Black Death Is Right
on December 29, 2011

Black Death is a very proper title for this film. Few films can equal the dark world this film takes place in, and unlike horror films which feature killers such as Freddie Kruger or alien monstrosities, the true horror of this film is that it is rooted in fact rather than fiction.
I never watch thrillers or horror films, but if I do, it is to remind me of why I do not watch them. After viewing the trailer for this film, I was torn. On one hand, it could be a cold blooded thriller, but on the other, it could be a good, dark film. It turns out to be the latter. While it is very gruesome, it points out that the most horrible atrocities are not seen on the silver screen committed by fictional characters or monsters, but rather found in history committed by very real people. If we truly want to scare ourselves, we need not delve into an imaginary world, but rather the world around us.
As alluded to by its title, the film takes place in Fourteenth-century England during the Black Plague. The Black Plague killed roughly half of the people in Europe at the time. No human can say that this is not a horrific event, but I believe the acts of the people at the time to be even more horrific. This is the dark Middle Age we all know, but may not realize how truly dark it was. Women were commonly accused of being witches and burned at the stake, and those who opposed the church were tortured and killed. This is the plot of the film. A group of soldiers are sent by the church to investigate a small town for two reasons, to discover why they do not suffer from the Black Plague, and also to search out any heretics of the church and bring them back for torture. The Middle Age was a horrific time period to live in with just the Plague alone, but with the ignorant “educated” people, it became an unimaginable nightmarish world by today's standards. The film displays the ignorance of humanity by showing that both factions in the film are so blinded by their stubbornness that neither side can live in peace.
This is only the primary theme of the film as I see it, and there are others hidden within it. If you have the stomach for it, you must see this film.
What's great about it: Isn't afraid to show is how it was.
What's not so great: Probably too dark and gruesome for some.

Amazing super hero film.

Iron Man is the greatest super hero movie of all time. Why? It doesn’t feel like a super hero movie. It feels like a movie where what takes place is actually possible. It makes you believe in Iron Man.
Tony Stark, let’s face it, is not the greatest role model for your kids. He took on his father’s legacy of designing weapons for the American military at a young age when his father died. The more death and pain in the world, the more he profits, until the day when his own weapons open his eyes to the true result of his life’s work. After a typical weapons demonstration, the convoy is attacked and Tony taken captive. He escapes by designing the Mark I Iron Man suit, but not without a constant reminder of those days implanted in his chest. This is a life changing experience for him, as he will now take on the identity of Iron Man who is determined to reverse the damage he has done the world.
I don’t think you will be disappointed with this.
What's great about it: The action, the plot, the hero in armor, everything...
What's not so great: it ends eventually.

Iron Man 2 isn't quite what I wanted, but it is far better than anticipated. The first Iron Man was unique and cannot be touched in its quality for a long time. This one is a worthy sequel however.
Tony Stark has gone back to his former self in the sense of pride and arrogance, but has not stooped back down in his morals, excluding his addiction to alcohol. He is the most popular man on earth and has everything he could ever want, except for time. Ironically his chest piece that is keeping him alive is also killing him giving him the mentality of living life to the fullest. Whiplash comes into the picture and puts doubt into the world’s mind of whether or not Iron Man is capable of keeping his promises of world peace and the Iron Man tech. This only adds more instability to Tony’s life and begins his fall from fame.
This new Iron Man story is a great installment to what will become a great super hero series. Must see for this summer. Period.
What's great about it: Iron man=awesome action
What's not so great: Wish he got over his character flaws fully in the first film.

Wish it was good... But severely disappointed...

This movie was a monstrous disappointment for me. The first trailer I saw I said, I want to see that movie.
I sat down in the theater anticipating what great colorful experience I was about to behold. I admit, for the first few minutes, I was happy as could be, but then the movie started. It starts out pretty decent from what I remember but somewhere in there it begins to take a nose dive, crashes and burns, then crashes again. The story to the film is just there as a side attraction to the monstrosity consuming the screen. The short films spawned off of this film aren’t half bad though, I can recommend those. I believe the difficult part for those behind this movie was developing a plot to use the time allotted for a movie.
While it was not the worst film I have seen, and I have met those who enjoy the film, I seriously suggest alternative solutions to burning time.
What's great about it: Not much.
What's not so great: The humor... the plot... the movie...

Signs is a great sci-fi and suspense classic. When I first watched this film, I honestly did not expect the ending I got. Definitely not in a bad way though.
Signs is the story of a father (Mel Gibson) who is trying to raise his family without his wife. After her death, his brother moved in to help out on the farm and with raising the kids. Life changes for him one morning when he wakes to the sounds of his daughters screams. Him and his brother run outside to discover giant crop circles in their corn. Was it the work of nearby teenage boys, or something more?
Signs will make you laugh, cry, and realize what it is all about when it all comes together in the end.
What's great about it: Quite an emotional roller coaster.

Wow. All I can say about Toy Story 3. I don’t understand it, but it is the best of the trilogy, and may also be the saddest at end because it’s all over. The way this one was created seems like it’s a farewell for every fan of the series. In no way is it that typical horrible sequel to a bad sequel of a good original movie. Pixar has kept the magic of these toys alive for many years proved by this film.
Toy Story 3, maybe indirectly, teaches loyalty, love, and trust. The toys believe they are intentionally thrown away by Andy and immediately turn their backs on him for something they believe to be toy heaven. Quickly this belief spirals out of control and the ugly truth shows itself.
The movie shows two sides of how toys react to ‘rejection’. One side at first reacts irrationally and believes all those years of ‘playtime’ were nothing but a waste of time, until they realize what really happened and choose to attempt to make it right. The other takes this unintentional rejection without having any form of trust or understanding and results in a permanent scarring of the mind. I may have read a little deep into it, but I think it’s something to consider after watching the film.
Toy Story 3 is only beat by one animated film, the film being Up; it is most certainly not an insult.
What's great about it: Takes me back to my childhood.
What's not so great: The series appears to be over.... but such a great ending.

