Don Fedderson's hit series Family Affair, which ran for five years on CBS, has arrived on DVD from MPI in a handsome five-disc set covering the program's complete first season. The 30 episodes all look to be in fine shape, their color intact and bright and filled with rich detail, right down to the texture of the clothes worn by the actors, and a healthy volume level on the audio. Each disc opens automatically to a main menu recreating the kaleidoscope design of the show's opening credits, and offering an easy-to-use selection of commands, with the "play all" option in the default position. Disc five contains the set's one bonus feature, a delightful 20-minute featurette on the development of the series and its history, hosted by co-star Kathy Garver, who relates stories about the way the roles were cast (she got her part as the teenaged daughter when the actress originally chosen gained ten pounds while vacationing for the summer), and the way they worked and related to each other. It turns out that Brian Keith's and Sebastian Cabot's real-life demeanors and approaches to acting were reflected in their roles; Keith was the freewheeling man's man with a devil-may-care attitude, while Cabot was the meticulous preparer. One has to admire the care that has been taken with this set and the transfers (full-screen, 1.33:1), and the overall production. The programs look great and the documentary is fun as far as it goes. Curiously, we hear a bit more about the background of Johnny Whitaker than any of the other cast members, including Garver herself (whose movie career went back to The Ten Commandments a decade before the series). One can hope, though, that this material is being saved up for a supplement on one of the volumes devoted to another season of the show.

The Waltons is regarded as one of the most family-friendly shows in the history of television. Each episode from that series' first season is presented on this box set in its original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. French subtitles are accessible. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, but fans of the series will not be dissatisfied by this straightforward presentation.

Our family love these shows. They are totally awesome. The huge family of the waltons living during the depression days of our country & the struggles they represent, but yet show how the importance of caring for each other and family is what matters. These are some of the most wonderful shows you can share with your family!!
What's great about it: Family working together & loving each other

Based on the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, the Emmy-winning series Little House on the Prairie comes to DVD from NBC Home Video. This six-disc Collector's Edition box set contains all 23 episodes of the complete first season, originally aired from 1974 to 1975. The fully restored image is presented with a standard full-frame transfer and Dolby Digital Stereo Sound in English. On disc one, the Ingalls set up their farm in Walnut Grove, MN, in the episodes "A Harvest of Friends," "Country Girls," "100 Mile Walk," and "Mr. Edwards' Homecoming." Disc two contains "The Love of Johnny Johnson," "If I Should Die Before I Wake," "Town Party, Country Party," and "Ma's Holiday." Disc three contains "School Mom," "The Raccoon," "The Voice of Tinker Jones," and "The Award." Disc four contains "The Lord Is My Shepherd," "Christmas at Plum Creek," and "Family Quarrel." Disc five contains "Doctor's Lady," "Plague," "Circus Man," and "Child of Pain." Disc six contains "Money Crop," "Survival," "To See the World," and "Founder's Day." Special features include character profiles, photo gallery, and episode quiz. The DVD packaging contains several full-color photos of the Ingalls family. Overall, this is an excellent collection for fans of the show.
