Carlito's Reviews

The Ear Force P21 pushes your PS3 gaming experience to a new level with superior stereo sound and crystal-clear communication on the PlayStation Network (PSN). The P21 gives you a competitive advantage by bringing out sound cues in the game that are difficult to hear with speakers such as the footsteps of an enemy sneaking up on you or the loading of a weapon at a far distance. With its exceptional audio quality, convenient online communication and comfortable ergonomic design, the P21 can help you become a better player while making it a lot more fun to play games on your PS3.

Awesome as Your First Headset

Ok, getting to it, the PX21 headset is awesome… for the money you pay. Now, I’m not saying that in a negative way. It’s just the truth. Retailed at $79.99 it’s a hell of a deal for a headset with the name Turtle Beach on it, with the capabilities of sound AND chat on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 (and PC and Mac as well, but come on, who cares? There are a few ups and downs though, so here it is.
The pros: The headset has features that make chatting and playing a game more engaging. You can control not only the sound and chat volumes independently, but also the bass. That explosion didn’t blow out your ear drum like you had hoped? Turn it up, and enjoy the hearing aid you’ll be using from now on. And that is not over reacting. The volume of this set is intense. If you turn it up ¾ of the way and set the headphones next to you on the couch, you can clearly hear everything as if the TV’s volume was on. It also features Chat Boost which automatically turns the volume up on chatting friends if you’re in a loud gun fight for example. Speaking of chat, unlike the stock headset for 360, when you speak into the mic you can hear yourself loud and clear. So you can not only hear the level at which you’re speaking, that greatly minimizes random screaming in the middle of the night waking up your wife or infant, but it also lets you hear yourself moan and cry when you keep getting shot in the head by campers. More pluses include USB power which means no batteries to recharge or replace, a mute button, and a stereo expander, that when turned on, makes the sound seem wider, surrounding you more instead of just straight up stereo sound.
Speaking of stereo sound, on to the cons: A few things are going to hit you right off the bat. You will feel like the set is cheap. It’s fairly flimsy especially after a couple of months of use when it gets worn in. It still feels like it will hold together nicely, but it just gives you the feeling you’re going to break it when you’re moving it around. Which is good or bad depending on the way you look at it. I’m the type of guy who needs to feel the weight of something. I appreciate that the set is light for the sake of comfort, but sometimes I just don’t know my own strength. The clip for the amplifier box is notorious for breaking off due to poor manufacturing. Also a little gripe I had was at the end of the cord, the cable splits off to the USB connection and the audio jack connection. Well you have roughly 6 or 7 inches of leeway because it cannot be separated anymore than what it already is. Which means whatever you’re connecting it to needs to be pretty close together or else you’re going to need some extra cables to expand the length. Something else that I’m not sure is just me or not, but I had a problem with my cable that connects my amplifier box to the 360 controller. It was not picking up the mic and it was also causing another problem with the volume of the game vs the chat volume. Turtle Beach sent me a total of 3 cables with the final one being totally different with it’s own little control box for volume on it. That worked like a charm and fixed all the problems that weren’t from manufacturing. But honestly, before that cable came I was deeply regretting this set. So that little fix made all the difference in the world.
Bottom line, the Turtle Beach PX21 is an awesome pair of headphones. Especially if this is your first pair, because what you get at this price you can’t go wrong. Just don’t go expecting 5.1 surround sound from these, remember, they are only stereo. I hinted earlier that stereo sound was a con, and it only is if you are used to playing in a 5.1 environment. This headset does pick up a lot of the sounds you wouldn’t usually hear and it goes above and beyond if what you’re looking for is something to let you play at night without waking anybody up. Aside from these few things I really can’t find anything else wrong with it. They’re comfortable even for someone with a big head like me, the mic sounds amazingly clear, you have complete control over all the sounds of the game, and it’s affordable considering the price headsets that are fully functional on both consoles go for. I would go as far as saying this set is something every gamer needs. So unless you’re really crazy about sound and you just need something to help you play at night, these headphones are perfect for you. There’s not much out there in this price range that does the things this set can do.
Verdict: 4/5
What's great about it: Independent controls, compatible for both platforms, clear voice chat, comfortable
What's not so great: Very light and flimsy, length of split at the end of the cord, not surround sound, feels cheap
I would recommend this to a friend!

