Great Camera with a Few Surpirises

The Nikon D7000 was my first modern Nikon, and I was so impressed by the camera's abilities that I sold my entire collection of Canon equipment without any hesitation. I am not going to repeat all the accolades that you've no doubt already read about which make the D7100 a very solid performer. Here are just a few negative aspects of the D7100 that I did not expect. 1) I grew up using solid metal cameras, today they're called antiques, but in my opinion there is something about the Multi-Selector on the rear of the D7100 that makes it feel much cheaper than the D7000. 2) Light Room 4.4 tethered capture works quite well with the D7000, however surprise surprise surprise; the D7100 is not supported. 3) The last unexpected fact, I think you need to be aware of, is that the USB cable is not the same for the two cameras. The D7000 uses part number UC-E4 and the D7100 is supplied with UC-E6. They are not interchangeable. To be honest none of these would have changed my decision, but I had read every review that I could find on the internet and yet I was still surprised by these unexpected facts.
Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Standard Lens: Suitable for professional and amateur photographers, this is a great lens for travel, events, portraits and general purpose photography. Capture clear images in dim lighting without a flash with the wide-open aperture. Switch seamlessly from automatic to fine manual focusing so you can ensure every detail is spot on.

Here is what I like about the Nikon 50mm 1.4 lens: It is short and light to carry. It looks great on my D7000. The manual focusing ring is smooth and the long travel allows for very easy, fine focusing adjustments. The Auto/Manual focus switch works well. This lens is as sharp as anything else I have ever owned. (but not at f1.4)
Here is what I am not so happy with: The lens is the slowest to achieve auto focus I have ever owned. Images taken at f1.4 look like I had some kind of medium strength “soft focus” filter on the lens.
Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16–85mm f/3.5–5.6G ED VR Standard Zoom Lens: Shoot any subject, any setting with this versatile Nikon standard zoom lens. Distinguished by its incredible sharpness, steady handheld shooting and broad zoom range, this lens offers all-around performance and remarkably wide coverage for everything from portraits to landscapes to travel and architecture.

High Quality in every way, but a little heavy.

Here is what I like about the Nikon 16-85 lens: It is a bit smaller than I thought it would be. The zoom ring is very very stiff to turn, no chance of “lens creep” and that’s good. Manual focus is nice and smooth, and the 3 switches work well. Zooming in and out is beautiful; this is a great lens for a wide variety of subjects. Portraits at 85mm are super sharp. And I love to create awesome wide angle shots at 16mm too. Focusing is fast and quiet.
Here is what I am not so happy with: The lens is much heavier than it looks. This is not a deal breaker but it is a heavy lens for its size. At 16mm it is so hard to focus manually. I have no choice but to use the auto focus.
What's great about it: Feels Solid
What's not so great: Heavy and Pricey unless you catch a sale
Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70–300mm f/4.5–5.6G IF-ED Telephoto Zoom Lens: Leave the tripod at home and create stunning still images and HD videos from any distance with this Nikon telephoto zoom lens. The versatile focal length allows you to capture intricately detailed photos of sports events, wildlife and distant scenery. Vibration reduction technology reduces blur caused by camera shake for crystal clear handheld photos and action shots.

70-300mm OMG

After much research I decided on the Nikon 70-300; From the moment I first installed this beauty on to my D7000 I was in love. Then I downloaded some images I had taken to my computer and the honeymoon was over. I could not live with the left side of the frame always out of focus. And I mean way out of focus. If I stop down to f22 it was better, but that is not always possible so I returned the lens ASAP. I remember many years ago when the love of my life had dumped me for someone else, the feeling I had then, had now returned. I wanted this lens bad so I took a chance and purchased another one at my local Best Buy. This second purchase of this lens provided me with much better image quality than the first. It focuses evenly, edge to edge. It’s not as sharp as my best prime but hay, it’s a big fat long zoom and I like it.
What's great about it: 70-300mm
What's not so great: The first one I purchased sucked.
