MGM often does a great job with their horror catalog titles and their DVD of Squirm is a great example of this tendency in action. The letterboxed, anamorphic video transfer looks fantastic, offering rich color and a razor-sharp level of detail. Even the dimly-lit night scenes are clear on this transfer. The audio portion of the disc sticks to the original mono mix, but it's a strong mix that uses the film's synthesizer-laced score to potent effect. In terms of extras, there is a pair of trailers (a theatrical spot and a TV spot) and a commentary track from writer/director Jeff Lieberman. The commentary is a fantastic one in which Lieberman discusses his inspirations, tells casting stories, reveals how they pulled off the film's effects sequences, and outlines all manner of details about his choices as a writer and a director. The end result is a witty, fast-paced track that is both entertaining and revealing. In short, the combination of a great transfer and an excellent commentary makes Squirm a sure bet for horror lovers.
