Excellent PC per specs!! Full review. i7559GRY

This 15.6" Dell i7559 laptop machine rocks! I have built over a thousand PC's over the years and still enjoy building my own when needed but laptops are a different animal. In this case, I have to buy one someone else built... Erg!! I searched for months for the very best laptop in this price range with these features: i7 6700 Skylake, GTX960 4GB DDR5, touchscreen and backlit keyboard. RAM is just 8GB but I easily added another 8 with the available and easy to access slot. Getting to the RAM and HDD requires removing just one screw! Seriously...1 friggin screw and the whole laptop is open. I LOVE that! Also, it ships with a 1TB hybrid hard drive which is a good thing (and what I wanted) because many of them come with only a 250GB SSD. With this setup and the available M.2 slot, I put my own 512GB M.2 SSD in and left the 1TB hybrid drive in place for backup, game storage or whatever. I just mirrored the data from the included 1TB drive to the M.2 SSD, then set the laptop to boot to the MUCH MUCH faster M.2 SSD drive. Windows 10 now boots from power off to usable desktop in 10 seconds! This machine now scoots at a very quick pace and I have both big storage AND super fast SSD performance. Combine that with 16GB RAM, i7 6700HQ Processor AND 4GB of DDR5 on the fairly impressive Nvidia GTX960 dedicated gaming/graphics card and, considering the money I spent, I have just about as good a gaming, performance laptop that money can buy! Period. I looked on every conceivable laptop selling website on the planet. Nothing matched this in this price range. Nothing. Not Asus, Acer, Toshiba, HP or any of the less known custom built laptop sites such as Sager, CUK and many others. I looked!! To get this rig to 16GB RAM and add the 512GB SSD boot drive (and keep my 1TB drive internal), cost me under $200, took me about an hour to do and made this machine better, faster and as good for gaming as any laptop with similar specs costing $500-$1000 more than this one. Touchscreen, 6700 Skylake CPU, backlit KB and 960GTX w/ 4GB DDR5 video RAM for a grand is currently only achievable with this Dell machine. It IS a VERY nice laptop and now that I have it, it is clearly a good deal! Aesthetically, it is just ok but that was the absolute lowest priority item for me. With the flat gray color and the shiny black Dell logo, it actually looks pretty sexy yet masculine. I was actually quite pleasantly surprised by the rather sleek, premium feel and appearance but it didn't matter much because I was after numbers, pure and simple! If I was focused on pretty, I may have gone another direction. This i7559 laptop is about 1" thick (thin) which not TOO bad at all but is no Asus Zenbook or MacBook but it's NOT too far off. It's sure thinner than laptops of just a few years ago! It is thin enough for me and NOT too heavy like a reviewer complained about. I don't think many reviewers realize what they are getting with this machine, I DO, I looked at just about every option out there! I did not just stumble upon this laptop, I've had my eye on it for a while and as my search dragged out and expanded, I kept winding up back at this Dell and after a couple of months, I concluded that this WAS the best choice for what I wanted and I bought it from old reliable, Best Buy. About the excess weight: All 15.6" laptops with these features are a little weighty but this Dell is just not unacceptably heavy by any means but that is my opinion and everyone seems to have one! It DOES have the beautiful 4K display and boy is it pretty! Like an Apple Retina display but I am mixed on the 4K because some programs don't scale to this ultra high resolution (but most do). What that simply translates to is that programs that are NOT designed with 4K display support are SUPER tiny on the screen, ridiculously tiny...like a number 1 font and a tiny box for its screen when you open the affected program. It's a pain when it occurs but scaling for 4K displays is something Windows 10 is pretty good at and most software vendors have caught up or are catching up. It is possible to reduce the resolution momentarily if needed to increase the size of a non-scaling tiny Window but then you have a new set of issues such as giant icons. Anyhow, 4K is neat, real neat but it does come with its own set of new challenges. On that note, I did also try for all of these specs but without the 4K screen but for some reason, I was unable, in my extensive research, to find a laptop with ALL of my required specs but with just a standard HD screen (not UHD). Strange I know but quite true, I could not find one. My required specs were all of the items I listed and the GTX960 or above dedicated video with 4GB of DDR5, no 2GB and no DDR3 for video. Regarding the display, I've seen some comments on the screen brightness not being good. REALLY?? It looks very bright and very good and I'm used to Apple Retina displays and high end IPS panels. This screen looks marvelous! Not sure where people are coming from on this complaint! You probably don't want to use it outside in bright sunlight but I'm yet to see ANY laptop, PC, MAC or tablet computer of any kind work well in sunlight. That's the only thing I can think of that explains the lack of brightness complaints because my spoiled and fairly fussy eye thinks it is pretty darned good! For the record, I am NOT a Dell fanboy, in fact, I am not a fanboy of any mass produced computers of any kind. As stated, I make my own when I can but that's not so easy with laptops AND I have seen a few unsubstantiated (opinion) subpar reviews of this excellent valued laptop and just wanted to get my full, expert and knowledge backed review in. Also, for the record, I'm aware that this does come with DDR3 system RAM (not the video RAM) as opposed to some machines with newer DDR4 system RAM but since this has dedicated (not shared) 4GB DDR5 for video plus the Intel HD 530 onboard graphics to help drive the 4K display (yes, this thing has 2 actual video cards), I felt DDR3 system RAM was just fine and would not have a noticeable impact and thus far, it has not. Every game I have tried (about 15-20) and most are newest release shooters, runs perfectly fine. Some run better with the settings reduced a bit to improve frame rates but for a laptop it's pretty impressive the way the games look AND run! Sure a 980 or Titan would be better but this is GOOD! It's very good! I'm very happy with this, particularly after my little (big) upgrades! If you want a nice, reasonably (and super easy) upgradable laptop that IS very game and graphic capable, has the current Skylake i7, 4GB 960 DDR5, touchscreen and backlit keyboard, it is unlikely that you will be able to do better than this machine by today's standards. Oh, the battery life! Fairly good but I wasn't buying for best in class battery life. It runs at full steam for a few hours on battery and I suspect I could get a full day of basic use out of it but I just don't measure it or care much. I run it on AC mostly but when I need to go mobile for a few hours, I'm quite comfortable taking this thing out without the charger for a while and it doesn't let me down. Gaming at 4K does use battery, no denying that!

