Great Show, But Horrible DVD Release
on January 28, 2010

Farscape is one of the best science fiction shows ever produced. However, this review is based on the A&E release of the DVD set.
There was a lot of expectations that A&E would have released a high quality set but A&E must have dropped the ball because this complete series set sorely lacks any quality.
The packaging literally sucks. What was A&E thinking with the shoddy packaging for the complete series set? You would think that they would have put a little more thought into the design for the DVD box. The DVD box is thin and flimsy like paper.
Then, there's the matter of the actual DVD sets that are simply standard DVD cases with interior "flipper" DVD pages. A&E simply crammed as many episodes as they could onto each DVD.
Secondly, the quality of these DVD's simply suck. I wouldn't recommend this set. The DVD's that ADV Films released a few years back were of better quality.
What's great about it: Great TV Series
What's not so great: A&E Dropped the Ball
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Family Life, Anime-style
on August 9, 2009

Japanese Anime often gets a bad rep among those who don't really understand it but if you're looking for something that's really entertaining to watch, I would highly recommend this particular film.
In the past, we have had such animated shows as The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy and American Dad which often takes a sarcastic look at family life and turns it on its ear. However, if you're looking for something that's non-offensive and protrays an accurate depiction of family life, Studio Ghibli's My Neighbors, The Yamadas is a wonderful introduction.
Studio Ghibli's release of "My Neighbors, The Yamadas depicts the various scenarios that happen in one particular family and is told in humorous 'comedy skits' that average about three minutes each. Throughout the entire 140 minute film, the viewer is shown an aspect of the life of "The Yamadas" which depict accurate family struggles through child-raising, work-life and what comes naturally to a normal family. While the film is animated in a strange style of art sketches, which are animated.
With a cast featuring the likes of David Ogden Stiers (M*A*S*H), James Belushi (Blues Brothers), Dixie Carter (Designing Women), Molly Shannon (Saturday Night Live), Walt Disney went all out for the cast for this animated film.
Studio Ghibli has shown a knack for producing quality animated films and is known as the Japanese version of Disney. With a production of films aimed more at the family, they have produced nothing but quality films.
The whole film, in its entirety, is quite enjoyable and hilarious and the final closing sketch features the cast forming Doris Day's Que Sera Sera and is a cause for real hilarity.
If you're looking for something different, to share with the whole family, I would highly recommend this film. It surely designed to become a classic.
What's great about it: Studio Ghibli, Nothing Further Needed
What's not so great: Not a Single Bad Thing

"We ... Are ... Coming!"
on July 7, 2009

Just finished watching the first broadcast episode of Torchwood and I have to say that if you have never seen any BBC before that this particular series, "Children of Earth" is definitely the one to get.
Torchwood: Children of Earth starts the Third Season of the Series and the premise is that aliens are returning to Earth after their last contact with the planet, over 40 years ago. As the British government attempts to understand why the children have suddenly stopped, all over the world, all at once, they start chanting in unison, "We Are Coming."
The British government decides it needs to stop this from happening as they don't know what the aliens plan is for Earth and government officials start hunting down Torchwood one-by-one.
While British television is sometimes hard to understand or to follow, this is one series that deserves a special look. It has the quality of a large big budget movie with all of the action of Indiana Jones, National Treasure and Star Wars all rolled into one. If you appreciate a solid story, good acting and high-octane action and adventure then I highly recommend this series.
What's great about it: Torchwood

More Than Meets the Eye
on June 16, 2009

For an older generation of fans, Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye, the original series, is the best incarnation and original version of the series. Combining humor with quality animation, every series that has come after it from the Energon series to Cybertron to Armada, none of these shows have lived up to the originality of the original.
It just goes to prove that not even the Japanese anime studios could produce a new series on par with the original.
The only standout in the original series, Peter Cullen, who also voices Optimus Prime in the Live Action movies, was the original voice actor for the animated series and he's what fans equate with the Transformers series. Even such greats as Scatman Caruthers as Jazz, the Autobot ... you just can't improve on that.
With such classic Autobots as Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Jazz, Prowl, Ratchet, Ironhide, the Dinobots and even Jetfire, you can't go wrong with a series that is as non-violent as this one.
I plan on picking this one up when Best Buy opens. And better yet, Season 2 Part 1 is due out in September.
What's great about it: The Original Autobots and Decepticons

Jack Bauer Returns; Tony Almeida Goes Rogue
on May 17, 2009

This season is, by far, the best season of the entire series. With Tony Almeida as the good guy gone bad, he keeps you guessing as to what his real motives are as he leads Jack down so many different paths that it's impossible to guess what he's going to do.
Kiefer Sutherland, although he has appeared in a lot of movies, shines best in this series as Jack Bauer, and it makes you wonder how Fox is going to bring this series to a close when Season 8 ends the series.
As the producers have said, this season has delivered on more than one occassion and never fails to let the viewer down. If there is one DVD set you must buy this year, this one is it.
What's great about it: Tony Almedia as the Terrorist
What's not so great: Jack Bauer is Dying

Go, Go, Go. Speed Racer Go.
on October 3, 2008

Speed Racer was my first introduction to the world of Japanese Anime and while this series doesn't scream anime, it's considered one of the best classic anime shows among fans.
-----------------------------------------------------
I grew up watching this series back in the early seventies and while the series may seem cheesy and not up to par with today's anime or cartoon shows you don't see a lot of the violence that many of todays shows convey.
-----------------------------------------------------
For those of you who passed on this series when Lionsgate was releasing them one disk at a time or for those of you who are debating picking up this set ... I highly recommend this DVD set to anyone who still enjoys family entertainment.
-----------------------------------------------------
For parents? This series is safer for your children to watch than Dragonball Z or Power Rangers and teaches children the meaning of responsibility, morals and ethics.
What's great about it: Family Entertainment & Value

Hilarious Western Romp
on December 18, 2007
Posted by: kenichi
from Flint, Michigan
For those who aren't into the classic typical western movie genre, A Big Hand for the Little Lady isn't your typical western movie. While this movie does have an underlying western theme it centers around a con job orchestrated by a banker, a con-man and con-woman, a boy and a few others in an effort to get back at some residents who live in the town where this poker game takes place.
While the poker game isn't important, the whole con is elaborately set up by the "grieving widow" as she attempts to finagle her way into the game. What follows soon-after is a very elaborate and hilarious verbal interaction between the main players in this comedic tale of revenge as the previously mentioned attempt to take the unsuspecting poker players and clean them dry.
This movie really deserves to be seen, even if you're not a fan of old westerns. At least Warner Brothers was kind enough to finally release this classic movie to DVD.
What's great about it: Best Performances Ever
What's not so great: Non, What-So-Ever

Anime Sci-Fi Epic Finally on DVD

For those of you unfamiliar with this series, it had been previously released on VHS back in 2001. The series, while somewhat comedic at times, was a pretty good series to pick up on.
If you're looking for a new series to pick up on, this collection contains 26 episodes and is a good find.
