Impressive build quality, quiet, and room to grow
on March 22, 2024
Posted by: IndyTechGuy
This particular version of the ASUS ROG Strix G16H is a reasonably priced offering for the parts it has, with excellent cooling potential, room to grow and get upgraded down the line.
In short, it’s a reasonably sized, sleek system, performs as a 4060 TI / 14700f system should, capable of playing lighter or older games at 4k60, 1440p120, or more, depending on the graphics settings, DLSS support, and various other technologies that have come to be used in modern games.
It came shipped in a box with tons of space between the PC and the sides of the box, with nice, thick foam keeping it in place. It seems very unlikely to receive shipping damage, and is easy to unbox, with nothing but the PC and a small box of accessories inside. They did not include a mouse or keyboard in the package, which I consider a good thing; They’re typically low-quality token items you would never want to use anyway, reducing e-waste.
All the parts are standard, which is great! The PSU has standard ATX connectors, the motherboard has a standard micro-ATX form factor, and the case has standoffs for micro and standard ATX boards. You could mix and match any part from this build with any other off-the-shelf PC parts without any problems, which is great for upgradability and reducing e-waste. The only oddity is that the motherboard is powered by an 8-pin ATX power cable rather than 4+4 pin EPS cable, but that’s not a problem, really, just a quirk to take note of. Any other PSU could power the platform regardless. I suspect this is for ease of assembly for the manufacturer. The accessory box includes a 4+4 pin EPS cable for the semi-modular power supply, in case you ever change the motherboard out, as well as a few other cables for extra SATA/Molex power. The power supply is a 750w 80+ Gold rated unit from Great Wall, which is a reputable supplier for many well-known enthusiast gaming brands.
The cable management is immaculate, and everything was firmly plugged in and secured. Cables behind the tray are all zip-tied and neatly laid out.
Build quality in general is high. There were no loose screws, the GPU was secured firmly by an extra bracket, and there was a minor amount of cosmetic damage on the heatsink for one of the NVME drives. A bit of paint seemed to be chipped off, probably from a screwdriver that slipped. The cable management is very good, everything was fully and firmly plugged in, with excessive slack zip-tied and hidden as much as possible. Even the rear fan cable is tastefully coiled up to minimize its intrusion into the main area of the case. The case design is gamer-y, but not overbearing, and the RGB is tasteful without excess wasted on every single fan and component being RGB enabled.
The memory is a bit slow at CL46 for DDR5-5600, but it’s dual channel, and this is an Intel platform, so it’s not that significant, especially paired with a 4060 TI. Although, I would have liked to see heat spreaders, or black PCBs for the memory - they’re just plain green, unadorned.
The 240mm liquid cooler is far, far more than adequate for the stock power limits for the Intel i7-14700f. With both the GPU and CPU at full load, the system is whisper quiet. That changes as you increase the power limit, obviously. ASUS' Armory Crate software has very little in the way of options for boosting the CPU's power limits. As a non-K sku, the CPU is not overclockable, but it can have its power limit increased. Turbo mode in Armory Crate will give you a long-term power limit of 100w to play with, in comparison to the stock 65w, but that's a far way off from what the CPU/cooler/motherboard can really handle. Intel’s eXtreme Tuning Utility is able to move the power limit even higher than what Armory Crate offers, and you will need to use XTU if you do not want to use Armory Crate, as there are no options in BIOS to move the power limit up, as far as I can tell. The short term limit is ~220w, for about ten seconds, under both performance and turbo presets. The 100w Turbo preset gives about a 26% performance uplift over 65w, in a pure multithreaded benchmark, like Cinebench. Diminishing returns in terms of performance per watt can surely be found the higher you go, but it won’t make much of a difference for gaming. I would like to see ASUS provide their own power slider in Armory Crate, or in the BIOS.
I had expected there to be one 2TB SSD rather than two 1TB SSDs. It's not a problem necessarily, but if you do want more space (in the form of NVME drives) you will have to compensate for the 1TB you're replacing, as you only get two slots on the motherboard.
There's six SATA ports on the motherboard, though nowhere in the case to mount additional SSDs or HDDs. However, as previously stated, all parts are standard, and could be transferred into a different case with more mounting options, if you desired.
Gaming performance is as you would expect; The case design is more than adequate for cooling the 4060 TI, and both the GPU and CPU hardly break above 60c in their default power-limits of 160w and 65w, respectively - while staying virtually silent to boot.
True, native 4k gaming at >60fps is achievable for last-gen games without ray-tracing, and for newer ones, DLSS complicates what "4k" really means anymore. At 1080p or 1440p, you can expect high refresh rates of >120fps in most last-gen titles, or much more in esports oriented games. Hitman 3, on the Dubai benchmark, can handle 4k60 native on ultra (sans ray tracing options) quite handily.
Ray tracing performance is again a difficult benchmark to quantify, given the rampant number of titles with differing upscaling techniques and usage of ray tracing to augment the image. In a purely ray traced title like Quake II RTX, the 4060 TI can manage a steady 29fps at true 4k. Much more at lower resolutions. Shadow of the tomb raider benched at >4k60 on ultra, without ray traced shadows, but required DLSS performance mode to achieve the same with ray traced shadows. YMMV depending on the game. 8GB of VRAM is generally considered suboptimal for 4k, but it really just depends on the game in question.
In summary, this would be an excellent choice for a gamer looking to get into custom PC building sometime in the future, or anyone looking for a solid quality, non-RGB-bonanza-gaudy, gaming prebuilt capable of mid-high tier performance.

