Dragon Age: Origins just ascended to my number two slot for games.
(Number one is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which happens to be untoppable)
The game thrusts you into the massive world of Ferelden. It has many locations that vary from towers to castles to mountians to villiages. Of course, if you don't like the map, you can add your own content with the downloadable toolset (which is a bit too complex to jump right in...)
However, the main storyline of the game will keep you occupied for over 50 hours. If you do every side quest you come across (and there is a multitude of those) gameplay can well exceed 100 hours. Some side quests are mini series, with completion of the first unlocking the next. As of this review, I have done some (about half) of the side quests and 75 percent of the main quest and have 73 hours of gameplay. Of course that is with one character...
The best part of this game is the "origins story" of the characters. There are three playable races: humans, elves, and dwarfs. You can choose to be male or female, pick from three different classes, and then an "origins story." This is a prequel to the main game and adds varience to replays before taking up the main quest. NPCs also react differently to different classes and races, but it doesn't really influence gameplay. They basically say "Didn't expect to see an <insert race here>!"
Your companions add another level of depth with romances, additional side quests, and they react to your every choice. If you do something they very much oppose, they may leave your party or attack you. But if you did something they liked, thier feelings towards you increase, and they gain minor status bonuses for liking you enough.
Combat is strategy based. You will not get very far running in with your soldier and hacking away at everything. You have to use your abilities wisely, maybe paralizing the frontline, then taking out the archers and mage with one character, while keeping the frontline busy with another. Playing the game is the best way to develop this strategy...
Overall, go buy the game. Just go do it now. Why are you still reading this? BUY THE GAME!!!
What's great about it: Depth, length, gameplay, customization
What's not so great: Toolset (but that's a different program for making mods)
I would recommend this to a friend!
