Battery life is out the ying-yang...
on December 19, 2018

After going through a lot of styles and manufacturers of Bluetooth earbuds, a couple of features have come to be the most important to me:
1 - battery life (tired of switching out sets of earbuds when spending the day listening to my music or audiobooks) - this set of earbuds leaves all the others I have used gasping for air and choking on the dust. No question the run-time on the Jaybirds is without peer.
2 - good fit, and I mean a good fit that is comfortable and will stay in when I drift off to sleep for the night listening to my Harry Potter audiobooks (I don't like waking up in the middle of the night and having to plug a dangling earbud back in). With that in mind, the "sport model" of earbud with the cush/wing plugs and silicone tips works best, as the winged plugs stay put and are suprisingly comfortable. The Jaybirds offer the option of "under the ear" or "over the ear" mounting, with an interesting "twist to fit" feature that gets the buds locked in your ear very snug and comfortable.
Jaybird has the basics well in hand with these earbuds. Pairing - easy. App available for setting sound levels and equalizer - nice touch, although I personally prefer to find a setting and leave it there for most listening instead of going back and forth with an app to make frequent tweaks to the sound. Durability - no question this pair will hold up for a long time. Some of my older earbuds have had the buttons and plastic covers deteriorate to the point of uselessness. The Jaybirds seem very well constructed with no "weak spots" that I can see that became problematic on other Bluetooth sets. Charging - proprietary magnetic system that works great and is nice to have, as long as you have it handy when needed. Jaybird's PR says that the magnetic system reduces the bulk of the headset control pod and helps reduce points of entry for water and dust - which makes good sense and seems to hold true in use. Sound quality - no problems here as the sound is as nice as you would expect at this price point. No noise-cancelling, but I have not found that noise-cancelling makes much difference with a good-fitting set of earbuds. Ear-cup headsets = yes, but earbuds = not so much. BATTERY LIFE! Did I mention battery life? Wow! The best I have experienced from about a dozen sets of earbuds with just about as many different manufacturers. This set provides HOURS MORE listening time than anything else I have tried. Wear them all night dozing off to audiobooks, and then keep them on for morning NPR news and on to Spotify for the workday. I hate to take them off when it's time to charge, but a couple of hours for full charge (or maybe 5-10 minutes to get several more hours) and they are good to go for another full night and day of use.
I'm not a big phone-user when wearing earbuds, but with the comfort and long battery life for this set, taking a call or two is inevitable. Sound clarity incoming is excellent, and outgoing is reported to be just fine as well. Really, phone call is a phone call - I use earbuds for listening, not chatting. Take the call, see you later, back to the morning news or music.
Overall, the price may seem a little more than I was comfortable with at first for "buds" - but after a few weeks of use I am confident that I will be using, and enjoying, this excellent and durable set of earbuds for a long time to come.

Good way to try out the wireless experience...

JLab Audio - JBuds Air True Wireless Headphones
With a good collection of various Bluetooth phones and buds, it was time to try "true" wireless. This pair was a nice place to start with a very attractive price for 5.0 Bluetooth and a portable charging case.
Setup is a little different, as you have to pair the buds with each other and then pair with your device, but the extra step was easy and once it is done, it is done. Getting a good fit is easy with several tips and also a set of cushes. This was a concern as it is nice not to have to deal with wires, but also a fast way to lose an earbud if the fit is not good and tight, while keeping an acceptable level of comfort. These do well, and once I settled on the right balance for a good fit, there has not been much concern about having one of the buds fall out and get lost in a pile of backyard leaves.
Along with a good fit comes suprisingly good sound. I listen to a good variety of formats including music files, podcasts, online radio, audiobooks > all of these have good sound. For most of these I have found the JLab Signature EQ setting to provide the best range of clarity and response.
Contols take some getting used to as in most "no look and see" headsets. The controls are different for R and L buds, and makes we wish for "universal control button" arrangements for ALL Bluetooth headphones/earbuds... but practice makes perfect and that's the price of using technology (sigh). I made a little modification by applying a color dot on the R bud, as the markings for L and R are hard to see and a nice red fingernail polish dot takes care of that deficiency.
Battery life is pretty much as advertised @ 3 - 4 hours depending on volume settings. Recharging using the case has already come in handy, as the case pops in the laptop bag and the buds can go in the charging case for about an hour and ready to go again.
Overall these are a good starter set considering the price and very acceptable performance for sound and battery life. If you are looking to "try and see" if you care for the true wireless experience, these should fill the bill without breaking the bank.

