An Excellent Show For People Of All Ages
on May 31, 2013

Home Improvement is an excellent show for people of any age to watch. I watched it when I was little and enjoyed it very much, and having grown up I would say it's even better because there are more things you'll be able to pick up and relate to.
What was great about this season in particular is everyone has grown up and they don't try to play that down. The Taylor kids now have more responsibilities to deal with such as their relationships, and Tim and Jill Taylor have to deal with the issues adults face with their health as well as keeping their marriage alive. These episodes have great morals and lessons but they don't come across as preachy at all. What's especially great is there is no bad episode in this set!
Unfortunately there are very few bonus features. You do get a set of bloopers to watch and they are good, but I don't think it's a bonus feature that you'll be watching over and over.
This is great family entertainment. If you're an adult you'll be able to watch this show with your children and enjoy it without having to worry if it's inappropriate. Gather the whole family around and get ready to laugh as you watch. Highly recommended.
My Best Buy number: 2183363019
What's great about it: Very funny, great stories, deals with real life issues
What's not so great: Very few bonus features
I would recommend this to a friend!

Excellent Follow Up To Batman The Animated Series
on May 29, 2013

When Batman Beyond first came on air I didn't think it would be all that great. To me Bruce Wayne would always be Batman and I didn't see how you could have it any other way. Then I got the DVDs and I saw how wrong I was!
If you're a fan of Batman The Animated series I think you will really like this. It takes place years after when Bruce Wayne is elderly and has retired as Batman. But he becomes a mentor to someone else who takes up the Batman mantle and it works out very well. You will get some visits from some other familiar Batman characters such as the villains, and that is a real treat.
I would recommend most of these episodes. Out Of The Past is especially one of my favorites, and if you're a fan of Batman The Animated series I'm sure you'll like it too. You can't go wrong with most of these episodes. They made Batman Beyond something new but did a good job paying tribute to the old Batman.
The extras are very nice with Bruce Timm and Paul Dini being interviewed, as well as there being informative and interesting commentaries. T
here are only two negatives to this set It comes with a bonus disc that has the documentary Secret Origins on it. This documentary deals with the history of Detective Comics, but the problem is it doesn't have as much detail as it should. You'll have to read some books or do some research on the internet if you want to learn more about the history of Detective Comics. The other negative is it doesn't include the movie Batman Beyond Return Of The Joker, which is indeed tied to this series. So you get every single episode of the TV series here, but you'll need to buy Return Of The Joker separately, which is well worth it.
Batman Beyond was an excellent follow up to the fantastic Batman The Animated Series. I wish Batman Beyond got better closure than it did with the final episode on this set and the Justice League episode Epilogue, but by no means should the ending keep you from buying this set. Bruce Timm and Paul Dini were an excellent team and we have them to thank for this interesting direction they took Batman in. I highly recommend this set.
My Best Buy number: 2183363019
What's great about it: A new spin on Batman that will still be enjoyable to Batman fans of old
What's not so great: It needed better closure