Platforming Saves It

The Forgotten Sands is one of those games that you hear about, get excited for, and then while you’re playing it you can’t help but wonder what got lost in the translation. I’m not saying it’s a bad game, it’s actually fairly entertaining. But playing through it you can’t help but feel like something’s missing, or something is just not right. And by the time you figure it out, you’re fighting the final boss and then you walk away feeling like you just got taken advantage of. (The taken advantage of where you don’t really fight what’s going on but at the same time you’re not really happy with what’s happening. Just to be clear.)
To get to the point, there are give or take 6 different types of enemies you encounter. Repeatedly. And the various (or not so various) booby traps are the same saws, spikes, spiked pillars, etc. over and over again. The combat gets old fairly quickly because of the lack of a decent system. There are a few combos but when you get put in the middle of a wave of enemies your first reaction is just to swing away hack and slash style.
And added to the combat are 4 elements that you may use against enemies. Earth, which surrounds you in rocks acting as a shield. Wind, which blows all enemies away when the Prince pounds on the ground. And then Fire and Ice, which are very similar and forgettable as bonus powers. You’ll find yourself using Earth and Wind more than the other 2 anyway, and for good reason, since they actually help you in sticky situations. All these powers can be upgraded by an XP system that is fairly basic and nothing to really write home about.
There is a cool ability of being able to freeze water. When you first get the ability you think to yourself “this is fairly interesting and pretty fun.” But like the combat, it gets a bit repetitive, so towards the middle of the game you think, “how many busted pipes does this place have?!” Then finally during the final stages you get smacked in the face with a series of platforming puzzles involving this power that make you take a breath when you’re done saying, “that was awesome!” It’s just too bad they waited till the end to drop those puzzles on you. Not only were they more difficult, but I’ll say they were the most fun I had platforming in the whole game.
Bottom line, if you sit down to play The Forgotten Sands, you won’t be disappointed. Yeah, there are a few gripes I have with it but it’s nothing out of the ordinary for a Prince of Persia game. You don’t go to a restaurant for the bread, you go for the food. Same thing here, you don’t play Prince of Persia for the combat, you play for platforming and puzzle solving. It’s what the series is known for, where it strives, and what is consistently great about The Forgotten Sands. It may have been pushed out there for the sake of coming out shoulder to shoulder with the movie release, (Proof? Why would they just leave the 2008 cell shaded Prince reboot hanging out to dry when it was obviously set up for a sequel?) and the story may not actually fit in the timeline of the trilogy, but that doesn’t stop The Forgotten Sands from being a game worthy of the name Prince of Persia.
Verdict: 3.75 / 5
If you’re a big Prince of Persia fan, buy it. But, for no more than $35 because if you’re good you’ll be done with it in less than 12 hours. And since it’s an easy Platinum Trophy (one playthrough) if you plan it right, there won’t be much to come back to once you’re done.
What's great about it: The platforming. Its fun and it brings you back to the original Sands of Time trilogy.
What's not so great: The story is meh, graphics are sub par for todays standards, combat and upgrades are basic, and its a fairly short game.

An awesome game!!!... at first!

I will not lie, I have been waiting for this game for a long time. When it was first talked about, they explained the idea and what they were aiming for and I was hooked, hoping they could pull it off and of coarse, they did. And i'm so glad they did because I was tired of being dissappointed by over hyped games that flopped. But I assure you, this is not the case when you turn it on.
With the look and feel like it should be a title aimed at an audience with a 7:00 p.m bedtime you'll get thrown off, I know. But the level of design, creativity, and sheer simpleness is what make this game stand out so much. Sure, the controls can be tighter but your not controlling Mario here. This is an environment where there are 3 different levels of depth at a time.
The story itself is not as gripping as titles that focus on character developement and storytelling. But at the same time as the level of difficulty throughout the game rises you'll become more and more interested in the level design and thought that went into making something so simple, so beautiful.
Then comes the online community it focus' on. When the story is over the levels become rather old and boring when you played them 20 times. So you turn to the online aspect and so far it is not very promising. It may be because it's a new game and they're working out the bugs but the servers being down more often than not it proves rather difficult. And when they are up you'll be lucky to find someone playing that isn't on your friends list and 7 times out of 10 there is so much lag in the game you have to quit because it is unplayable.
So go ahead and get it because it is worth it for the time you do enjoy it and hopefully they will fix all the online issues and make it what it's suppose to be, the A list game the PS3 has been waiting for. It's too late for me though by the time you read this I probably have traded mine in already for Call of Duty World at War.
What's great about it: Originality, simple, easy to learn, addicting, FUN, online community
What's not so great: Gets old when the storyline is over, challenging becomes frustrating, online community

Skip on the "3-D"

My fiance and I both loved this movie when it was released and we still do. When we heard it was coming out on Blu Ray and on top of that 3-D we were beyond excited. Well that excitment was crushed when we got home, put it on and were almost given instant headaches from the old school red and blue 3-d glasses and the fact that no matter how hard we tried to see it, it just was nowhere near 3-d quality. We sat there contemplating whether or not it was just us or if the 3-d aspect of it sucked that bad and we came to the conclusion that it was definately the latter. So after a half hour of trying hard to like it we switched it to 2-d (thank god for blu ray for having that option) and saw how in 1080p it was almost 3-d itself.
Needless to say the very next day I went back to the store I purchased it from and changed it for the regular blu ray version (which was $5 cheaper than the 3-d version and totally worth the purchase, 5 stars for that version.) It was very sad that it did not work out because such an amazing holiday movie with such great animation would be a no brainer to have as 3-d but unfortunately it just is not worth the headache and strain.
So save your $5 and go ahead and get the regular Blu Ray version of the movie. Truuuuuuuuuuust me and thank me later, or don't trust me and let me know so I could say I told you so.
What's great about it: The story, characters, animation, everything but the 3-d
What's not so great: THE 3-D!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Backwards compatibility?

Is the new 80GB PS3 backwards compatible with PS2 and PS1 games or was that functionality removed?
To my knowledge, the two versions of the PS3 that are available right now (the 80gb and if you can find it still, the Metal Gear Solid bundle,) both versions can play PS1 games but the MGS bundle version can play PS2 games when regular 80 gb version cannot. Now, I'm pretty sure that is how it works with the backwards compatibility. If it's not... my bad.