OK and price keeps the worry factor low…
on December 3, 2018
Posted by: banjo
from macon, ga
First I have to look at the price, and considering that these are a serviceable pair of earbuds that I won’t have to worry about losing or damaging when out and about.
For walking the dog, going to the pool or beach, working in the yard, heading out for some shopping – any situation where I want to listen to music/audiobook/podcast/radio – these are just fine. The sound quality is not at the top end, but who cares when there is outside noise from people, traffic, or chopping logs? Crank up the volume and fill up your head with sound, and the high fidelity set of headphones is waiting at the house later on when it is time to settle down and focus on getting the best quality.
Battery life is OK – about 6 to 8 hours depending on volume. I can pop these in and go to sleep listening to my Harry Potter audiobooks, and since the audiobook player cuts off after 90 minutes the earbuds go into standby and they are usually OK for a few more hours listening in the morning before they have to be put back on charge. Very serviceable and enough battery life to make a good day around town before needing to worry about a swap.
Microphone is OK as well – phone calls are not any better or worse than other similar earbuds I have used, so nothing to really complain about here. I don’t spend a lot of time on the phone with earbuds, but when a call comes in these work just fine.
Fit – there are lots of ear tips and some cushions to customize the fit. About the same as most everyone else. These are the “sport” model meaning they hook over your ears, so they tend to stay in better with the extra stability of the hooks.
Overall, these are a serviceable set of earbuds with pretty good battery life and a secure fit. For the price, a good deal and as long as you are comfortable with the over-the-ear hook, you should be OK for ‘general purpose’ listening.

What will they think of next…
on December 3, 2018
Posted by: banjo
from macon, ga
The BEST thing about this little device is that the propellers are protected within the frame. For me, this took the stress out of learning to fly and control the drone without worrying about hitting the walls and ceiling while avoiding smacking someone in the face. We have a couple of videos from the “learning curve” that just might make it to the America’s Funniest Home Video show. With that out of the way, this is a real “attention getter” and “party starter” in so many places. Shopping at the mall, getting the attention of a room full of students, motivating the bleacher creatures to stand up and cheer at the basketball game, impressing your favorite techno-geek friends (not many people have seen or heard of this selfie-cam yet), or otherwise getting the conversation started with just about any group of people.
ONCE YOU GET THE HANG OF IT this is really a nifty little attention-getter. Practice, practice, practice and you will soon be buzzing your buddies and posting some fun stuff to your social media pages.
FIRST > be sure to get a full charge and install the app on your phone or tablet.
Build Quality > nice fit and finish – seems like something that will last for a good long time. Looks nice when showing it off to friends.
Controls > takes some practice but once you play around with it in a BIG ROOM so you don’t have to worry about crashing into the walls it becomes pretty easy – like using a video game controller.
Pictures and Videos > good quality – not as good as the best phones but better than mine. Pictures are pretty sharp and videos are remarkably smooth and stable. I have seen some comments on loss of quality in low light situations, but personally haven’t seen that issue around the house, school, and shopping mall.
Battery Life > oops, always nice to have a longer flight time, but count on about 5 minutes. This means you really want to practice practice practice before using the drone for really important shots – you don’t want to miss those opportunities from having to fiddle around to get the drone to cooperate. On the plus side – recharge is quick and you can take a break and get back to the next set of pictures or a nice video shot. LED lights let you know that condition of the battery when using and re-charging so no guesswork.
Indoor/Outdoor > this is not a super-drone – the recommendation is to keep it indoors or use when there is NO WIND outside. This drone is so small and light it will quickly get away from you if you are outdoors and a little breeze kicks up.
Portability > fits in the shirt pocket or beside the phone in a holster case. No problem carrying in a purse I guess, but don’t own one so can’t say I have gone that way. Leather pouch is a little tight but take it easy and the snug fit is good to have.
Cool Factor > OK so this thing is cool, if you like neat little technology gadgets and enjoy showing them off to your buds. I’m a more mature consumer, but this thing got the “oohs” and “ahhs” when I whipped it out at today’s faculty meeting and took it for a selfie spin around the room. What was discussed at the meeting – who knows? But everyone will go home and talk about the flying selfie drone at the dinner table tonight and look for the video on the school FB page.
Price > well, could be less but what’s a few bucks here and there to have something new to show off?
Overall, if you like this kind of stuff, this selfie drone will not disappoint.
NOTE: this is not technically a “drone” that requires an FAA license to operate. From the manufacturer’s website: “Because of its total weight of 2.8 ounces, AirSelfie2 is not affected by the regulations for drones. Therefore, it can be flown in any public place without a license.”
NOTE about the NOTE: Don’t get carried away and try to fly this device in a public place until you are REALLY GOOD at controlling it. Hitting someone in the face with it is definitely not cool.

