. Also changes in the service menu affect all picture modes of the TV, so you do not have any of the original factory presets any more the way they were delivered (for any of your own personal tweaks, or if you don't really like how they have adjusted your picture, etc).
In the end, I would certainly highly recommend anyone to get their TV calibrated one way or another, as factory presets are pretty bad and inaccurate on all TV's even the most expensive ones. However, just be aware that it's a bit of a hit and miss with Geek Squad, and if they don't get it to your satisfaction the first time, you may have to get a different guy to come out and correct it to your liking...
What's great about it: Should get you a better picture quality than the factory presets
What's not so great: Not exactly the top calibration service
I would recommend this to a friend!
