NickyR's Reviews

Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington star as a law school student and a determined investigative journalist on the trail of the killer of two Supreme Court justices in this riveting political thriller, arriving on DVD from Warner Home Video. With a variety of video and audio options, this disc offers viewing in the original 2.35:1 widescreen theatrical aspect ratio (enhanced for widescreen TVs) as well as the standard, 1.33:1 full-screen pan-and-scan presentation option. Audio is presented in closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1, in addition to Spanish and French Dolby Digital Surround with optional English, Spanish, and French subtitles. A fairly bare-bones disc, production notes are the only extra feature offered, aside from the standard interactive menus and scene access.

Gary Fleder's adaptation of Kiss the Girls comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a second English soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. Spanish subtitles are accessible, and both English soundtracks are closed-captioned. Supplemental materials include a theatrical trailer. This disc has strong sound and the picture is sharp. Genre enthusiasts will get a kick out of this disc, but there are not enough special features to make this disc interesting to people turned off by serial killer films.

Wesley Snipes stars as a determined detective on the trail of a killer after a murder is committed in the White House in this taut and chilling mystery, arriving on DVD from Warner Home Video. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen (enhanced for widescreen TVs), and featuring a closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack in addition to an alternate French Dolby Digital Surround track, this release offers optional subtitles in English, Spanish, and French. Extra features include production notes and a theatrical trailer.

Christian Duguay's action thriller Art of War comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials are limited to a theatrical trailer. While this disc does a spectacular job of presenting the film, the lack of extras makes it an object of interest for only those who are curious about the film itself.

Eddie Murphy's directorial debut Harlem Nights comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include the theatrical trailer. This is a solid Paramount release that offers solid picture and sound quality, but little else.