A Great Set For One Of The Greatest Soap Operas
on May 29, 2013

Dark Shadows in my opinion is the best soap opera ever. The episodes aren't quite a half hour but in that time they had excellent character and plot development that these days you can't get in a 1 hour length episode of a soap opera. There are times where it may seem a little cheesy, but there's a coolness factor to Dark Shadows that will have you overlooking that.
Every episode of the original series is here and has been restored as best as they could. Keep in mind that when they were making these that there really was no home video market, so we're fortunate to have every episode, albeit 1 in telesnap form, looking as good as they do. Perhaps you are familiar with the character Barnabas Collins. If you watch these episodes from the beginning you won't find him because he doesn't show up until later in the series. Still, I would recommend watching from episode 1 and working your way to the end.
There are nice extras, including introductions, bloopers, and out takes. It's worth noting to fans that want to own everything that the only way to get some of the out takes is by buying this set, since some of them aren't included in the individual sets.
The price may seem high for this set, but you need to consider what you're getting. Over 100 discs filled with all of the episodes and special features adds up to taking at least a year to watch it all. With many DVD sets you can get through it all in a weekend, but with this it is pretty much guaranteed to give you at least a year of something to watch. It's very cost effective when you break down how much it costs per episode, and if you consider how much it would cost if you bought the volume sets individually. The booklet that comes with this set is also a nice addition.
The only bad thing I have to say about this set is that the packaging isn't quite convenient. The discs are in regular DVD cases that hold multiple discs. These cases are then lined up in the coffin packaging to form an image of Barnabas. While the packaging physically looks cool and it does do a good job storing these DVDs, it can be a bit heavy if you haul it around. It would also take up a lot of space because the coffin is too large to fit on pretty much anything but the top of a shelf. I recommend that you display the coffin packaging somewhere, but take the individual cases out and put them on your shelf. It'll be easier to access your episodes and they'll still look good next to each other.
If you want a soap opera that develops its characters and stories well and has supernatural elements to it, I suggest you get this set. There's never quite been anything like Dark Shadows and I think it makes for great marathon viewing. Don't let the price discourage you. Take into account all you get, start saving if you don't have the money yet, and then buy and enjoy. I highly recommend it.

What's great about it: Every episode of the original series together
What's not so great: The packaging while cool is a little inconvienent

A Cost Effective Way To Own Every Season
on May 29, 2013

Married With Children is one of the funniest and most outrageous shows ever. Though this show started in the late 1980's Ed O'Neil's Al Bundy is still as iconic as ever and very little if anything feels dated about this show.
You could buy every season individually, but this is a more cost effective way to own the whole series. The discs come packaged in a sort of spindle, so the discs sit on top of each other. I know that to some this packaging may turn them off, but if you're careful with the DVDs they won't get scratched up. It's worth getting it this way to save all the money and space on your DVD shelf.
While I can't say enough about how great the show is, there is a little bad news. The theme song, "Love And Marriage" by Frank Sinatra isn't included on all seasons because of a rights issue. Instead later seasons have an instrumental song that sounds a little bit like "Love And Marriage". I certainly would have preferred that every episode be like how it originally aired on TV, but the issue of the theme song isn't a deal breaker for me. Some other music is edited, such as a Beastie Boys song being replaced by somewhat similar music, but edits like these are very few. Very little footage has been edited out, but according to Sony this is because the prints that they had weren't in good enough condition. I would say 99% of the episodes are in their original broadcast version though. Last but not least on the slightly negative side, there aren't many bonus features on this set, though the reunion special on the first season makes up for this because it's so good.
Is this set perfect? No, but it comes pretty close. You get everything here that you would if you bought all the seasons separately, only the packaging is different. The very few drawbacks that there are in my opinion are outweighed by every episode being here in mostly complete form, and costing less than if you buy the individual season sets. Do your wallet and yourself a favor and buy this set. I highly recommend it.

What's great about it: All of these characters are hilarious and this may be the most outrageous show ever
What's not so great: Not every season has the original theme song, some episodes have edits, there aren't a lot of extras

Follow the remarkable lifespan of a wrestling organization that changed the face of sports entertainment in this hard-hitting documentary featuring such formidable brawlers as Sabu, Bam Bam Bigelow, and Rey Mysterio Jr. It was during ECW's remarkable run in the 1990s that wrestling fans truly began to realize the extremes that these remarkable athletes would go to in order to win over an audience, and as the stakes grew increasingly high the action in the ring became ever more outrageous. If the WWF had an edge in terms of brand name recognition, the ECW did virtually everything imaginable to gain an edge over the competition - and though when all was said and done it may not have been quite enough, it was certainly a hell of a fun ride getting there.