Significant speed increase
on February 18, 2024
Posted by: IndyTechGuy
I replaced a factory non-SSD drive in my laptop I use for photo and video editing that had a 500 GB traditional drive and 32 GB of ram. Given the amount of ram I didn’t think there would be such a night and day difference in performance, but I was wrong. Aside from faster loading and saving, the increased speed in editing and editing, rendering and other photo/video manipulation is fantastic.
This drive supports PCIe version 4 with a stated maximum read speed of 5,150 MB/s and a maximum write speed of 4,900 MB/s. My computer only supports up to version 3, and PCIe 4 has approximately doubled the bandwidth of 3. As you can see from my test results, if you were using this drive in a system that supports PCIe version 4 you would reach the advertised speeds in sequential transfer. With PCIe version 3 testing with a 1Gib test file the read speed was a very respectable 3,541 MB/s and the write speed was 3,199 MB/s. I've seen a better inrease in performance with this upgrade than when I doubled my ram.

Much more than a “rice cooker”!
on January 28, 2024
Posted by: IndyTechGuy
To call this a “5.0-quart rice cooker” doesn’t do it justice. There are program options for preparing Quick Rice, White Rice and Brown Rice, there are also options to Steam, Slow Cook, Sauté, Oatmeal, Multigrain (such as quinoa) and Keep Warm. There’s also a manual control to Keep Warm, but the unit also defaults to that once the cooking is complete for every setting except Sauté.
The unit comes with a non-stick inner pot, a 2.3 quart steam basket, measuring cup and a standing rice paddle. Having used many different rice cookers in the past, this one is by far the easiest to clean with every part easily detachable for cleaning. And it has one of the best steam management systems that is essential to proper cooking. Additionally, there’s a delay timer that can delay start times up to 24 hours, and the keep warm function also lasts for 24 hours but they don’t recommend keeping rice more than 5 hours. There’s an accompanying recipe book with detailed cooking instructions and 12 recipes, and other recipes are available via a QR Code.

Perfect laser printer for home or a small office!
on January 14, 2024
Posted by: IndyTechGuy
This printer is used in our home, but we homeschool so we do a lot of printing and scanning. We had a laser printer previously but were given an inkjet as a gift without realizing how much more it would cost to operate. And we have months of very limited use over the summer and found our ink would tend to dry out when not regularly used, so we switched back to a laser printer.
We wanted one that didn’t take up a lot of space, a large paper tray with a manual feed option, duplex printing, copy and scanning functions and a flatbed scanner only instead of a document feeder. We also wanted wireless and wired network connectivity, and the option to connect directly to a computer via a USB cable. This unit exceeded all our requirements AND at a great price point!
There’s a 2.7” touch screen with cloud connectivity to Google Drive and other cloud-based services, and there’s a Brother Mobile Connect App to print/scan from your devices and manage your printer.
While the unit has a stated 36 PPM copy speed, I haven’t had copy that much so I can’t confirm that. The optical scan resolution is 1200 x 1200 dpi, and the prints are crisp and sharp.
The unit includes a starter toner cartridge rated for 700 pages and a drum unit rated for 15,000 pages.

Incomparable sound! The GOAT of BT earbuds!
on December 2, 2023
Posted by: IndyTechGuy
For starters, these earbuds are as big as they look on the out facing side. There’s nothing “discrete” about them, which isn’t a negative! One of my complaints with other brands is that they were on the verge of being too small for any real functionality, plus I often dropped them. The actual tip that goes in the ear is a standard size and is extremely comfortable. Most units come with 3 different size ear tips, but Denon includes 4 different sizes ranging XS to L and a foam set. Also included are two different sized wing attachments for a secure fit.
The stated battery life which seems to be spot on is 8 hours, with an extra 24 hours available via the storage case which charges via the included USB-C cable and can also charge wirelessly. Two devices can be connected at once, and either earbud will work independently if you like to switch to extend battery life. The earbuds are marketed as sweat resistant so should be good for most workouts that don’t involve actual water.
There is an accompanying app, but you must have both earbuds in to use it. The app allows for multiple user profiles, which is important once you personalize the sound response. When you start the app, it will do a test to determine whether you have selected the right ear tips for a good fit. It will play sound and picks up the feedback via the 8 included microphones to determine the fit. Once done it then does a hearing test to measure the range you can hear in each ear and set the personalized audio profile including the EQ settings accordingly. But there’s also the option for manual controls. The app allows you to customize the “tap” controls on the earbuds, which include the standard expected options. You can also control the Adaptive noise cancelling, immersive base and a social mode that allows you to hear outside sounds for office or other environments where needed. I was very impressed with the additional “immersive base” option! It made it sound like you were in the room with the sound source!
The only thing I would change about these earbuds is related to the case design. Given how flat the tops are, how flush they fit in the case and the power of the magnets holding them in…I wish the indent to remove them was a bit deeper.