Magic Wand with wicked suction….

We’ve come a long way from the first portable dustbusters, and the Shark ION is evidence of the progress in portability and efficiency! This very light and portable magic wand has POWERFUL suction and is push-button quick to empty and pick up where you left off. First portable I have used that will get the dust and pet hair off the ceiling fan blades without having to go back for several re-tries. Easy to empty (push-button), filters can be cleaned (no replacement cost), good battery life and quick to recharge. Can’t think of anything that would make this a better portable vacuum.

Plantronics rep carries over...
on November 8, 2018
Posted by: banjo
from macon, ga
Plantronics is well-known for headphones used in the office, most products work well and are of good quality. Decided to try the Plantronics brand for personal use, and have been very pleased with the results.
Fit: no problems with a choice of tips for the most comfortable and secure fit. The buds go in well and stay in even when wearing to take a nap or drift off with some music or an audiobook at night. Overnight wear is comfortable.
Noise Cancelling: the best I have experienced with ear bud system. Adjustable for low/med/high depending on your need, and sometimes the low setting is enough to let me focus on the music and save some battery life.
Battery: easily 6-8 hours of constant use for music or audiobooks, and you can get several more hours with a quick 15 minute charge if you need to top off the batteries. In a pinch, you can connect to phone with the 3.5mm headphone jack and keep on going for as long as you like.
Connectivity: quick pairing with multiple devices. If you get the button presses right, you can switch back and forth between laptop and phone very quickly.
Sound Quality: this is where I wondered if Plantronics could match up with the more well-known music earbuds, and was pleased by the quality of the sound. Not a "big bass" sound, as others are pushing that type of product, but nicely rounded sound with good bass, middle, and treble. I'm the first to say I am not an audiophile, but for the price point the sound from the Plantronics is as good as anything else I have tried, maybe a little better with the noise canceling feature.
"Smart Magnet" feature: when not in use, you can 'click' the earbuds together magnetically and this will shut them off to save the battery. Maybe not the best idea if you are using them to catch incoming phone calls, but you can catch the call by popping the buds apart and they very quickly re-connect and start working normally.
Extras: nice carrying pouch and stylish appearance.

Good home office printer for teacher & student use
on September 28, 2018
Posted by: banjo
from macon, ga
This is a good home office printer for regular use by teacher, recipe collector, and student. The “all in one” functions are very nice to have available when needed, especially the scanning and copying capabilities.
This printer replaces an earlier Brother model that came out before the wireless and G**gle Cloud printing capabilities were in wide use. Nothing wrong with the older Brother, but with a good price point and many (many) features not available on the older model, this seemed the logical step to move forward with the newer technologies and performance features.
Installation was remarkably easy, with self-guided steps on the printer display. I didn’t need to refer to the startup manual, and actually put the “quick start” guide down once I saw how intuitively the printer display screen walked through the steps of the set-up process. Installing the ink cartridges and connecting to wireless network was well-guided and easy to complete. Windows (10) picked up the printer right away for several desktops and laptops, as did all the android phones, tablets, and chromebooks.
Setting up the G**gle Cloud printing was somewhat tedious, even though the Cloud printing was already set up to use the older printer while connected to one of the desktops. Having a G**gle Cloud compatible printer did make the process easier, but there were still a number of steps to go through before everything was set up properly. As long as the computers, phones, tablets, and chromebooks are on the local wireless network, the printer shows up as a printing choice without having to install any special apps or software. When switching to G**gle Cloud printing, all the devices need to be configured for the first use, then it is good to go for future print jobs.
I recommend downloading the Brother iPrint&Scan software to get full use of all this printer’s capabilities. Using this software, it has been quite simple to copy, scan, print, and fax (using LandLine connection) > full use of the all-in-one printer capabilities. The only hang-up came when scanning a document and then using the Brother software to upload the scan to cloud storage. I tried this with DropBox, OneDrive, and G**gle Cloud and could not get a successful upload to cloud storage with any of those. The iPrint&Scan software would connect and validate with all 3 of my cloud storage services, but would not successfully complete the scan upload. Each one of them connected, verified, created a folder for storing uploads, and then timed out and threw up an error message on the Brother software. The scan can be saved locally and then uploaded to all of those cloud storage services, which at least provides a workaround.
Although solidly built, some of the paper guides and adjustments seem a little flimsy with the plastic parts. Having wiped out a few previous printers due to one or two little parts breaking off, I would say that with proper caution when making paper guide adjustments, this printer is well-built enough for light home office and student use. I am hoping that the inevitable/occasional paper jams that come with any printer will not result in having to deal with flimsy plastic guides and rollers, but that hasn’t happened yet and hopefully will not be a significant issue.
Ink consumption and long-life cartridges are heavily advertised. Definitely convenient to have more ink in the machine to have longer times between refills, and whether the cost-savings for ink is there or not will be evident with longer use.
Quality of the printing is excellent for documents, and OK for pictures on plain paper. Printing pictures on standard paper produces an acceptable image and have not tried using photo paper yet. Other reviews seem to indicate that the printer makes a good quality photo print. Personally, I would rather keep the color ink available for printing documents and reports, and if a lot of photos are needed, run down to the shopping center and use a specialized photo printer for making a lot of quality photographs. Saves the hassle of loading photo paper and using a lot of color ink.
Overall I am pleased with the function and easy setup for this printer. Not having to go to a separate scanner is very convenient, and the extra kick of being able to run a few quick copies is very nice and saves having to take it to the office to slip a few copies on the side. The printer seems best suited for the home user, and fits well with the requirements of a teacher (me), a recipe collector (wife), and a student (son). We all get good use from the printer and can use it from any of our devices.

