This version of Charles Dickens' classic tale is by far the best. I personally recommend the previous dvd incarnation over this particular dvd due to the new-high def restoration. For some reason, I have found that many recent high-def restorations of old black & white films turn out rather poorly due to overlighting the film element in order to bring out definition, and in doing so, ruins the original intended cinematography. However, don't let the high-def restoration deter you from buying this masterpiece if you don't have it already. Also beware the incorrectly altered widescreen version available on this disc (this film was originally shot and shown in theaters with a 1.37:1 full-screen aspect ratio, and a theatrically incorrect widescreen version has been included here to cater to fans of the widescreen format.).

I firmly believe that every person needs to see this film regardless of who they are. Easily one of the greatest films ever made, it clearly deserves the recognition it earned over the years. It is hard to believe that this film was deemed both a critical and box office disappointment when it was initially released. There are several dvd versions that have been released over the years, my personal preference for picture quality is the 1998 Republic Pictures version, but any of the more recent versions are fine too, as they almost all contain the same bonus features as the original disc. Whatever you do, only watch the film in its original black & white, the colorized versions have been awful!"

This is a good dvd release to a fairy-tale film that could have been so much better. Openly accepting much of the blame, was Ridley Scott for his uncertainty on how to cut the film. This single disc version is the director's cut only, and while it's good, drops most of the bonus features that appeared on the 2-disc ultimate edition. Big fans will want the 2-disc.
Paul Brickman's Risky Business has had a large cult following since its original 1983 release. The film comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround, while a Spanish soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Mono. Subtitles for each of those three languages are accessible. Supplemental materials include production notes and theatrical trailers. This DVD was released in the early days of the format. The possibility exists for a deluxe treatment somewhere down the road, something Tom Cruise's many fans would appreciate.

'Risky Business' isn't a 'great' movie in any sense of the word, but it's watchable and it does have some good comedic moments. This dvd offers the film in both widescreen and full-screen, but is sparse on extras.
'Raiders of the Lost Ark' is good action-adventure entertainment that will most likely please fans of the genre. This is the only film of the series worth the buy for fans of the film. Considering this new release has a few new extras, but nothing big, it's probably not worth a double-dip for those who already own the box set, especially considering this is the exact same transfer that was on the previous dvd version.
Fans of The Monster Squad will be delighted with the treatment it has received on this double-disc set from Lionsgate. The film benefits from a crisp anamorphic transfer that shows off the film's carefully-lensed scope photography in all its multitextured glory. The lovely transfer is complemented by a strong audio presence, with the film presented in both 2.0 and 5.1 stereo sound mixes. Those with a good stereo system will want to opt for the latter as it adds extra heft to the music and some key sound effects. This set also includes a barrage of extras created with the hardcore fan in mind. The first disc contains two commentary tracks, the first pairing director Fred Dekker with actors Andre Gower, Ryan Lambert, and Ashley Bank and the second pairing Dekker with cinematographer Bradford May. The first track is more lighthearted and the second track is more technical in nature but both are worth a listen for fans and offer plenty of interesting anecdotes about the shoot. The fun continues on the second disc, which offers deleted scenes, trailers, an extensive image gallery, an amusing on-set interview with actor Tom Noonan staying in character as Frankenstein and an animated storyboard feature depicting the Squad's battle with the Mummy. However, the true centerpiece of the second disc is "Monster Squad Forever," an 88-minute documentary produced by Michael Felsher for this set. It covers all angles of the film from conception to reception via interviews with several cast and crew members and is an entertaining, well-assembled piece of work. Simply put, the combination of an excellent transfer and copious, lovingly-crafted extras makes this special edition of The Monster Squad a must for fans of the film and anyone who enjoys classic horror (especially that of the 1980's variety).

'The Monster Squad' is a terribly stupid film that will most likely only be enjoyed by kids under the age of 10. It is completely undeserving of the high quality special edition treatment it has received here on this dvd, and right now, just off the top of my head, I could think of about a couple dozen films that are far superior to this film, that have received no special edition attention whatsoever. All that aside, this is an exceptional dvd release that fans of this piece of junk movie are sure to delight in.
This film, though probably completely undeserving of a dvd in any sense, is sure to be enjoyed by that small cult of people who think the movie is great. In all honesty, it's actually so bad, it's not even worth watching, which I learned quickly after just one viewing. The dvd quality is exceptional though considering the quality of the film, and does offer some good bonus features for fans of the film, the only ones to whom I'd recommend buying this item.
Frank Darabont's critically acclaimed, quietly popular 1994 debut The Shawshank Redemption comes to DVD in a simple presentation that features a widescreen, anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio, a stills gallery, and the theatrical trailer. With an understated, well-crafted film like this one, the focus should be on the finished work, but a Darabont commentary, filmography, "making of" featurette, and other extra features would make a nice counterpart to the film's restraint. Hopefully, Warner Home Video will see fit to release a deluxe version of The Shawshank Redemption that gives the film the treatment it deserves.

I don't understand all the hype and support around this film. Yes, it's decent entertainment, but I feel that for such a serious movie, its completely unbelievable story, particularly the end of the film, hinders its overall impact. Other than that, this is a good dvd release for fans of the film.

this full-screen dvd version alters the original theatrical aspect ratios of the movies from 2.35:1 to 1.33:1, giving a picture in which you lose almost 50% of the image on each side. Buy the widescreen version instead!"
It was just sad to see Stallone in this film. While watching this movie, all I kept thinking of was how much I liked the first couple of 'Rambo' films, and how much fun they were to watch. I couldn't believe what a piece of junk this movie was and I wouldn't bother wasting my time seeing it if I were you, let alone buy it. Also, this full-screen version has been considerably cropped from the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1 down to 1.33:1, so basically you lose almost 50% of the image in every scene. If you really have to buy this one, at least waste your money on the widescreen version.