Portable comfort!
on November 28, 2023
Posted by: IndyTechGuy
I'm not a fan of cramped keyboards, so the typical keyboard case for my tablets normally just take up space and I end up using my laptop if typing is required. This keyboard is a game changer. It will connect via Bluetooth to just about any Windows, Chrome, Apple, Android or Amazon Fire device/tablet. It is a full size 104-key device with number and multimedia keys. The scissor action keys make a huge difference compared to the normal membrane key you'd find in similarly prices devices. They provide a solid typing experience with a really good response and feel. There are lights to let you know if the number lock or caps lock is engaged, and when the keyboard is turned on. There's a simple toggle switch for power, and a button next to it for pairing to your devices. The keyboard uses two AAA batteries which are included, and has a stated battery life of 13 months depending on use. While I don't see it stated in the instructions, my experience is that if you plan to use it with more than one device you need to re-pair it each time since there's not multi-device toggle switch. But as easy and fast as it pairs, that hasn't been a problem.

Pocket sized all-in-one charger!
on November 28, 2023
Posted by: IndyTechGuy
This unique charger folds flat and has a small strap to keep it closed when not in use. It can charge via a power block (yours) and the included USB-C cable. The unit has a USB-C to USB-A adapter that stores in the base of the unit. The stated charging strengths are 7.5W for an iPhone, 5W for an Apple Watch and up to 10W for other Qi-enabled devices. It charged an iPhone 13 and an iPhone 11 with a mag safe case with no issues, but it would not charge any other Qi-enabled device in my testing. I tried 2 name brand cell phones and a Qi charging enabled tablet and none would charge. But it worked flawlessly for the Apple devices, and has a discreet internal cord management system when not in use. When folded it's a little over 3.1 inches by 3.5 inches square and about 1.5 inches high, so it will easily fit in the side pocket of any computer bag. The body of the unit is a combination of plastic and silicone. The watch charging ring folds flat for storage, or will fold up to hold the watch for charging and visibility at night.

It could pay for itself the 1st time you use it!
on November 14, 2023
Posted by: IndyTechGuy
For those that always ask, there is an accompanying app named Drive Smarter for this unit, but it’s not required for use. The app gives you access to receive and share alerts with other connected units. Unlike other detectors I’ve owned, this unit has built in GPS. With that as you silence false alerts it will note the location and not alert you in the future. I also noted a big difference in signal filtering that has resulted in fewer false alerts. The antenna to detect laser speed detection from the front or the rear. There are 3 sensitivity modes for signal detection, and an auto function that works when connected to the Drive Smarter app that will adjust the setting based on your speed.
The unit had a rotary on/off/volume control, as well as buttons to mark false alerts, adjust the display brightness, access the device menu, change the sensitivity and to mute the sound manually or automatically. When the mute is set to auto, you hear about 4 seconds of the alert and then it reduces the volume if there is a signal. The display will show the radar band, signal strength (how close the source of the alert is) and frequency. When connected to your phone it can also display your speed, and you can set over speed alerts. The unit has the choice of English or Spanish language. There’s also an option to show less detail on the screen which will result in the signal strength being shown as Low/Med/High. Additionally, you can turn on/off any of the band detections as well as a low voltage alert.
When connect to the Drive Smarter app, the unit will alert you to the proximity of Red-Light Camera’s, Speed Traps, Photo Enforcement Zones, Speed Cameras, and Caution areas by itself or in tandem with radar alerts.
There’s also a smart power mode that will put the unit in standby for 15 minutes if the car is turned off for short stops, which will avoid any delays going through a fresh power on cycle.
The unit has a built-in speed camera and red-light camera database that can be updated via a computer app along with any firmware updates.