LIght in the hand, but durable construction...
on September 4, 2018
Posted by: banjo
from macon, ga
Lots of gaming mice out there, and this one is a nice addition with an excellent combination of sturdiness and lightness – which is not such an easy formula to satisfy. Some mid-priced gaming mice are more of a “plastic shell” feel, but this mouse fits well in the hand, has a nice textured feel (not slippery) and seems built to hold up to some bumping around that may come when in the middle of a gaming session.
Out of the box, the mouse works well, and then has excellent customization with the Fnatic software (download after hooking up the mouse). Add to that the lighting effects, which can also be customized in many ways, and this is a good mid-priced gaming mouse that also works well for everyday use. You may want to change settings to go from regular to gaming use, but the Fnatic software makes that easy with settings that can be configured to your liking and then easily switched back and forth.
Pair this with a Fnatic RGB gaming (mechanical) keyboard like the Fnatic Streak RGB, and it’s a good gaming set that most gamers should be able to customize to their particular needs.

Time-tested mechanical keys and nice RGB software
on September 4, 2018
Posted by: banjo
from macon, ga
Mechanical Keyboards are “must have” for gaming, and more often these days a nice addition to replace the cheapo membrane keyboards that so many settle for – without ever having tried the mechanical advantage. For the Fnatic keyboard, it’s hard to go wrong with the Cherry Red switches, which have a good ‘bump’ to them without a lot of clicky noise. These keys have a good feel and don’t have the mushy bottom-out finish of other mechanical keys.
USB pass-through is nice to have, and seems to be a feature left out of many top-name gaming keyboards currently on the market.
RGB lighting is bright and can be customized in many ways from simple to fancy using the Fnatic software (download once you get the keyboard attached). Adding a Fnatic illuminated mouse to the mix adds to the light and color for a very nice overall effect.
All in all, you really need to go and put your hands on a few different keyboards on display to see what feel and sound work best for your particular tastes.

Unique styling and nice price point.
on August 25, 2018
Posted by: banjo
from macon, ga
This is a basic “no frills” monitor that is very good for office and school use, with adequate performance for gaming. The appearance is very stylish, with an extremely thin profile and edge-to-edge display. Check the style, as it is very distinctive and as such you may or may not choose this as a second monitor if you are picky about your monitors having the same or similar appearance.
Overall, the monitor is very easy to assemble and set up, just a matter of a few minutes to get it up and running. Please note that there is no VESA mounting capability, so this will need to sit on your desktop or computer stand. The loop-shaped base has a large footprint (see pictures) which makes it very stable. If you have very limited space on your desktop, you might want to have a close look at the footprint to be sure you have room.
Colors are as good as other monitors in the price range. For twice the price you could get a better image, but this is not a high-end monitor and should not be expected to be the best of the best. The 1080p resolution is just as good as any other I have tried at this price point. I have not noticed the bleeding around some edges that other reviewers have noted, so suggest you check your monitor out as soon as you get it home in case there is some issue with the light bleeding on your monitor.
For adjustments, if you frequently change your monitor settings depending on what you are doing at the time, the adjustments on this monitor may slow you down. The menu buttons are out of sight around the back of the monitor and require some getting used to and generally more than normal clicking around to get the right button for the desired adjustments. If, however, you are a “set it and forget it” user – once you get your preferred settings, you should be good to go. Windows 10 picked up on the 75Hz refresh capability, and automatically adjusted to the higher refresh rate.
Connections are either HDMI or the old-style 15-pin VGA. The monitor is so thin that the HDMI connector really “sticks out” on the back due to the straight plug-in angle (in other words, the HDMI does not plug in the side, but goes straight into the back of the monitor – see picture of the back of the monitor). If your video card requires a DVI connection, you will need to get an inexpensive adapter or DVI-in to HDMI-out cable. This was my solution to run this as a second monitor off a video card, and fortunately there is no loss of performance. The power block is proprietary and comes in the box with a small plug connecting power to the monitor (see picture of back of monitor).
This monitor should give you good performance once you get it set up to your liking. High intensity gamers will pass over this to go for the higher refresh rates (at a higher price), but the rest of the world should find this meets everyday use and most gaming needs.