A Must Have DVD For Wrestling Fans

If you were a hardcore fan of the original ECW then chances are you already have this DVD. If not you owe it to yourself to get it. If you aren't familiar with the original ECW then I would still recommend that you check this DVD out. You'll be in for a lot of great information and matches!
The documentary that is on the first disc in this set is very good. It's almost three hours long and it has very honest comments from Paul Heyman, former ECW talent, Vince McMahon, and Eric Bischoff. The only drawback is some wrestlers such as Raven weren't interviewed for this documentary because they were working for other wrestling promotions at the time.
The match selection on disc two is excellent and will give you a great idea of how entertaining ECW was. And while there are hardcore matches on this set there are also matches that showcase ECW's non-hardcore moments. Many people think ECW was just blood and steel chairs, but while there is plenty of that you will see that ECW had a variety of wrestlers such as the late Eddie Guerrero.
Do keep in mind that the original ECW was for mature audiences. I wouldn't recommend this for younger wrestling fans, but more for adult audiences like the TVMA rating suggests. Keeping the appropriate age group in mind I highly recommend this DVD.
My Best Buy number: 2183363019
What's great about it: A detailed account of the history of ECW and a great match selection
What's not so great: There are some ECW stars that should have been interviewed but weren't

Now This Is How You Bring A Great Show Back!
on May 26, 2013

Doctor Who quit having new episodes in 1989 and after the television movie in the 90's it's future wasn't looking all that great. When Doctor Who came back in 2005 it would either mean the rebirth of Whomania on television or the end of the program. Thankfully this season turned out to be great and as a result we have an excellent series that is still going to this day.
This is called The Complete First Series, but that is because Doctor Who hadn't been new for so long that to many this was their first experience of Doctor Who. It shares the continuity of the classic Doctor Who series and they do a good job remembering their history, but rest assured that you don't need to have seen any classic Doctor Who to understand and enjoy this.
This series does a great job of modernizing Doctor Who. Where as some of the sets from classic Doctor Who were a bit wobbly and fake looking, everything looks more realistic here. The sets are better and they also make good use of filming at real locations.
While the classic Doctor Who stories were often good the stories on this set have a bit more depth to them. Is every single story here excellent? No, some of them are cheesy and the classic Doctor Who serials with wobbly sets and styrofoam monsters can be taken more seriously at times. But the episodes in this set that aren't good are few and far between. There's a lot of great writing here.
The special features are very good and give you an idea of what it was like to bring back a beloved show that had been off the air for quite a while. I would recommend watching all of the special features on all five discs, but do so after having watched all the episodes so you'll avoid spoilers.
I have to say that the packaging for this set in wonderful. Originally it was released in bigger packaging that would take up more room on your shelf, but the version out now is so much better because it fits all five DVDs in a regular sized DVD case. This saves shelf space and it looks so much better when you put it next to the classic Doctor Who DVDs.
This set will appeal to people who have been fans of Doctor Who since the 60's as well as a new generation of people who haven't seen a single episode. There is no better way to get into Doctor Who in my opinion than starting with this. Be warned though, once you start watching Doctor Who you will likely get hooked! Highly recommended!
My Best Buy number: 2183363019
What's great about it: The stories, the acting, being a great way to introduce someone to Doctor Who, and the packaging
What's not so great: Some episodes are a little cheesy

A Good Doctor Who Story, Though Not Quite Complete
on May 26, 2013

Shada is a Tom Baker Doctor Who serial that never completed filming because there was a strike. What is on this DVD is the footage that they did film linked up with Tom Baker giving narration for the footage that was not filmed. While this is helpful and makes for an overall enjoyable experience, at times it feels like Tom Baker is telling you a story rather than acting in it. With that said the story is enjoyable.
Another version of Shada is on disc 1, but to get to that version you'll have to put the DVD in the computer and play the flash file. Paul McGann who played The Doctor in Doctor Who: The Movie is The Doctor in this version of Shada instead of Tom Baker. It isn't live action like the Tom Baker version, but instead animated. It's a shame that this isn't playable on a regular DVD or Blu-Ray player, but at least it's included.
On disc 2 is a nice documentary called More Than 30 Years In The T.A.R.D.I.S. This documentary features those that acted in the Doctor Who serials as well as the two Doctor Who movies Hammer Studios put out, and it gives you a nice history of how things were on and off the screen and the cultural impact Doctor Who had.
In a way I think of this set as more of a big bonus feature set than a complete Doctor Who story. You're not going to get the full story of the Tom Baker version of Shada since it doesn't exist, between this version with linking narration and the flash video version of Paul McGann's Shada you get as complete of a version as you can get. As long as you understand that and if you want to complete your Doctor Who collection, I would recommend getting this.
My Best Buy number: 2183363019
What's great about it: Tom Baker plays The Doctor well as usual
What's not so great: Tom Baker's version of Shada isn't quite complete and Paul McGann's version can only be viewed on a computer

