Is/Has vinyl making a comeback?
I have just noticed that Best Buy sells vinyl, and there are quite a few on this site. Wondering if it is or has made a comeback?
It has made a comeback, although it is still a niche format. It will never again be the mainstreem method of music listening. I believe 2-3 million new vinyl LPs were sold last year. It is a decent sum but only a very small percentage of total music sales (cds/digital)
I did not grow up with vinyl, the time had past before my venture into music. I had always heard vinyl had that certain sound that many preferred to CD. A new album from my favorite band was released on vinyl in 2008 so I decided to give it a try. Since then, I no longer have a CD player hooked up to my stereo. I won't get into whether is sounds better or worse, but it does sound different, and I prefer that sound. It is also a much more tangible way of listening to music. The listener is more involved and it is more inviting. As such, I have not listened to music this much since I was a young lad.
With that said, it is not for everyone. It is the most expensive way to listen to music combined with the least convienent way to listen to music. I enjoy placing the stylus on the record, getting up to turn the record, trying different cartridges/styli to tweak the sound, etc. But for many, that is an annoyance. You also have to invest a decent sum on a good turntable and a good cartridge in order to hear the benefits of vinyl. The cheap plastic turntables that are often sold are junk, and you're better off staying with a digital format. Much research on turntables/cartidges is also required to make sure you get the benefit of vinyl. Not to mention vinyl itself costs more than CDs/downloads.
