Best to be sure that the kids are fast asleep before this Santa pays your family a visit! What better way to celebrate Christmas in June than with Dimension Home Video's release of director Terry Zwigoff's hilariously raunchy holiday comedy Bad Santa? Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image offers solid, bright colors, even skin tones, and minor edge enhancement. Though the English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio isn't overloaded with directional effects, it makes effective, infrequent use of the rear channels from time to time and remains clear of hiss or distortion throughout. If viewers are at first disappointed by the apparent lack of such in-depth extra features as director's commentary, there are some colorful, albeit minor, extras on this disc that will no doubt soften the blow a bit. A brief, "Behind-the-Scenes Special" follows the film from inception to final cut through interviews with the cast and crew, and a handful of deleted and alternate scenes manage to entertain despite the fact that their exclusion from the feature was entirely justified. That said, the true gems of this particular release are the outtakes and the "Badder Santa Gag Reel." Though the outtakes segment does recycle some of the footage from the aforementionsed deleted and alternate scenes, the infectious energy and good humor of the talented cast and crew makes for a few solid chuckles, and this giddiness certainly carries over into the "Badder Santa Gag Reel" -- which offers a quick montage of off-the-cuff goofiness.

Gus Van Sant's Oscar-winning psychological drama Good Will Hunting gets the deluxe treatment from Disney/Buena Vista. The disc offers a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. There are no subtitles on this release. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by the director as well as Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, 11 deleted scenes, a making-of featurette, television promotional spots, a montage of images from Oscar night (the film captured Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor), and a music video. This is the definitive home video release of this well-regarded film.

The strange tonal shifts in James L. Brooks' Spanglish are addressed obliquely by the director in his commentary track for the DVD release of the film. The fascinating aspect of the commentary is that Brooks does not seem to think there is anything wrong with the film even while he tells stories about how audiences reacted to the movies in ways he found unusual. Brooks also addresses the rumors about the problems between his lead actress and himself. The commentary offers a look at a director who is still a little too close to his film. The film itself is presented in a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. Additional supplemental materials include a featurette on the greatest sandwich ever (includes a recipe), footage from the casting sessions, and deleted scenes.