Sleek, quality audio at a reasonable price
on September 22, 2023
Posted by: IndyTechGuy
I recently picked up the Logitech Yeti Orb microphone, and it's quite a good value for gamers, or anyone looking to move beyond a crusty built-in headset or webcam mic. First off, let's talk about convenience. This microphone presents itself to the system as a regular USB microphone. There's no need to have Logitech G Hub installed to use it, though if you want to change the RGB settings you will need to install it at least once to do that, and the settings are saved on the device itself. There is no audio processing on-board the mic, it's all done through G Hub.
The G Hub software comes with a decently sized suite of voice effects, filters, and noise removal, with full customization of all options that the built-in effects/filters make use of, so you can tweak presets to your liking or make entirely new ones yourself. The noise removal is not some type of AI-based system, though, so while it's good for fan or other regular, low-level background noise, it will not completely remove sporadic effects like a squeaking chair, heavy typing, or particularly loud mouse clicks. It does include a standard mounting screw, so you can ditch the table stand and use a boom arm if you wish to reduce particularly heavy keyboard thunking.
You can make macros to play audio effects or change filter effects in G Hub, but it should be noted that it requires you to use supported Logitech keyboards/mice. If you don't have any other Logitech peripherals, you can still use sound bytes and filters, but you have to manually navigate the software to activate them.
One thing I absolutely love about this microphone is the built-in pop filter. You don't need to fuss with external filters; it's got you covered. And the low noise floor? Fantastic. It makes my recordings sound crisp and clean without any unwanted background noise.
The pop filter built into the mic is fantastic, and it's great to have no need to fuss with any add-ons that would take away from its understated design. It has a low noise floor, and thanks to the integrated USB interface you don't need to worry about the quality of your mic ports or a DAC/amp, or other interference from a long audio cable.
Finally, the RGB is minimal - just a strip that faces the user, and the G logo on top. If you're specifically looking for an "RGB" microphone, there are flashier options available - but if you're looking for a good no-frills microphone with everything included at a reasonable price, you should definitely consider the Yeti Orb.

Powerful portable blending buddy!
on September 2, 2023
Posted by: IndyTechGuy
Since I travel I needed a portable blender for smoothies and energy drinks, and this unit lives up to expectations. It charges via an included USB-C cord (no charging block included) in about 2 hours, and has a stated life of about 15 uses. I tend to blend a lot of ice drinks longer than most, so I average about 12. It's portable and fits in most car cup holders, and has a carrying handle. It includes an 18 oz blending jar that is dishwasher safe. The included sipping lid is leak proof so you don't have to worry about spills. Like most blenders it can also self-clean by just running a 30-second cycle. There a separate power and blending buttons to minimize the chance of turning it on accidently. There's also the option to purchase additional 18 oz or 16 oz jars for sharing. So far everything I've made has come out just as if it was made in a full size blender. It's great for bringing ingredients to work or school to blend at some point during the day, or to make at home and take with you without having to drag out the big blender!

Not a good phone
By BAronson
I bought this phone after reading the what seemed to be amazing reviews. I was slightly disappointed after the third day of having my phone when it would reset itself about 5 times a day due to it over heating. Bearing with it i kept the phone. The phone eventually stopped over heating but with that problem going away, another arose. the camera. No matter what you take a picture of it comes out grainy and slightly blurred. I, being a photographer, was highly disappointed at this. The battery power was another concern. I am on my phone for maybe, 2 hours total a day. My phone will be at 100% at 8 AM and by 10 AM it will be on 22% without me even using it yet. I turn on battery saver and it seems to make the battery die faster. I have now had the phone for a year, the phone now, will not display the keyboard and then after it being frozen for 5 minutes will completly restart and come back on and repeat the process over again. When the phone actually remains on it will consistently bring up the "Ok google" voice activation without me saying a word. Data and storage is not good. I am supposed to have nationwide data, but don't get it ANYWHERE through t mobile and the storage on my phone is constantly full even without any pictures or apps on it. Apps crash on a daily basis and the phone is very delayed (after pressing the home button, it is usual to have to wait a half minute before anything shows up). I would NOT buy this phone. I would spring for the slightly more expensive but oh so worth it LG Stylo. I had the stylo for 3 years and had no complaints about the phone at all. Very durable and very fast.

The LG Stylo was released in May of 2015...I'm confused as to how you could have had it for 3 years.
Statements like this make your review "suspect".

Hi! I'm new to gaming laptops and was wondering how well this would run RPG games such as Elder Scrolls Online? Thanks in advance

That's a pretty lightweight game when it comes to GPU use, so it should run just fine.

The G-sensor on this Rexing dual-channel rearview mirror camera system ensures that videos recorded during detected collisions are locked.

Do you install mirror front and rear dash cams

The front dash cam is integrated into the head unit that replaces your rearview mirror. The rear camera needs to be installed and connected to the head unit.

I'm planning on purchasing these headphones for my daughter, whose attending college. I have no idea what color she'd prefer and since it's a gift I don't plan on asking. Is one color preferred over the other?

I would think they'd be a little small for a college age young woman!