The Apple watch is a joke. What's the point of this thing? For one, I feel like Luke Skywalker with it on and besides it's rather useless except as a watch and I have nice watches for telling time. It is nice as a notifier for texts etc and to answer calls around the house when my phone is not with me but other than that, it is basically another useless gadget I need to charge everyday. I'm fine with my iPhone 6s Plus but the watch is too much and looks silly on a grown man if you ask me. It's a gimmick and I can't imagine this rubbish lasting. It is also just too thick and clunky looking and like I said, basically does nothing of any real use to me. It did track my steps! Woopee! These things are just so dang overrated! Or maybe they're not? I can't imagine that men of my age or even close to my age (50ish) wanting to wear this childish gadget. I gave it 3 stars because it is Apple and it is nicely made and the screen, buttons and functions are quite nice but ONLY 3 stars because it is just a useless gadget but I should have known that going in. Heck, I'm 50, I can barely read my iPhone 6s Plus screen, let alone a tiny Apple watch. Mine lasted about 2 weeks and I sold it to Chewbacca on eBay. What on earth is it that people like about these ludicrous devices? Someone, really, give me a real reason why anyone needs this thing? Heck, tell me why anyone wants one? I got mine for free and like I said I sold it to Chewy. What is even neat or cool about the Apple Watch? It looks goofy but vibrates when I have taken enough steps! Wow, awesome! I can change colors with over priced $40+ pieces of rubber. And how about the $15,000 gold watch? LMAO! It won't be worth its weight in gold next year. I just want to meet one person who actually paid 15 grand for a 1st gen smart watch that will be obsolete, well....yesterday! Anyhow, these things are a joke but I guess I am a bit of a Maverick around here because most reviewers seem to like this thing. I just don't get it. There is my lovely review.

Lame, no bass drum "hit" at all. Bad 4 rock music

Type of Listener:Audiophile
Most Important to Purchase:Sound quality
How Often Used:3-5 times a week
Too much treble, lacks any bass with punch even though people said otherwise. I used different tips, adjusted the heck out of them and all I got was a ridiculous abundance of highs. This is common with earbuds. I have tried many including offerings from Shure and Etymotic with similar results. I am not sure what people are hearing with these so called "good ear buds" but for heaven's sake, give me some good bass. Geez...
The only ones I have found that deliver are the new Bose in ears. Bose's ear fittings suck but with all of the extra earbuds I have, I replaced them with the ear pieces from a pair of Etymotics and it isolated the sound much better in my ear. The highs are nice and crisp and the bass is very satisfying. So far I have found nothing better than the lowly 100.00 Bose!
I returned the Dr. Dung (Dre) set. I will stick with Bose until something better for rock and roll finds it's way into my ears. I just wish Bose would come out with some better sound isolating tips than those silicone tips with the new "flap" that keeps it in your ear. The flap does help but a lot of good sound escapes due to the lack of seal (isolation). If I push them into my ears during playback the sound quality is improved by about 30 or 40 percent. That is why I changed the tips. Hell, this has turned into a Bose review! Sorry folks... To finish; don't waste your $$ on Dr. Dung!
What's great about it: Decent design and fit but not great
What's not so great: There is nothing great in my opinion. The sound sucks!

