Michael Ritchie directed Eddie Murphy in the fantasy-adventure The Golden Child, which comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the orignal theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Mono. There are no subtitles, but both English soundtracks are closed-captioned. Supplemental materials are limited to theatrical trailers. The picture and sound quality on this Paramount release are both quite good, but the lack of extras make it difficult to swallow the high list price.

Typical Eddie Murphy

An interesting and somewhat mythological and mystical storyline is the real star of this film. Eddie Murphy is his typical self, not really offering up much to make the picture top-notch entertainment. This film probably would have been better had it had a more serious tone to it.

Adam Sandler's gridiron comedy The Waterboy comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. There are no subtitles on this release. Supplemental materials are limited to a pedestrian production featurette and a theatrical trailer. Fans of Sandler's comedic style will be thrilled with this disc, but there is nothing compelling about it for anyone else.

Not Sandler's Best, But Enjoyable
on April 16, 2008

'Waterboy' is just another typical Adam Sandler movie with him playing the same type of character audiences love to see him as. Not his best film, but still loaded with some really funny material, this one is at least worth one viewing. The dvd itelf, featuring a shoddy letterbox widescreen transfer, could have been much better.

Typical Adam Sandler

More of Adam Sandler playing the usual childish and idiotic characters he has come to be typecast as. Overall, a funny movie and decent special edition dvd.

Laughably Stupid Comedy
on April 16, 2008

In his first major theatrical debut, Adam Sandler is at his wisecracking best as an idiotic and childish adult who decides he wants to go back to grade school to prove to his rich father he has what it takes to run the family company. This special edition is pretty good with a decent commentary and several sought after deleted scenes.

A strange disappearance leaves a young boy with vast knowledge of the universe in Disney DVD's release of the children's sci-fi classic Flight of the Navigator. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and offering audio in English Dolby Digital Surround, this release also offers optional French and Spanish subtitles. Unfortunately, this disc does not include any bonus features whatsoever.

Great for the Kids

A good kids movie, 'Flight of the Navigator' is not what I would consider an outstanding film, but it is good and will most likely captivate children under the age of 12.

Dan Aykroyd's comedy-horror spoof Nothing but Trouble comes to DVD with a standard full-frame transfer that fails to reproduce the original theatrical aspect ratio. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. There are no subtitles, but the soundtrack is closed-captioned. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence. This is a substandard disc from Warner Bros. that shows little effort on their part.

Great Cast, Movie Should Have Been Better
on April 16, 2008

'Nothing But Trouble' had incredible potential to be a top-notch comedy. One may ask what happened then? Truth is, I don't know but it just came up short. However, for all its weaknesses, 'Nothing But Trouble' still has some good scenes although I would only recommend this movie, or dvd for that matter, to die-hard fans of the cast in this film.

Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd star in the comedy Spies Like Us. Warner has put forth an only halfhearted attempt at making sure this transfer looks as good as possible. The film is presented in a cropped 1.33:1 full-frame transfer with all the imperfections of a pan-and-scan feature: dirt, grain, and a softness in the image that is often intrusive. While some of the colors and black levels appear in decent shape, others are soft or display bleeding in the image. Overall this is a very lackluster transfer to what some consider a classic comedy from the 1980s. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround and doesn't offer much in the way of fidelity or dynamic range. While the mix is clear of any excessive hiss or distortion, not a single directional effect is to be found on this audio track. No alternate subtitles or soundtracks are available on this disc. Sadly, fans are stuck with a completely bare-bones edition of this film -- not even a single theatrical trailer has been tacked onto this DVD.

Yet Another Great Movie, but Bad dvd
on April 16, 2008

'Spies Like Us' is hilarious entertainment and well worth a viewing if you've never seen it. However, buying this dvd is another story as its presentation is lackluster at best, featuring full-screen VHS-like picture and no bonus features whatsoever.

Chevy Chase's Best Performance

'Fletch' is a great comedy and definitely Chevy Chase's best screen performance. The special edition dvd itself is not quite as stellar, and could have been much better.

The 1985 action comedy Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins comes to DVD from MGM with a standard full-screen transfer. Dolby Digital Stereo is available in English with optional subtitles in English, Spanish, and French. Special features include the original theatrical trailer.

A Cult-Classic Gem

This is one of those films that will appeal only to select appetites, but generally speaking, those who like this film tend to consider it tops on their list. A great B-movie in every sense, directed by the late Guy Hamilton (of James Bond fame), 'Remo' is just a fun action movie to watch, with several good performances and some great stunt sequences, add in the well written dialogue and exceptional comic relief and you've got a great movie in my opinion!
The dvd itself presents a decent full-screen image only (no widescreen), but considering the film was shot 'matted' widescreen anyway, you don't lose any picture with the full-screen version. In fact, you actually get more picture than you're supposed to in most scenes (just watch the scene where Remo is doing his balance-beam sequence in Chiun's apartment, you can see the harness wires the stuntman has attached to him). This movie is well worth the buy for die-hard fans as 'Remo' will probably not get a special edition release anytime in the near future.

One of the Ten Best Films Ever!
on April 16, 2008
Posted by: kevman79
This magical fairy tale story has, in many venues, been compared to the 'Wizard of Oz'. And in all honesty, I must agree. An exceptionally poor movie trailer and overall bad marketing, pretty much left this film for dead at the box-office. And its a shame, because it had the potential to be one of the biggest money makers ever in my opinion. Thanks to VHS, the film began its meteoric climb to where it now sits as one of the most beloved family films in the history of cinema. Wonderful acting performances across the board are the highlight of this piece, and everyone in the family is almost sure to enjoy it. Highest recommendation!