Great for older geeks who don't need the "sizzle"
By banjo from macon, ga
Actually the "top of the line" G910 gaming keyboard was marked down to a lower price when I got this, but too much "gamer" stuff on the G910 and not for an 'older professional' who wants to appear more mature than his 13-year-old gaming son. IMO the G910 wasn't selling as well as hoped, and the G810 is (to me) the superior model in design, appearance, and performance.
This G810 looks professional on the desk, has OUTSTANDING color display (note that the 'special' keys on the number keys are also illuminated -- missing on many of the other illuminated keyboards - aren't these ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) the ones you can never remember when typing in the dark?), no "bottom of the keys" light spillover that takes away from the illumination focus, superior engineering on the Romer-G switches (Check out the tour of the Romer-G factory in Japan on YouTube), and feels like a BRICK in the hand (a GOOD BRICK) with heavy-duty construction. The 3-way adjustable tilt and huge rubber feet on the bottom will keep this from sliding around on any desk, including glass-tops. The only thing that makes this look like a "gamer rig" is the FABULOUS and CRISP color displays... which are easy to see even with the lights on in the room > fully adjustable to get it just the way you want at home or at work. I may be an old-timer, but I don't mind showing off a little bit and this keyboard is an EYE-CATCHER when the lights start doing the 'wave' across the keyboard!
I read all the reviews and fiddled with the keyboards on display and there seem to be "Logitech Nay-Sayers" who can't bear the idea of using anything other than the older design "cherry" keys. I have gone from manual touch-typing > to I B M Selectric > to I B M 'clicky' keyboard (still one of my favorites) > to membranes > to whatever-cheapo-keyboard Dell includes in their educational computers > to a Saitek PK17U Cyborg > to this keyboard. This one is the best by FAR! Re: keys... you get a little 'click' so the sound and some tactile/touch reinforcement for keyboarding (typing) is there, but not too loud and for me just enough to let me know I hit the key. Yes it feels different from the cheapo Dell keyboard i just unplugged and replaced, but every keyboard is different and this one feels like driving a luxury car!
Speaking of my son, he is now looking over at my new keyboard and looking at his illuminated keyboard and I think I know what he will be asking for come Christmas. Fortunately, the box still had the promotion of free download and activation code for "The Division" so the kid has something to keep him busy until Santa Claus comes.
If you are an old crab like me, but like a little 'sizzle' when using your computer and want to treat yourself to a smooth-as-silk keyboard... this is the one I would recommend. Leave the "whoopee" keyboards to the kids.
PS - you can hit a quick button on the keyboard and turn off the light display if you want to turn off the light show for a while.

Update @ Christmas 2016
December 21, 2016
Mentioned that my son was keeping an eye on my G810 from the get-go... first time I let him 'test drive' my G810 he says "ooooh, that feels nice" and decided he wanted to go to mechanical keyboard. He has a 'gamer' RBD keyboard (non-mechanical) with extra bells and whistles he has been using for a year or two, but instantly fell in love with the mechanical feel. Just gave him a "Week before Christmas" present of his own G810. He had his pick of the models available, and after tapping some keys and looking at the different models chose to get the G810. Just goes to show the "fancy schmancy" keyboards might look more-cooler-better but the proof is in the feel of the keys. It's a keyboard, after all.

Does this device allow you to create file folders that I can be accessed while on a website? I need to transfer pics from my notepad and then upload them by accessing the folder from my companies website.

Set it up with a Google Drive for cloud storage and sharing of files.

My screen is upside down, how do I fix?

Oh my goodness! You must have been shipped the Australian model that is used south of the equator! LOL but seriously folks simply hit ctrl+shift+refresh. The refresh key is the one with the spinning arrow. It'll rotate the screen 90 degrees. Do that again since 90+90=180 degrees which is half-way round the circle. Peace out...

Does this game as of 7/15/16 still come w/ a free The Division key?

I just picked one up 8/21/16 and it had the "Offer" logo on the box and a cupon inside.... should be good to go as long as your box has the "Offer" logo on it....