That's a review?
December 24, 2015
Clearly your purchase has a problem. That doesn't mean all of them are like that. I'm no ASUS fanboy but just because you got a bad one doesn't mean it is going to be a problem for anyone or everyone else. That is the essence of a review, your experience with the item and you sort of give an impression of a "global issue with this item". Your review sort of implies that I should reasonably expect that all of these items will fail like yours did. "Could not turn it on again". "Your call" was your comment. Our call is that you got a defective unit and your review leaves us with absolutely no idea of what the actual laptop is like. Return it, get a replacement and if this happens again or others regularly experience the same thing, then your actual review may have merit. If it is just an anomaly, do a real review of the laptop so people know about the item and NOT that you are simply bummed out because you got a lemon. That is why you are getting mostly thumbs down on your review.

Touchpads are ALL a pain! Get a BT mouse!
January 27, 2016
I think you are correct. Dell put very little stock into this touchpad, likely because they figured most users would be gaming or graphics enthusiast types and would use a mouse. That is my best solution. Only use a touchpad when you have no other option and get a suitable mouse. I've never used a touchpad I totally like, even Apple's! Nothing beats a mouse, period. It is a rare occasion that I am forced to use the touchpad. In bed and on airplanes, I have an iPad. Just about everywhere else is usually mouse friendly. I picked up the Tonor folding Bluetooth mouse for $14 and it is surprisingly good, almost shockingly so. It actually folds in half and powers on and off by closing and opening which is ideal. The battery life seems pretty good but then again, I've only had it for a couple of weeks. It is accurate and works just as well as my more expensive Logitechs which have tremendous (many months) battery life. I just needed a new mouse to pair with this machine and figured for 14 bucks, even if it sucks, so what! But...it doesn't suck! It works very well and I've already almost gotten my money's worth from it. We will see how long it lasts. As far as the touchpad, you can make adjustment to the pointer speed and scrolling to make it more to your liking in the mouse or touchpad software but I think we are stuck with the clunky clicking. If you don't like battery driven mice, get a USB mouse and you'll be fine. Good luck and thanks for the note and your nice words!

Is there a non-bulky 15.6" laptop?
January 27, 2016
MacBook Pro maybe but then, you've got a Mac! Pretty, yes very pretty but a Mac! Even then, it still has the same basic footprint as this Dell PC. A little thinner and a pound or two lighter but much more expensive, no touchscreen and does NOT match this I7559 in RAW horsepower. Bulky? I don't agree, it's just not bulky as 15.6" laptops WITH touch screens go and besides, it is way too much bang for the buck to moan about bulk.

Just OK
By Windowsnomore
I took a chance on this because I wanted a large all in one PC even though the reviews were mixed.
Love the screen but it's slow based on today's technology. You also hear the hard drive throughout. I thought I would be done with the blue screen of death with Windows but I guess that's still around, even with Windows 10.
As you can tell, I returned this and went with the iMac. First time owning Apple PC. Still adjusting but don't hear the HDD or had to reboot to get out of lock up. And it's so much faster. I highly recommend your next computer has an SSD drive. So much quicker.

5400 RPM HD = SLOW - Come on folks!
February 29, 2016
First to HP: SSD HP! SSD!!! WTF are you thinking! A 250GB SSD is as cheap as the lousy 5400 drive in this box and would make you look soooooo much better, sure lower storage but waaaaaay faster and just look at all of the complaints about speed. Hmm! Customer: The first move should be an SSD and removal of all bloatware and unnecessary startup items and the machine will blaze! Simple as that. Use the included regular drive as a USB drive with an enclosure or a secondary drive, not sure if you can do more than one drive on this on this machine but that's what I would do if I could. Either way, get rid of the slow spindle based drive and get an SSD! It's the biggest no brainer in the history of personal computers.

Backlit Keyboard - Asus ZX50VW-BHI7N10

Backlit key board stays on even after I turn this laptop off. Any suggestions or perhaps experiences to help resolve this issue? Thank You in advance.
Pour water on it. That will put the light out for good! On a more serious note: If the KB back light is staying on, then the laptop is NOT off. Push and hold the power button until the unit completely shuts off and ALL lights go out. A normal shut down of Windows should power the unit and all lights off also. There is also a button(s) (usually used in tandem with the fn button) that controls the KB back light. If none of this works, return the unit, there is a problem (or refer to the water trick).