One Of The Best Classic Doctor Who Serials
on May 26, 2013

If you are a fan of the current Doctor Who with Matt Smith I think you would enjoy this. The Cybermen that this version of The Doctor encounters aren't as advanced as they are in the new episodes, but that's to be expected since this came out so long ago. However, Patrick Troughton who plays this version of The Doctor does remind me a lot of Matt Smith, and like the Matt Smith episodes of Doctor Who this is a great adventure story.
If you are a fan of adventures and archeology movies I think you would really enjoy this. The special features on this DVD even talk about how one of the writers of this serial was a big fan of archeology and the effect that had on this story.
The special features are good and given how much you get its easy to see why this is a two disc DVD set. However, I don't think I'd be going back to this DVD just to rewatch the special features. For the story itself though this DVD is absolutely worth watching.
Before I end this review I would like to make a note about the video quality. Tomb Of The Cybermen was made with both film and video. There are times such as when characters are outside that it will look like you're watching a movie, but most of the time it will look like what you're watching will have a video look to it. That's exactly how it is supposed to look, so don't get alarmed. There is even a special feature that explains how they used a process to restore the image to its video form. I personally prefer when the video looks like film, but rest assured that this is how Tomb Of The Cybermen is supposed to look.
This is definitely in the top 5 of my favorite classic Doctor Who serials. Fans of the classic Doctor Who need to have this in their collection. Fans of the new Doctor Who that want to explore The Doctor's roots should definitely give this a look, as I think its the perfect middle ground between old and new Doctor Who. I highly recommend this special edition of Tomb Of The Cybermen.
My Best Buy number: 2183363019
What's great about it: An exciting adventure story with one of The Doctor's greatest enemies
What's not so great: While the special features are good I don't think there's a ton of replay value for them

Great For Film Noir And Comic Fans!
on May 26, 2013

If you are a fan of film noir or comics this is a great movie for you. This movie wasn't based on the Frank Miller Sin City comics, but Frank Miller himself was one of the directors. In my opinion no other comic book movie has been as loyal to its source material.
This movie has several stories in it and not one of them is bad. Each of the stories is pretty violent and gritty, but they have a dark sense of humor to them too. With that said, this is an adults only movie.
The plot and characters are all very interesting. The makeup that they used on Mickey Rourke to make him into his character is incredible and its puzzling how Sin City didn't get an Oscar for best makeup on that alone. This movie also has a great distinct look to it. While most of it is in black and white, there is use of color for some characters and other things the filmmakers wanted to draw attention to. This is one of the best looking Blu-Rays in my opinion and if you have an HDTV to watch this on I doubt you will disagree.
The extras are excellent and really give you an idea of what went into making the movie. All three commentary tracks are worth listening to, whether you're a fan of the movie or if you have an interest in making movies. The second disc has all of the stories in the movie in their extended form and you can watch them individually. The extended content isn't much longer than the theatrical version of the movie on the first disc, but it's interesting stuff to watch.
I think this is a great example of what a Blu-Ray should be. The movie looks beautiful and the sound is excellent. There aren't any throw away special features either. Everything on both of these discs is worth watching, and believe me this is a movie to keep rewatching. I highly recommend Sin City on Blu-Ray.
My Best Buy number: 2183363019
What's great about it: Great plot and characters
What's not so great: There's nothing bad about it