I want a hero that will hold my flashlight during the dark night. You know, I really wanted to like this movie. I know a lot of people do by the reviews and the way my friends talk about it, I just don’t know what I missed.
This movie is actually pretty great. It is just not that great of a movie. Let me explain this to you. The movie has a great story and is creative, just would have fitted into a comic book better. It is rather stressful to sit down and watch the whole thing through. I don’t know, it’s just too dark for a relaxing watch, definitely good for a serious viewing though. Now, you might be thinking that I am the type that does not like gritty, dark films, but I have watched and enjoyed films such as: Flags of Our Fathers, Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, etc. Also, people come to love the most horrible character I have ever seen depicted in a movie of any type, the Joker. Now, I just don’t find it too humorous when you make a joke of a pencil going through some dude’s head, killing your hired hands, and blowing up hospitals. There is more, but I do not wish to spoil your afternoon with spoilers. (There is a reason they are called that.) What I meant earlier by the first sentence in this review, is that Batman seems to have lost his edge to kill or at least seriously threaten the head honchos. In the first installment of the series, he leaves his mentor on the track to his doom. In this film, he is reluctant to hurt that pretty face of the Joker’s we have all seen.
Watch the film and prove me wrong, you will most likely enjoy it for at least the first time.
What's great about it: Amazing acting, Batman
What's not so great: Need a therapist to digest the film.

Classic Sci-Fi Film by Classic Sci-Fi Director

Stop hitting on this movie people! I know it is not the best, but when you see movies with absolutely no story and thought, you don’t shoot them up. Despite the criticism surrounding this movie, I believe it to be above average and while it might not be a must see, science fiction fanatics will love it and the movie lover will appreciate it.
This movie starts off a bit slow to some but it seems to be necessary to get connected a little better to a few of the characters because of the fact that in the latter half of the movie they are normally in their avatar bodies. Some might say that this film is a space edition of Dances With Wolves, while they are similar, you have to take into account other themes in the film, and that this was originally to be done about fifteen years ago before Dances With Wolves. This film cannot be accused of not being colorful and creative visually. The new 3D technology adds to the experience and almost makes it worth watching on its own. Speaking of colors, the story is very green, almost fanatical at points, but it seems that is the only way of making points in this modern era where no one actually thinks but instead searches the web for the answer. Other topics discussed behind the curtain would be things like respect of human lives, racism maybe, Native Americans, and religion, but I am sure there are others I have forgotten.
I might sound too critical of the film for liking it so, but I liked it and recommend it to anyone who believes they can take it as is and not want something out of it that it is not. I had to give it lower stars on the plot because it had elements that could seem like they were stolen from other movies, and a bit lower on acting because it wasn't the actual faces of the actors, and poor on extras because this edition of the movie does not have extras.
What's great about it: Good effects, Good action, Good story, Good overall
What's not so great: No extras.

Pixar serves yet another classic up
on December 21, 2009

Another classic has been added to the Pixar list. This time the story follows a rat who feels differently about being a rat than his family. He and his father have two opposing views on what they are eating and the humans. One day while searching for ingredients in the kitchen, where his father told him not to be specifically, he was caught. This leads to the discovery of the colony, where all the rats live. They are forced out and separated from one another. Now that the rat is alone, he feels he might have a chance to live a life that his father warned him against: a chef. Granted it would be difficult for a rat to be a chef for humans without a little help, and so he befriends a human who has no cooking talent to become a great team.
This movie is a wonderful story. You might say that a rat controlling a person by tugging on his hair might just be a touch unreal, but it being an animated film opens up a few more possibilities. There is a thought behind the story, and is taught throughout the film several times. This thought is the fact that anyone can do anything. If they had done the film about a person who eventually becomes a successful chef, it would not have had the same impact on the audience. But, by using a rat, (let’s face it, a rat isn’t high on the food chain or thought of well by people) it conveys a little better.
What's great about it: Great film all around
What's not so great: Very little

Best Off-Road Racer Currently

DiRT 2 is a great racing game. Like all racing games, it can be frustrating being played on a higher difficulty, but if you choose the difficulty level for you, it can be highly addictive. The graphics in the game are great. It gets a three for difficulty because it has several difficulty levels. I love driving through muddy areas with puddles and having the water wash up onto the windshield, temporarily blinding you until the wind shield wipers activate. The mud builds up on the side of the cars throughout the course of the race, making the game’s title appropriate. The damage models of the cars are unlike I have seen in a while. What makes this one great is the modern visual graphics combined with the damage models giving you an unparallel experience. Another great thing is the computer AI, they seem better than racing games of the past. It is also possible to drive them off the road in your frustrated moments. Sometimes, that is not even required because of the fact that the AI makes mistakes on its own.
One bad thing though is the fact that the cars aren’t very customizable. Yeah, you can add some little things, such as: an air freshener hanging off the rear-view-mirror, a small assortment of dashboard items, and change the horn; but it feels wrong not having the ability to make custom paint jobs, change tire rims, change the spoiler, and so on. When you first put the disc in and start it up, it begins a half-hour sequence of watching required animations/tutorials and the game guide telling you what every menu screen is for. After that though, it is all racing action.
DiRT 2 is a must-have for those who are die hard racing game fans.
What's great about it: Visual Graphics
What's not so great: Customization Options

does the ps3 play ps2 games

Modern PS3s are compatible with PS1 games, but PS2 on the other hand, are not. The early PS3s were, but that was a feature dropped out for whatever reason. I do not know about the Slims though. I assume they are like the others, compatible with PS1, but not PS2.
